Modeling the Stability of SARS-CoV-2 on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Thermal comfort of personal protective equipment (PPE) wearers in different temperatures and activity conditions

Summary: This study observed the thermal physiological and psychosocial responses of healthcare workers wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at different temperatures and activity intensities. The increase in ambient temperature had a greater impact on average skin temperature, while activity intensity had a greater impact on heart rate and tympanic temperature. Healthcare workers wearing PPE experienced discomfort due to high temperature and humidity, with mask wearing and high humidity being the most frequently reported occurrences. Forehead, chest, and back were suggested as primary areas to consider for designing improvement measures for thermal comfort of PPE wearers.

A retrospective observational insight into COVID-19 exposures resulting from personal protective equipment (PPE) breaches

Summary: This study assessed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) breaches and exposures among healthcare workers (HCWs) in COVID-19 wards and found that breaches commonly occurred among nursing officers. The results showed that high-risk exposures had a higher COVID-19 positivity rate compared to low-risk exposures. Non-mask related breaches accounted for the majority of positive COVID-19 cases. These findings highlight the importance of appropriate PPE use and the need for early identification and management of HCWs at high risk of exposure.

Summary: One of the main concerns of intraoperative hypotension is the adequacy of cerebral perfusion. Treatment options for intraoperative hypotension include the use of different drugs, such as inotropes and vasopressors, but there is no consensus on the preferred drug. A network meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effect of various inotropes/vasopressors on cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) in patients undergoing surgery under anesthesia. Results showed that dopamine, ephedrine, and norepinephrine had the lowest probability of decreasing ScO2.

Continuous interscalene versus phrenic nerve-sparing high-thoracic erector spinae plane block for total shoulder arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

There were no significant differences in pain scores and opioid consumption between the two groups.

Characterization of Epidural Analgesia Interruption and Associated Outcomes After Esophagectomy

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and causes of interruption of thoracic epidural analgesia in esophagectomy patients and its association with postoperative outcomes. Results showed that 35.7% of patients experienced epidural interruption, with hypotension being the most common cause. Patients with epidural interruption had a higher risk of complications such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation, delirium, sepsis, and severe anastomotic leak. Female gender was associated with epidural interruption. Rating: 8/10
