Summary: Urban mobility conditions play a main role in shaping inequalities in megacities. In the municipality of Sao Paulo, work-related trips take longer, are lengthier, and more motorized compared to other reasons. This study demonstrates the importance of incorporating spatial planning of land use within transport planning to decrease transport inequities and improve quality of life.

Summary: The study revealed a negative correlation between the percentage of green spaces in urban areas and anxiety, while roofs, asphalt, and shadow were positively associated with anxiety. The findings suggest the importance of enhancing greenery with diverse vegetation compositions in urban environments, especially in megacities, to enhance the mental health of residents.

Summary: Epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between osteoporosis and the risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease. In this study based on the SPAH study, researchers found an association between coronary calcification and bone microarchitecture in older adults. The results suggest an inverse relationship between CAC and cortical bone content, as assessed by HR-pQCT, with higher coronary calcification in individuals older than 65 years.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution air quality analysis over Sao Paulo, Brazil using the EURopean Air Pollution Dispersion - Inverse Model (EURAD-IM), with detailed aerosol simulations. Transport patterns from different regions were identified based on distinct meteorological conditions and pollution plume features, allowing for a detailed exploration of air pollution patterns and complex interactions between local and long-range transport sources. Model evaluation against observational data and Lidar profiles showed good agreement, providing insights into the characteristics of air pollution in the region.

Summary: The study found an association between aircraft noise and increased risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease mortality, particularly in areas exposed to the highest noise levels. However, the risk for stroke did not show a clear correlation with the different noise levels assessed. Road traffic density may be an important confounder in this association.

Summary: The partial lockdown measures in place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, amid the COVID-19 pandemic had a positive impact on air quality, with significant reductions in pollutant emissions observed when the social isolation index was high. The study found that pollutants such as NO2, NOx, NO and CO had the strongest negative associations with the social isolation index, and the greatest reductions in emissions were observed when the social isolation index reached an average of 52.20%.

Summary: The study proposes a method for extracting built-up areas in urban planning applications using SAR images, by analyzing the scattering characteristics of built-up areas and canopy-covered areas, and introducing a spectral reconfiguration descriptor in the frequency domain to differentiate between buildings and vegetation. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in achieving low false alarm rates and high accuracy, with great practical significance and potential for improvement in urban remote sensing applications.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) and medications that may impair cognition (PIM-Cog) with cognitive performance among older adults. The study found that the use of PIM and PIM-Cog was associated with poor cognitive function. Therefore, reviewing the use of PIM and deprescribing these drugs may be an effective way to improve cognitive function.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether individuals with MetS have a high salt consumption and to identify which components of the MetS diagnosis could be independently related to high salt consumption. The results showed that the salt intake was higher in individuals with MetS compared to those without MetS, regardless of sex. However, high salt intake was only observed in MetS participants with elevated waist circumference and/or blood pressure, not with other MetS criteria.

Summary: Current data suggests that there is a relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in the general population. This study aimed to further investigate this association using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). The results showed that participants aged 35 to 74 years with lower HRV values were more likely to have prevalent CAC, and this relationship may be influenced by sex and age factors.

Summary: This study investigated the time-dependent effects of traditional risk factors on functional disability in all-cause mortality post-stroke using data from a long-term stroke cohort. The findings showed that age and functional disability at 6 months after ischemic stroke had time-dependent effects on all-cause mortality risk up to 12 years of follow-up. Worsening disability had the strongest impact on mortality, particularly in the first two years after a stroke event.
