Introduction: Numerous studies have demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are deregulated in many cancers and exert their functions through multiple cancer-related biological processes. Glioma is the most common primary malignant central nervous system tumor and has a high fatality rate in adults. In current study, we aimed to determine the role and functional mechanism of the lncRNA BCYRN1 in glioma. Methods: Gain-of-function and loss-of function approaches were used to investigate the function of BCYRN1. The effects of BCYRN1 on glioma cell proliferation, migration and invasion were evaluated using MTS, Transwell and wound-healing assays. The correlation between the expression of BCYRN1 and miR-125a-5p was verified by quantitative real-time PCR. Results: The upregulation of BCYRN1 promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of glioma cells. Meanwhile, the knockdown of BCYRN1 had the opposite effects. BCYRN1 was negatively correlated with miR-125a-5p. Additionally, TAZ, the endogenous target of miR-125a-5p, could be regulated by BCYRN1 in RNA and protein levels. A miR-125a-5p inhibitor restored BCYRN1 siRNA function in glioma. Conclusion: The present study indicates that BCYRN1 promotes glioma cell proliferation, invasion and migration in vitro. Mechanistically, upregulated expression of BCYRN1 in glioma acts as a sponge to sequester the endogenous tumor suppressor miR-125a-5p and to further increase the expression TAZ. Our findings suggest that BCYRN1 is a novel oncogene and a new therapeutic target for glioma.

Synthetic apomixis enables stable transgenerational transmission of heterotic phenotypes in hybrid rice

Summary: In hybrid plants, heterosis produces high-yielding large plants, but generating hybrid seeds is costly. Apomixis, asexual reproduction via seeds, could revolutionize plant biology. Synthetic apomixis has enabled clonal reproduction of rice hybrids, but the inheritance and stability of the trait remained unclear. This study investigated the genetic and molecular stability of clonal plants for multiple generations, confirming the stable transmission of the synthetic apomixis trait and suggesting the feasibility of using apomixis in the future.

Study on the origin of Asian cultivated rice based on 15 domestication regions

Tingting Sun, Hongwei Lu, Kejian Wang

Summary: In this study, 15 domestication regions (DRs) in the rice genome were identified using wild and cultivated rice accessions. The closely affiliated wild accessions of temperate japonica came mainly from southern China, while those of tropical japonica came from China and India. Similarly, the closely affiliated wild accessions of indica rice came from Southeast Asia, China, and India. The results provide valuable insights into the origin and domestication history of Asian cultivated rice.

Effect of Cross-Linking Density on Non-Linear Viscoelasticity of Vulcanized SBR: A MD Simulation and Experimental Study

Tian Yan, Ke-Jian Wang, Xiu-Ying Zhao, Yang-Yang Gao

Summary: There has been limited research on the influence of vulcanized characteristics, especially cross-linking density, on the dynamic shear behavior of vulcanized rubber. This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of different cross-linking densities on the dynamic shear behavior of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The results show a significant drop in the storage modulus when the strain amplitude exceeds 0.1, attributed to polymer bond fractures and decreased molecular chain flexibility. Higher cross-linking densities impede molecular chain motion and increase the storage modulus of SBR. The results are verified through comparisons with existing literature.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of metastasis in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) using single-cell transcriptomics. A specific cell subpopulation, LUAD_IGF2BP2, was found to promote angiogenesis and metastasis in LUAD by activating the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. These findings provide new insights into the multicellular ecosystems of LUAD and potential targets for antiangiogenic therapy.

Carbonized Polymer Dots Enhancing Interface Stability of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathodes

Lin Li, Yaojian Zhang, Naifang Hu, Kejian Wang, Yuehui Liu, Xiaogang Wang, Xinhong Zhou, Jun Ma, Guanglei Cui

Summary: In this study, carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) were successfully introduced onto the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathodes to improve their interfacial stability and cycling performance. The CPDs formed strong covalent bonds with transition metal ions at the NCM811 surface, preventing surface structure degradation and transition metal ion dissolution. As a result, the NCM811@1 wt% CPDs exhibited enhanced cycling performance with a capacity retention of 89.77% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C compared to 55.39% of the bare NCM811. This facile and effective surface decoration strategy provides valuable guidance for improving the stability and cycling performance of Ni-rich cathodes.

Upregulation of FAM50A promotes cancer development

Mei-Zhen Hu, Zhi-Zheng Dai, Hong-Yu Ji, An-Qi Zheng, Hang Liang, Mei-Mei Shen, Jun-Nan Liu, Kai-Fu Tang, Shu-Juan Zhu, Ke-Jian Wang

Summary: FAM50A is upregulated in multiple types of common cancer tissues and its elevated expression is associated with poor prognosis and immune cell infiltration. Promoter hypomethylation may contribute to FAM50A upregulation. Inhibition of FAM50A expression leads to DNA damage, induction of interferon beta and interleukin-6 expression, and suppression of cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and migration.
