Summary: Individuals with tic disorders, especially those with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), have a higher risk for transport injuries or death compared to the general population. Improved detection and management of ADHD symptoms in this patient group are warranted to reduce the risk of serious transport accidents.

Summary: Children have a 50% increased odds of having a new mental health diagnosis in the year following a firearm injury as compared to a motor vehicle collision. Substance-related and addictive disorders, as well as trauma and stressor-related disorders, contribute to the increased odds of mental health diagnoses.

Summary: This study compared hospital costs and resource utilization between children with motor vehicle and firearm injuries. Findings showed that children with firearm injuries had higher hospitalization rates, intensive care unit admissions, longer lengths of stay, higher costs, more imaging, and more return visits compared to those with motor vehicle injuries. Therefore, there is a need for stronger prevention efforts for firearm-related injuries.

Summary: Successful public health policies have reduced pediatric automobile fatalities, but firearm injuries have surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of childhood death in Colorado. This study examines the national trends and the impact of state gun laws on firearm injury fatality rates.

Summary: This study found that obesity may increase the risk of extremity injuries in pediatric population involved in motor vehicle accidents, and could lead to thoracic and head/neck injuries. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the impact of obesity on head injuries, requiring further research for confirmation.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine age and sex-specific differences in pedestrian and cyclist accidents involving passenger cars at a single Level 1 Trauma Center in a major US metropolitan area. The study found that female pedestrians and cyclists are more likely to be injured in road accidents, especially with pelvis fractures, regardless of age. Age was also identified as a predictor of injury severity. Additionally, race-based differences were observed, with Black patients being injured more frequently.

Summary: Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in people aged 5 to 29, with pedestrians and cyclists being disproportionately affected. This study examined age and sex-specific differences in pedestrian and cyclist accidents involving passenger cars at a level 1 trauma center in a major US metropolitan area. The findings showed that female pedestrians and cyclists are at a higher risk of obtaining pelvis fractures in traumatic road accidents compared to males, and age is a predictor of injury severity. Race-based differences were also observed, with Black patients being injured more frequently. Further research is needed to understand demographics at risk for traumatic road accidents and evaluate city infrastructure.

Summary: An increasing number of U.S. states are legalizing regulated commercial markets for recreational cannabis, but the health impacts are not fully understood. Preliminary evidence suggests that these markets may lead to increased use among adults and have potential downstream health impacts. This study analyzed data from seven states and found that recreational markets were associated with increased motor vehicle accident deaths but had no impact on suicides. However, there was a reduction in opioid overdose fatalities on average.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed medico-legal documents and reports of 300 claimants and examined the impact of biopsychosocial factors on post-MVA sequelae. The results indicated that biomedical factors such as age, sleep disturbance, and central sensitisation, as well as psychological factors including stress, anxiety, and depression, were the significant predictors of non-recovery for claimants with chronic pain post-MVA.

Summary: This study estimated the impact of road traffic injuries on healthcare costs in Saudi Arabia using data from the hospital's trauma registry for 2017. The findings showed that factors such as severity of injury and length of hospital stay were significantly associated with hospitalization costs. Public health interventions are necessary to reduce the economic burden of road traffic injuries and improve traffic safety.

Summary: The study assessed the trends in motor vehicle traffic (MVT) mortality in New York City from 1999 to 2020. Overall, MVT death rates decreased by 3% per year during this period, but there was an increase in mortality rates among females and in Kings County. Further investigation is needed to understand the factors contributing to this increase and targeted interventions are necessary to prevent MVT deaths and ensure community health and safety.
