Proximity to green spaces has been shown to be beneficial to several cardiovascular outcomes in urban spaces. Few studies, however, have analyzed the relationship between these outcomes and green space or land cover uses in low-medium income megacities, where the consequences of rapid and inordinate urbanization impose several health hazards. This study used a subgroup of the dataset from The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health ELSA-BRASIL (n = 3418) to identify the correlation between the medical diagnosis of hypertension and green spaces in the megacity of Sao Paulo. Land cover classification was performed based on the random forest algorithm using geometrically corrected aerial photography (orthophoto). Three different indicators of exposure to green spaces were used: number of street trees, land cover and number of parks within 1 km. We used logistic regression models to obtain the association of the metrics exposure and health outcomes. The number of street trees in the regional governments (OR = 0.937 and number of parks within 1 km (OR = 0.876) were inversely associated with a diagnosis of hypertension. Sixty-three percent of the population had no parks within 1 km of their residence. Our data indicate the need to encourage large-scale street tree planting and increase the number of qualified parks in megacities.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) and medications that may impair cognition (PIM-Cog) with cognitive performance among older adults. The study found that the use of PIM and PIM-Cog was associated with poor cognitive function. Therefore, reviewing the use of PIM and deprescribing these drugs may be an effective way to improve cognitive function.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether individuals with MetS have a high salt consumption and to identify which components of the MetS diagnosis could be independently related to high salt consumption. The results showed that the salt intake was higher in individuals with MetS compared to those without MetS, regardless of sex. However, high salt intake was only observed in MetS participants with elevated waist circumference and/or blood pressure, not with other MetS criteria.

Summary: In this study, the impact of three therapeutic strategies (medical therapy alone, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)) on long-term survival of ACS patients was evaluated. The results showed that compared to patients receiving medical therapy alone, those who underwent PCI had a lower probability of fatal events during the four-year follow-up period.

Association of coronary artery calcium with heart rate variability in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health- ELSA-Brasil

R. A. Hoshi, I. S. Santos, M. S. Bittencourt, E. M. Dantas, R. V. Andreao, J. G. Mill, P. A. Lotufo, I. M. Bensenor

Summary: Current data suggests that there is a relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in the general population. This study aimed to further investigate this association using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). The results showed that participants aged 35 to 74 years with lower HRV values were more likely to have prevalent CAC, and this relationship may be influenced by sex and age factors.

Summary: This study investigated the time-dependent effects of traditional risk factors on functional disability in all-cause mortality post-stroke using data from a long-term stroke cohort. The findings showed that age and functional disability at 6 months after ischemic stroke had time-dependent effects on all-cause mortality risk up to 12 years of follow-up. Worsening disability had the strongest impact on mortality, particularly in the first two years after a stroke event.
