Stencil printing is a commonly used printing method, but it has not previously been used for production of pharmaceuticals. The aim of this study was to explore whether stencil printing of drug containing polymer inks could be used to manufacture flexible dosage forms with acceptable mass and content uniformity. Formulation development was supported by physicochemical characterization of the inks and final dosage forms. The printing of haloperidol (HAL) discs was performed using a prototype stencil printer. Ink development comprised of investigations of ink rheology in combination with printability assessment. The results show that stencil printing can be used to manufacture HAL doses in the therapeutic treatment range for 6-17 year-old children. The therapeutic HAL dose was achieved for the discs consisting of 16% of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and 1% of lactic acid (LA). The formulation pH remained above pH 4 and the results imply that the drug was amorphous. Linear dose escalation was achieved by an increase in aperture area of the print pattern, while keeping the stencil thickness fixed. Disintegration times of the orodispersible discs printed with 250 and 500 mu m thick stencils were below 30 s. In conclusion, stencil printing shows potential as a manufacturing method of pharmaceuticals.

Simulation of slot-coating of nanocellulosic material subject to a wall-stress dependent slip-velocity at die-walls

P. A. Fuaad, Agne Swerin, Fredrik Lundell, Martti Toivakka

Summary: Bio-based nanocellulosic materials are suitable for sustainable food packaging, but the complex fluid dynamics and wall slip phenomenon need to be considered during slot coating. Modeling the particle-depleted boundary layer can predict the coating effects under different conditions.

Effect of Water on a Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvent

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) formed by hydrogen bond donors and acceptors can be affected by the presence of water, leading to changes in physical properties such as phase separation, viscosity, self-diffusion, and conductivity. Water interferes with the hydrogen bonding network, enhancing ion pair formation. These water-induced changes have both beneficial and potentially negative effects on DESs.

Citral-to-Menthol Transformations in a Continuous Reactor over Ni/Mesoporous Aluminosilicate Extrudates Containing a Sepiolite Clay Binder

Summary: A one-pot continuous synthesis of menthols from citral was achieved with high selectivity under specific conditions. Catalyst deactivation over time resulted in a decrease in the selectivity to menthols and an increase in the selectivity to isopulegols. A kinetic model was developed to describe the reaction, taking into account both metal and acid site deactivation, and showed good agreement with the experimental data.

Water-soluble polysaccharides promoting production of redispersible nanocellulose

Liqiu Hu, Wenyang Xu, Jan Gustafsson, Rajesh Koppolu, Qingbo Wang, Emil Rosqvist, Anna Sundberg, Jouko Peltonen, Stefan Willfor, Martti Toivakka, Chunlin Xu

Summary: This study establishes a method of water-redispersible nanocellulose production by adding water-soluble polysaccharides, which saves energy consumption. The addition of carboxymethylated-galactoglucomannan improves fiber fibrillation and enhances the water redispersibility and film properties of nanocellulose.

Effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol on the cracking of particulate coating layers

Kyudeok Oh, Sunhyung Kim, Zhenghui Shen, Min Hwan Jeong, Martti Toivakka, Hak Lae Lee

Summary: This study investigated the effect of polymers on the cracking of particulate coating layers. The addition of polymers increased the drying stress in the layers, leading to cracking. However, different polymer additives had varying effects on the critical cracking thickness, indicating that the properties of the particulate layers varied depending on the polymer. The study also found a strong positive correlation between toughness and the critical cracking thickness of the layers.

Summary: This study clarifies the sensitivity response behavior of three low-cost dielectric materials and demonstrates their potential applications in low-pressure and high-pressure monitoring. The devices fabricated in the form of a metal-insulator-metal structure show both steady-state and transient response, which can be further improved by minimizing interference between different pixels. Additionally, progress has been made in the application of floor sensors.

Effect of Monomers and Deposition Conditions on Capacitive Polymer Films Prepared Using Oxidative Multilayers

Summary: This study investigates the film formation process of oxidative layer-by-layer multilayers, and shows that polyphosphate (PP) plays a crucial role in the stability and function of the multilayers. Low pH and long deposition times are beneficial for the formation of high-quality redox-active polymer films, while improving the electrical connection to the substrate and increasing film conductivity can make melanin films promising components for biodegradable supercapacitors.

Summary: A multilayer barrier paperboard was produced using nanocellulose and biodegradable thermoplastics in a roll-to-roll process. Hyperplaty kaolin pigments were blended into the nanocellulose and a plasticizer (glycerol) was added to improve the barrier properties. The results provide insight into the role of these elements in the barrier properties and pave the way for sustainable packaging production.

A discrete element method to model coating layer mechanical properties with bimodal and pseudo-full particle size distributions

Daniel Varney, Martti Toivakka, Douglas W. Bousfield

Summary: This study used the discrete element method to simulate the bending and tension deformations of a coating layer and investigated the impact of particle size distribution on its mechanical properties. The model predicted the conditions for crack formation and calculated the modulus, maximum stress, and strain-to-failure of the coating layer. The results were compared to experimental data, showing reasonable predictions for different latex-starch ratios and binder concentrations in both tensile and bending. The study also reported the influence of particle packing density on the mechanical properties.

Measurement and control of extensional viscosity in barrier coating dispersions

Watti Lehtimaki, Andreas Schroder, Vesa Kukkamo, Martti Toivakka

Summary: This study aims to understand the impact of different rheological additives on the extensional viscosity of barrier coating dispersions, and to examine the role of extensional viscosity in stabilizing a liquid curtain. The findings reveal that extensional viscosity plays a crucial role in stabilizing the liquid curtain, as it slows down hole expansion and prevents impurities and disturbances from causing holes. Additionally, the study shows that by adding suitable rheological additives, the extensional viscosity of the dispersions can be significantly increased without increasing the shear viscosity beyond the typical processable range.
