Several treatment modalities have been proposed to regenerate bone, including guided bone regeneration (GBR) where barrier membranes play an important role by isolating soft tissue and allowing bone to grow. Not all membranes biologically behave the same way, as they differ from their origin and structure, with reflections on their mechanical properties and on their clinical performance. Collagen membranes have been widely used in medicine and dentistry, because of their high biocompatibility and capability of promoting wound healing. Recently, collagen membranes have been applied in guided bone regeneration with comparable outcomes to non-resorbable membranes. Aim of this work is to provide a review on the main features, application, outcomes, and clinical employment of the different types of collagen membranes. Comparisons with non-resorbable membranes are clarified, characteristics of cross-linked collagen versus native collagen, use of different grafting materials and need for membrane fixation are explored in order to gain awareness of the indications and limits and to be able to choose the right membrane required by the clinical condition.

Short versus Longer Implants in Sites without the Need for Bone Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Luigi Guida, Eriberto Bressan, Gennaro Cecoro, Armando Davide Volpe, Massimo Del Fabbro, Marco Annunziata

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that short implants perform as well as longer implants in edentulous sites without the need for bone augmentation. The survival rate of short implants is similar to that of longer implants, but longer implants experience more bone loss at 1 and 5 years, while short implants have more technical complications at 10 years.

Effects of Magnetic Stimulation on Dental Implant Osseointegration: A Scoping Review

Gennaro Cecoro, Debora Bencivenga, Marco Annunziata, Nunzio Cennamo, Fulvio Della Ragione, Alessandro Formisano, Angelantonio Piccirillo, Emanuela Stampone, Pio Antonio Volpe, Luigi Zeni, Adriana Borriello, Luigi Guida

Summary: This scoping review evaluates the influence of magnetic field stimulation on dental implant osseointegration. In vitro studies show a positive effect of Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields (PEMF) on bone cell proliferation, while the effects of Static magnetic Fields from permanent Magnets (SFM) are conflicting. Both types of stimulation induce cell adhesion and osteogenic differentiation. In vivo studies demonstrate increased bone-to-implant contact rate and positive effects on implant stability. However, further preclinical and clinical studies are needed to assess the effect of magnetic fields on dental implant osseointegration more clearly.

Towards a point-of-care test to cover atto-femto and pico-nano molar concentration ranges in interleukin 6 detection exploiting PMMA-based plasmonic biosensor chips

Nunzio Cennamo, Angelantonio Piccirillo, Debora Bencivenga, Francesco Arcadio, Marco Annunziata, Fulvio Della Ragione, Luigi Guida, Luigi Zeni, Adriana Borriello

Summary: Point-of-Care (POC) tests based on biomarkers are crucial for advancing medicine, especially in monitoring acute and chronic inflammations. Among the pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin 6 (IL-6) is considered one of the most important. This study presents the development of two IL-6 biosensors using a combination of the same antibody self-assembled monolayer and two different plasmonic probes. Experimental results show that these biosensors can detect IL-6 in different concentration ranges. The proposed sensing approach has the potential to be used in POC devices for diagnosing and monitoring oral and systemic diseases by detecting IL-6 in the desired concentration range.
