Summary: Primary malignant spinal astrocytomas are rare entities with limited median survival and rapid neurological deterioration. Surgical approach should focus on obtaining histological tissue via a biopsy or tumor debulking in cases with rapidly progressive severe preoperative deficits.

Endovascular reconstruction of iatrogenic internal carotid artery injury following endonasal surgery: a systematic review

Mohammad Ghorbani, Christoph J. Griessenauer, Hamidreza Shojaei, Christoph Wipplinger, Ebrahim Hejazian

Summary: This study provided an update on endovascular treatments for iatrogenic internal carotid artery injuries following endonasal surgery, indicating that flow diverting devices and covered stents are good therapeutic options for endoluminal reconstruction. The systematic review included 26 articles with 46 patients, showing promising clinical outcomes with both flow diversion and covered stents.

Novel MIS 3D NAV Single Step Pedicle Screw System (SSPSS): Workflow, Accuracy and Initial Clinical Experience

Franziska A. Schmidt, Herve M. Lekuya, Sertac Kirnaz, Robert Nick Hernandez, Ibrahim Hussain, Louis Chang, Rodrigo Navarro-Ramirez, Christoph Wipplinger, Cameron Rawanduzy, Roger Hartl

Summary: In this prospective case series study, a novel single step 3D navigated pedicle screw system was used for minimally invasive spine surgery. The study showed that the SSPSS could be a safe, accurate, and efficient tool, with an accuracy rate of 90% in terms of avoiding pedicle wall penetration. No revision surgeries were needed and no complications occurred, indicating the potential effectiveness of this technique.

Serum concentration-guided intravenous magnesium sulfate administration for neuroprotection in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a retrospective evaluation of a 12-year single-center experience

C. Wipplinger, A. Cattaneo, T. M. Wipplinger, K. Lamllari, F. Semmler, C. Geske, J. Messinger, V. Nickl, A. Beez, R. -I. Ernestus, M. Pham, T. Westermaier, J. Weiland, C. Stetter, E. Kunze

Summary: This study reveals the value of serum concentration-guided magnesium administration in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The results show that maintaining a serum magnesium concentration of 2-2.5 mmol/l can reduce the incidence of delayed cerebral infarction and improve clinical outcomes.

Adenosine-induced transient circulatory arrest in transvenous embolization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations

Mohammad Ghorbani, Christoph J. Griessenauer, Christoph Wipplinger, Pascal Jabbour, Mahdi Kadkhodazadeh Asl, Farhad Rahbarian, Abolghasem Mortazavi

Summary: The transvenous approach offers an effective treatment option for brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) but is not suitable for all patients. Careful patient selection is crucial to ensure safety and favorable clinical outcomes. Temporary flow arrest may be beneficial for treating high-flow AVMs.

Gender-Specific Differences in Presentation and Management of Spinal Infection: A Single-Center Retrospective Study of 159 Cases

Sara Lener, Christoph Wipplinger, Sebastian Hartmann, Andreas Rietzler, Claudius Thome, Anja Tschugg

Summary: Male patients have a higher incidence of spinal infection (SI), but female patients may be more severely affected, experiencing more intraoperative complications and receiving more frequent blood transfusions. However, mortality rates and outcomes are comparable, with female patients reporting higher pain scores at 12-month follow-up.
