The detection of an oscillating pattern in the bispectrum of density perturbations could suggest the existence of a high-energy second minimum in the Higgs potential. If the Higgs field resided in this new minimum during inflation and was brought back to the electroweak vacuum by thermal corrections during reheating, the coupling of Standard Model particles to the inflaton would leave its imprint on the bispectrum. We focus on the fermions, whose dispersion relation can be modified by the coupling to the inflaton, leading to an enhanced particle production during inflation even if their mass during inflation is larger than the Hubble scale. This results in a large non-analytic contribution to non-Gaussianities, with an amplitude fNL as large as 100 in the squeezed limit, potentially detectable in future 21-cm surveys. Measuring the contributions from two fermions would allow us to compute the ratio of their masses, and to ascribe the origin of the signal to a new Higgs minimum. Such a discovery would be a tremendous step towards understanding the vacuum instability of the Higgs potential, and could have fascinating implications for anthropic considerations.

Causal gravitational waves as a probe of free streaming particles and the expansion of the Universe

Anson Hook, Gustavo Marques-Tavares, Davide Racco

Summary: This article focuses on analyzing the low frequency end of the gravitational wave spectrum, explaining the phenomena of suppressed production of gravitational waves due to the excitation of an over-damped harmonic oscillator and their enhancement when frozen outside the horizon from a physics perspective. The differences between sub-horizon and super-horizon physics lead to distinct spectral features that can directly measure the conformal Hubble rate at which a phase transition occurred. Additionally, the presence of free-streaming particles during a phase transition affects the behavior of super-horizon modes in the spectrum, resulting in oscillatory features and a steeper decrease in the spectrum at low frequencies.

Precision cosmology with primordial GW backgrounds in presence of astrophysical foregrounds

D. Racco, D. Poletti

Summary: The era of gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy allows the detection of both astrophysical GW foregrounds and the presence of primordial GW backgrounds. The low-frequency tail of the GW spectrum offers an opportunity to measure cosmological parameters and free-streaming particles at earlier epochs. The uncertainties in astrophysical foregrounds may affect the sensitivity to a primordial signal, but with proper modeling of contributions from black hole binaries, precision cosmology with primordial GW backgrounds can still be achieved.
