Summary: Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) has been found to be an effective method for lignocellulose fractionation. In this study, the improvement of milled softwood mixture (MSM) fractionation using chlorine chloride-formic acid (ChCl:FA) was investigated, achieving high removal of hemicellulose and lignin while retaining glucan. The microwave assisted ChCl:FA pretreatment showed promising results in obtaining high quality glucan and lignin at high solid loading.

Summary: Anthocyanins are extracted using alternative solvents such as ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, and natural deep eutectic solvents, which are more environmentally friendly and efficient compared to conventional solvents. Acid-based deep eutectic solvents with 20-30% water content showed the highest anthocyanin extraction yield. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction was the most common and efficient method, and DES-based extracts exhibited the highest stability and antioxidant activity. Fruits and their by-products are the most commonly used samples, while cereal and legumes are less explored.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic-assisted natural deep eutectic solvents (UAE-NADESs) were used to extract five polyphenols from Chaenomeles speciosa efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner. The optimal composition of the NADESs was Choline chloride-urea-malonic acid (ChCl-Ur-MA), and the process parameters were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA). The NADES extract showed higher yields and better antioxidant activities compared to traditional organic solvents. This study provides a basis for the development and efficient extraction of polyphenols from other plants using NADESs.

Summary: In this study, the extraction of phenolic compounds from olive leaves was optimized using three glycerol-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with lysine, proline, and arginine. The results showed that glycerol-lysine DES exhibited the best extraction performance. The content of tyrosol was high in the extracts, and a linear relationship between tyrosol content and total phenolic content was observed.

Summary: This study found that defatted rosehip seed waste contains polar polyphenolic compounds that have been scarcely investigated. The researchers used supercritical carbon dioxide extraction and natural deep eutectic solvents to extract polyphenols from the defatted seed waste. Ternary NADES formulations based on lactic acid showed superior extraction potential.

Summary: This study presents the design of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) and HDES-based microemulsions for the extraction of curcuminoids and ar-turmerone from Curcuma longa L. The results show that HDES and its microemulsions are more effective and environmentally friendly than conventional organic solvents, and they are also compatible with food and pharmaceutical formulations.

Summary: An environmentally friendly extraction method using hydrothermal-deep eutectic solvents pretreatment was proposed to simultaneously separate hemicelluloses and high purity lignin from moso bamboo. The method showed efficient fractionation of lignocellulose, with most cellulose retained in the residues, providing a potential pathway for comprehensive utilization of lignocellulose.

Summary: Due to the increasing scarcity of lithium resources, the recovery of lithium ions from water resources is an urgent problem. This paper proposes an environmentally friendly liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) process for lithium ion recovery. Nine hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) were formed using menthol (DLM) as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and octanoic acid, decanoic acid, and lauric acid (LA) as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs). HDESs synthesized with DLM and LA showed the best effect and were selected for the lithium extraction experiment. The single extraction efficiency of lithium ions was 80.69%, with optimized parameters such as rotational speed, equilibrium time, pH, molar ratio, and initial concentration.

Summary: The development of sustainable chemistry has led to the emergence of new materials, with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a promising non-toxic alternative to toxic organic solvents, seeing a significant increase in their applications in analytical chemistry in recent years. The vast amount of information generated from studies associated with DESs needs continuous revision.

Summary: This study investigates the designable diversity of ternary ChCl/Gly coordinated with various metal-salts and their effectiveness in lignocellulosic pretreatment. Different solvent properties and reaction characteristics were elucidated, showing that alkaline/acidic strengths and hydrogen-bonding forces play key roles in component fractionation. It was found that a strong alkaline ChCl/Gly-K2CO3 solvent achieved 72% delignification with significant holo-cellulose preservation, while Lewis acidic ChCl/Gly-FeCl3 (or AlCl3) removed a substantial amount of hemicellulose and lignin. Based on the lignin structural characterization, a potential reaction mechanism related to solvent properties was proposed to develop efficient ternary coordinated deep eutectic solvents.
