Background In the seventh edition TNM staging system for lung cancer, a high maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) on positron emission tomography was regarded as a risk factor for occult lymph node metastasis in clinical T1N0 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, in the eighth edition TNM classification, tumors are classified according to the size of the invasive component only, and those with invasive component size <= 3 cm are diagnosed as stage T1. The aim of this study was to reassess the risk factors for occult lymph node metastasis under the eighth edition TNM classification for lung cancer. Methods From 2010 to 2017, 553 patients with clinical N0 peripheral NSCLC with invasive component size <= 3 cm underwent anatomical lobectomy with systematic lymph node dissection. We analyzed these cases retrospectively to identify risk factors for postoperative nodal upstaging. Results Among 553 study patients, 54 (9.8%) had nodal upstaging after surgery. In multivariate analysis adopting the eighth edition TNM classification for lung cancer, serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.113, p = 0.002), invasive component size (HR = 2.398, p = 0.004), visceral pleural invasion (HR = 2.901, p = 0.005), and lymphatic invasion (HR = 9.336, p < 0.001) were significant risk factors for nodal upstaging, but SUVmax was not. Conclusion SUVmax is not a predictor of nodal upstaging in clinical N0 peripheral NSCLC with invasive component size <= 3 cm under the eighth edition TNM classification for lung cancer. Significant risk factors of occult lymph node metastasis are serum CEA level, tumor invasive component size, visceral pleural invasion, and lymphatic invasion.

Natural History of Contralateral Bullae/Blebs After Ipsilateral Video-Assisteu Thoracoscopic Surgery for Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax A Retrospective Cohort Study

Jin Yong Jeong, Ah Young Shin, Jick Hwan Ha, Jong Hui Suh, Si Young Choi, Ju Sang Kim, Chan Beom Park

Summary: This study investigated whether contralateral bullae/blebs should be resected simultaneously during ipsilateral VATS bullectomy. The presence of contralateral bullae/blebs was found to be associated with a higher risk of contralateral pneumothorax, but the annual rate of pneumothorax decreased over time. Therefore, a conservative approach is recommended for unruptured contralateral bullae/blebs.

Yu-Rim Hong, Soumen Dutta, Sun Woo Jang, Odongo Francis Ngome Okello, Hyeonae Im, Si-Young Choi, Jeong Woo Han, In Su Lee

Summary: This study addresses the inefficient interfacial contact effect in Pt-catalyzed alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by producing atomically flat two-dimensional Pt nanodendrites (2D-PtNDs) and realizing a maximized and firmly bound lateral heterointerface with NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH). This work demonstrates the importance of shape and facet of Pt in creating heterointerfaces that provide catalytic synergy for efficient hydrogen production.

Summary: This study demonstrates the possibility of achieving structural analysis with sub-pixel accuracy by segmenting atomic signals from background and applying denoising techniques. The elimination of Poisson noise and residual noise greatly increases the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Extracting centroids of atomic columns using K-means clustering allows for a deeper understanding of the local structural dynamics.

Summary: We have achieved the conformal growth of sp2-hybridized few-layer h-BN on an array of Si-based nanotrenches using pulsed-mode MOCVD method. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that B-O bonds formed on the noncatalytic SiO2 surface serve as nucleation sites for the subsequent formation of mixed sp2- and sp3-hybridized BON2 and BN3. This allows for the conformal growth of few-layer sp2-hybridized h-BN with excellent step coverage, which can be used for advanced three-dimensional Si-based nanoscale architectures.

Summary: Topological textures of ferroelectric polarizations have potential applications in future information technology. However, energy losses and deviations from stability can affect the symmetry and shape of these textures. In this study, we investigated the domain structure of bismuth tungsten oxide thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates using advanced microscopy techniques. We discovered a hidden phase with a different polarization orientation that promotes the formation of flux closure domains, bringing us one step closer to an isotropic two-dimensional polar material.

Summary: We propose a method using sodium molybdate liquid alloys to control atomic defects at grain boundaries of monolayer MoS2. The Mo-rich environment in the alloys leads to the formation of Mo-polar 5|7 defects with a yield exceeding 95%. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of VLS-grown polycrystalline MoS(2) films is enhanced due to the suppression of nonradiative recombination of charged excitons with donor-type defects of adsorbed Na elements.

Summary: In this study, a method to achieve outstanding thermal stability of converse piezoelectric constant in lead-free potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based ceramics is proposed. The relationship between grain size and polar configuration is demonstrated, and improved thermal stability in fine grains is suggested. The thermal stability is realized in a device by successfully demonstrating the temperature dependence of piezoelectricity, making it possible to apply the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics as piezoelectric devices with high thermal stability.

Summary: When foreign cations are doped into ABO(3)-type perovskite oxides, they usually replace A or B sites depending on their ionic size. This study uncovers the presence of indium dopants occupying square-planar interstices and charge-compensating Ba vacancies at grain boundaries in polycrystalline BaTiO3. This chemical heterogeneity inhibits grain-boundary migration and enables the attainment of fine-grain microstructures with unprecedented dielectric properties.
