Hole defects embedded in rocks have a crucial influence on their stability and failure mechanism. The purpose of this research is to explore the mechanical response and fracture behavior around inverted U-shaped openings in rocks under compressive stress. To begin with, a multitude of uniaxial compression experiments on prismatic sandstone samples with one single or two inverted U-shaped openings with different configurations were carried out. In the experiments, the advanced DIC (digital image correlation) and AE (acoustic emission) apparatus was combinedly utilized to monitor the crack growth and determine the threshold stresses involved in fracture behavior. After that, the stress distributions around the openings under unidirectional stress were simulated by a numerical study. Test results suggest that the presence of openings strongly degrades the strength and deformation parameters, and the reduction degree depends on the number and configuration of openings. During the fracture process, five sorts of cracks, namely the elementary tensile crack, posterior tensile crack, slabbing crack, shear crack and spalling crack, are formed around the openings. For the samples containing two openings, three categories of hole coalescence appear: slabbing coalescence, shear coalescence and tensile coalescence. The failure mode of the samples containing one single or two diagonal openings is dominated by shear cracks, while that of the other samples is tensile-shear failure. Stress analysis shows that the concentrated stresses at the peripheries of the openings can better explain the fracture behavior.

Probability Estimates of Short-Term Rockburst Risk with Ensemble Classifiers

Weizhang Liang, Yuksel Asli Sari, Guoyan Zhao, Stephen D. McKinnon, Hao Wu

Summary: This study proposes five ensemble classifiers to estimate the probability of short-term rockburst risk, which were verified using 91 rockburst samples. The effects of different indicator combinations on prediction results were analyzed, and the proposed ensemble classifiers outperformed individual learners in overall performance, with accuracy-based and F-1-based classifiers being preferred for predicting short-term rockburst risk.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Mode I Fracture Process of Rock by Semi-Circular Bend Specimen

Peng Xiao, Diyuan Li, Guoyan Zhao, Meng Liu

Summary: The stress field, fracture process zone (FPZ), and crack propagation velocity of SCB specimen during the fracture process of rock specimens were analyzed using experimental and numerical methods. The heart-shaped stress concentration zones formed near the peak load points are identified as FPZ, which forms before macro fracture occurs. The crack propagation process includes two stages: rapid crack initial development stage and final crack splitting stage.

Summary: When the coal seam floor contains a confined aquifer, water inrush disasters are highly likely to occur. The failure behavior of the coal seam floor in the paste filling working face can be assessed through a theoretical model and numerical analysis, with the filling interval and long-term strength of the filling body having significant impacts on the floor failure depth, stress and displacement distributions, and plastic zone.

Cooperative P-Wave Velocity Measurement with Full Waveform Moment Tensor Inversion in Transversely Anisotropic Media

Ju Ma, Shuang Wu, Yuan Zhao, Guoyan Zhao

Summary: Precise stochastic approaches can quantitatively calculate source uncertainties and eliminate the influence of anisotropy on moment tensor inversion. Results show that anisotropy and noise have a minimal effect on fault plane rotation for a pure shear source. Complex sources are more sensitive to velocity models and full moment tensor solutions exhibit larger fault plane rotation than double couple solutions. Collaborative inversion improves fault plane solution accuracy and reduces spurious components.

Summary: This study proposes a method for determining the parameters of the brittle-ductile transition model in inclined backfilled stopes and establishes a model to simulate the mining process of ore bodies with varying depths. The results show that mining-induced stress will transfer to upper stopes and the stratum below the deepest stope, and the range and influence of mining-induced stress will increase with deep mining.

Failure Transition and Validity of Brazilian Disc Test under Different Loading Configurations: A Numerical Study

Peng Xiao, Guoyan Zhao, Huanxin Liu

Summary: This paper simulates the fracture process of granite discs under different loading configurations using a coupled finite-discrete element method. The results show that the maximum tensile stress value is located within 18 mm of the vertical range of the disc center under different loading configurations. The small diameter rods loading results in invalid tensile strength, while flat platen loading and curved jaws loading can obtain valid tensile strength. The error of small diameter rods loading is 13%, while the errors of flat platen loading and curved jaws loading are both 1%. Curved jaws loading is the most suitable method for measuring the tensile strength of brittle materials.

Summary: This study proposes a novel multicriteria decision-making method to solve rockburst hazard evaluation problems and determine the hazard levels of mines under uncertain circumstances. The method adopts interval-valued fuzzy numbers to express initial indicator information, extends the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory and entropy methods with interval-valued fuzzy numbers to determine fuzzy indicator weights comprehensively, and extends the complex proportional assessment approach with interval-valued fuzzy numbers to determine the rockburst hazard level. The proposed method is reliable for rockburst hazard evaluation in deep mining engineering, as validated in the case study of the Jiaojia gold mine.

Fracture response and mechanisms of brittle rock with different numbers of openings under uniaxial loading

Hao Wu, Dan Ma, A. J. S. Spearing, Guoyan Zhao

Summary: Understanding the failure phenomena and mechanisms of stress regime on tunnels is critical, as hazardous failure phenomena frequently occur in deep hardrock tunnels. This study systematically investigated the mechanical behavior of rock specimens with different numbers of openings under uniaxial compression, revealing the significant impact of the number of openings on the weakening effect of rock mechanical properties. The crack evolution process in specimens with openings includes tensile cracks, spalling cracks, and shear cracks, and the crack initiation mechanism can be fully explained based on the stress distribution law around the opening.
