Background and Aim: Although air pollution is a serious problem in Ahvaz, the association between air pollution and respiratory diseases has not been studied enough in this area. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between short-term exposure to air pollutants and the risk of hospital admissions due to asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis in Ahvaz. Methods: Hospital admissions data and air pollutants including O-3, NO, NO2, SO2, CO, PM10, and PM2.5 were obtained from 2008 to 2018. Adjusted Quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed lag model, controlled for trend, seasonality, weather, weekdays, and holidays was used for data analysis. Results: The results showed a significant increase in hospital admissions for asthma (RR=1.004, 95% CI: 1.002-1.007) and COPD (RR=1.003, 95% CI: 1.001-1.005) associated with PM2.5. PM10 was associated with increased hospital admissions due to bronchiectasis in both genders (Men: RR=1.003, 95% CI: 1.001-1.006) (Female: RR=1.003, 95% CI: 1.000-1.006). NO2 was also associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for asthma (RR=1.040, 95% CI: 1.008-1.074) and COPD (RR=1.049, 95% CI: 1.010-1.090). SO2 was associated with the risk of hospital admissions of asthma (RR=1.069, 95% CI: 1.017-1.124) and bronchiectasis (RR=1.030, 95% CI: 1.005-1.056). Finally, CO was associated with COPD (RR=1.643, 95% CI: 1.233-2.191) and bronchiectasis (RR=1.542, 95% CI: 1.035-2.298) hospital admissions. Conclusion: Short-term exposure to air pollutants significantly increases the risk of hospital admissions for asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis in the adult and elderly population.

Investigation of Ambient Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Populated Middle Eastern City

Gholamreza Goudarzi, Nadali Alavi, Ali Akbar Babaei, Sahar Geravandi, Esmaeil Idani, Shokrolah Salmanzadeh, Mohammad Javad Mohammadi

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics, sources, and health risks of PM10-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on residents in different regions of Ahvaz, Southwest Iran. The results showed that industrial areas had the highest PAHs levels, while residential areas had the lowest. Industrial processing and petroleum refining were identified as major outdoor sources of PAHs. Increased exposure concentration of PAHs was found to significantly increase the risk of health issues.

Evaluating the effect of heat stress on cognitive performance of petrochemical workers: A field study

Zahra Rastegar, Mohammad Reza Ghotbi Ravandi, Sajad Zare, Narges Khanjani, Reza Esmaeili

Summary: Heat stress has a significant impact on the cognitive performance of petrochemical workers, leading to increased omission errors and response time at the end of the shift. Additionally, heat stress increases reaction time and decreases average correct responses during the shift. Overall, heat stress impairs cognitive performance of workers by increasing commission errors and response time, and reducing average correct responses at the end of the shift.

The impact of meteorological parameters on PM10 and visibility during the Middle Eastern dust storms

Heidar Maleki, Armin Sorooshian, Khan Alam, Ahmad Fathi, Tammy Weckwerth, Hadi Moazed, Arsalan Jamshidi, Ali Akbar Babaei, Vafa Hamid, Fatemeh Soltani, Gholamreza Goudarzi

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between meteorological parameters, PM10, AOD, air mass source origin, and visibility during severe desert dust storms in Ahvaz, Iran. The study finds that there is an alarming PM10 concentration peak before the dominant peak of the storm, and that wind speed, relative humidity, dew point temperature, and air pressure are all associated with PM10 concentration.

Summary: The presence of criteria air pollutants in the ambient air poses a serious threat to public health. This study evaluated the health outcomes of cardiovascular mortalities, hospital admissions with cardiovascular disease, and hospital admissions for respiratory disease due to exposure to these pollutants. The results showed that increased levels of particle matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfide dioxide were associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. Thus, these findings are of great importance in improving public health.

Investigating Airborne Pollen Grains and Fungal Spores that Might be Related to Thunderstorm Asthma Attacks

Hassan Dehdari Rad, Heydar Maleki, Gholamreza Goudarzi, Mohammad-Ali Assarehzadegan, Ismaeil Idani, Ali Akbar Babaei, Abdolkazem Neisi, Saeed Jahantab, Mohammad Reza Parishani, Mehri Dinarvand, Armin Sorooshian, Foroogh Namjoyan, Mojtaba Nakhaei Pour

Summary: Pollen and fungi cause annual acute respiratory attacks worldwide, with thunderstorm asthma attacks leading to hospitalizations in Ahvaz. A study collected various pollen grains and fungal spores during two consecutive autumn and winter seasons. A fungal spore called Curvularia genous showed a significant correlation with daily rainfall, reaching its peak during the first rain. The outbreak may be triggered by a combination of Curvularia genous spores, industrial air pollutants, and pollen grains from the predominant tree species in Ahvaz.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns on air quality index: a systematic review

Mehrsa Drikvandi, Mahdis Goudarzi, Shahrzad Molavinia, Zeynab Baboli, Gholamreza Goudarzi

Summary: During the COVID-19 outbreak, lockdown policies implemented by many countries had a positive impact on the Air Quality Index (AQI) by restricting air-polluting activities. However, these policies were found to be ineffective in controlling natural sources of air pollution and local dust. This study highlights the importance for policymakers to approve legislation to limit air pollutant sources.

Temporal change in cold and heat-related burden of mortality: an evidence of increasing heat impact in Iran

Omid Aboubakri, Reza Rezaee, Afshin Maleki, Mahdi Safari, Gholamreza Goudarzi, Guoxing Li, Mohammad Sadegh Hassanvand, Rahim Sharafkhani

Summary: This study compared the burden of heat and cold-related mortality between 2015 and 2022 with 2008-2014 in eight cities of Kurdistan, Iran. It was found that heat and extreme heat caused more mortality in the later period, with higher relative risk values. This emphasizes the need for adaptation or preventive strategies for heat-related mortality in the region.

A Review of Studies Using Air Q Software for Prediction of Air Pollution Health Effects in Iran

Narges Khanjani, Mohammad Amin Farahmandfard, Marzieh Eslahi

Summary: This review summarizes studies on the health effects of air pollution in Iran using the Air Q software. A total of 44 studies were identified, with main pollutants being PM, NO2, O-3, and SO2. Results showed that levels of pollutants were higher than WHO guidelines and associated with significant health effects. However, due to variability in pollutant levels and study locations, it was not possible to aggregate the total number of casualties. The review highlights the need for measures to improve air quality, such as using clean renewable energies and increasing green spaces, to reduce health impacts in Iran.
