Significant advancements have been made in early intervention programs for children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, measuring treatment response for children with ASD is difficult due to the heterogeneity of changes in symptoms, which can be subtle, especially over a short period of time. Here we outline the challenge of evaluating treatment response with currently available measures as well as newly developed or refined measures that may be useful in clinical trials for young children with ASD. Continued development of treatment outcome measures will help the field identify and compare efficacious interventions and tailor treatments for children with ASD. (c) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Atypical Mediofrontal Theta Oscillations Underlying Cognitive Control in Kindergarteners With Autism Spectrum Disorder

George A. Buzzell, Hannah R. Thomas, Yeo Bi Choi, So Hyun Kim

Summary: Children with ASD exhibit deficits in error-related mediofrontal theta power, particularly during a late time window, which predicts poorer academic and social outcomes. Early intervention targeting these cognitive control processes may lead to more successful functional outcomes for children with ASD.

School-entry language skills as predictors of concurrent and future academic, social, and adaptive skills in kindergarteners with ASD

Elizabeth P. McKernan, So Hyun Kim

Summary: The study compared language abilities of children with ASD and typically developing children at kindergarten entry, finding that children with ASD showed more impairments. It was also found that pragmatic language abilities at kindergarten entry predicted concurrent math and reading achievement for children with ASD. Furthermore, pragmatic language significantly predicted various functional skills at kindergarten exit for children with ASD.

Social communication in fragile X syndrome: pilot examination of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC)

Rebecca Shaffer, Angela John Thurman, Lucienne Ronco, Diego Cadavid, Shane Raines, So Hyun Kim

Summary: This study examined the suitability of a social communication outcome measure called BOSCC-MV for individuals with FXS. The results showed that BOSCC-MV demonstrated strong inter-rater and test-retest reliability in FXS, and had strong convergent validity with standard clinical measures. This suggests that BOSCC-MV has the potential to be an effective outcome measure for social communication in FXS.

Sex Differences in Autism: Examining Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors in Children and Adolescents Enrolled in a National ASD Cohort

Emily F. Dillon, Stephen Kanne, Rebecca J. Landa, Robert Annett, Raphael Bernier, Catherine Bradley, Laura Carpenter, So Hyun Kim, Julia Parish-Morris, Robert Schultz, Ericka L. Wodka

Summary: This study utilized a large dataset (SPARK) to examine sex differences in ASD symptoms. The findings revealed small but consistent differences between males and females, with different markers for each gender. Language concerns were more apparent in males, aiding in the diagnosis of ASD, while early motor concerns in females may hinder diagnosis as they are not captured within traditional ASD diagnostic criteria.

Caregiver Language Input Supports Sentence Diversity in Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Elysha Clark-Whitney, Claire Brito Klein, Pamela A. Hadley, Catherine Lord, So Hyun Kim

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the change in sentence diversity of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over 6 months of treatment with Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI), as well as explore potential predictors of this change. The results showed that changes in caregiver NDBI strategy use and caregiver baseline Toy Talk were significant predictors of changes in sentence diversity.

Intra-topic latency as an automated behavioral marker of treatment response in autism spectrum disorder

Elizabeth P. McKernan, Manoj Kumar, Adriana Di Martino, Lisa Shulman, Alexander Kolevzon, Catherine Lord, Shrikanth Narayanan, So Hyun Kim

Summary: This study aimed to identify an automated behavioral marker of treatment response in social communication in children with ASD. Using an automated computational method, the study successfully derived the latency of response between children with ASD and adult social partners. The results indicate that the automated measure of latency is a scalable and objective method for quantifying treatment response in children with ASD.

Examining Treatment Outcomes Across Contexts: How Do Child Baseline Characteristics Impact Measurement of Treatment Response?

Rebecca Grzadzinski, Alapika Jatkar, Kevin Donovan, Kinh Truong, Alison Holbrook, Catherine Lord, So Hyun Kim

Summary: The evaluation of overlap between ADOS BOSCC and Standard BOSCC, as well as exploring child characteristics that can predict change, are important steps in consolidating data-driven definitions of improvement. Initial characteristics can guide tailoring of early intervention to maximize treatment outcomes and help determine which outcome measures to use.

Summary: The study shows that children with ASD exhibit more severe worsening of behaviors during fever compared to TD children, though there may be rare cases of behavioral improvements among ASD children. Further research is needed to elucidate the nature of this phenomenon.

Molecular and network-level mechanisms explaining individual differences in autism spectrum disorder

Amanda M. M. Buch, E. E. Vertes, Jakob Seidlitz, So Hyun Kim, Logan Grosenick, Conor Liston

Summary: Using a large neuroimaging dataset, this study identified three latent dimensions of functional brain network connectivity that predicted individual differences in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) behaviors. Four reproducible ASD subgroups were discovered with distinct functional connectivity alterations and clinical symptom profiles, which were validated in an independent sample. Integrating neuroimaging data with gene expression data revealed that ASD-related functional connectivity could be explained by regional differences in the expression of distinct ASD-related gene sets, implicating different molecular signaling pathways.
