Summary: In this study, the performance of microbial electrosynthesis (MES) was improved by modifying the cathode with ZIF-8 particles of different pore sizes. The ZIF-8 modified electrode achieved a higher acetate production rate and concentration compared to the bare cathode. The high CO2 adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 and its beneficial effects on biofilm formation and bacteria enrichment contributed to the improved performance of MES.

Summary: This work reports the construction of zinc-based zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) microrings through an anisotropic growth-etching route. The method involves the deposition of ZIF-8 crystals on the edges of leaf-like ZIF-L nanosheets with coordinatively unsaturated Zn2+ and subsequent selective etching of alkaline unstable ZIF-L. Additionally, functional carbon materials with a ring-like structure can be prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8 microrings, exhibiting improved performance in oxygen reduction reaction. These findings may pave the way for the design of MOFs with sophisticated micro/nanostructures.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental impacts of different synthesis methods for ZIF-8 through life cycle assessment (LCA), with a focus on the contribution of solvents. The findings showed that replacing the solvent DMF with methanol could significantly reduce the impact on human health, ecosystem, and resources. The mechanochemical method had the least environmental impact due to its simplicity and fewer production steps.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate CO2 adsorption on the highly porous ZIF-8. Characterization of ZIF-8 was done through techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, TGA analysis, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. Adsorption isotherms were obtained at different temperatures (273 K, 298 K, 323 K, and 353 K). A new model based on multilayer with saturation was simulated and interpreted. Physicochemical parameters describing the CO2 adsorption process and thermodynamic functions governing the adsorption process were determined. The results showed that CO2 adsorption on ZIF-8 was spontaneous and exothermic.

Summary: Dihydromyricetin (DHM) holds potential as an antitumor agent, but its low bioavailability limits its clinical application. In this study, DHM@ZIF-8 nanoparticles were developed using ZIF-8 as a carrier to enhance its antitumor activity. The nanoparticles exhibited a regular morphology with a suitable particle size and a high drug release rate in a simulated tumor micro acid environment. Compared to the prodrug, DHM@ZIF-8 showed increased killing effect on HepG2 cells, along with enhanced removal of ROS, promotion of apoptosis, and significant modulation of apoptosis-related proteins within tumor cells.

Summary: An all-aqueous microfluidic reactor was used to synthesize protein-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles in a one-step, rapid, and highly controlled manner at room temperature. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles with protein encapsulation efficiency over 97% were achieved by pre-mixing proteins with 2-MIM. The 25 nm ZIF-8 nanoparticles showed the best performance in promoting cellular uptake of protein payload and enhancing cytosolic protein delivery.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles to be incorporated within a renal scaffold while still retaining their ability to remove hydrophobic uremic toxins like p-cresol under flow conditions. This could lead to the development of novel adsorbents for dialysis and/or artificial kidneys in the future.

Summary: In this study, PAN-based activated nanofiber composites embedded inside ZIF-8 crystals or ZDC-850 were fabricated as CO2 adsorbents. The material properties were affected by the timing of ligand decomposition in ZIF-8 and the degree of crystallinity of ZDC-850 changed compared to ZIF-8. The ZIF-8/PAN exhibited the highest CO2 adsorption capacity.

Summary: Multilayer intelligent freshness labels based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and anthocyanins doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (A-ZIF-8) nanocrystals were developed. The films showed tunable ammonia sensing, mechanical, and barrier properties by adjusting the number of PVA/A-ZIF-8 layers. The BNC2PVA/A-ZIF-8 films exhibited good colorimetric sensitivity in monitoring the freshness of skinless chicken breasts.
