In this study hydraulic oil-based ferrofluid was synthesized and the impacts of different parameters including temperature, particle concentration and magnetic field were studied on rheological properties. Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared through a co-precipitation technique using ammonium hydroxide as a precipitator and oleic acid as surfactant and its features were studied using XRD and SEM. The outcomes indicated that with increasing concentration of nanoparticles, the kinematic viscosity of the oil is increased and the activity of the ferrofluid was changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian and the ferrofluid showed a dilatant behavior. The ferrofluid viscosity containing 0.7 wt% nanoparticles is enhanced in the existence of a 30 mT magnetic field than its viscosity in the absence of the field 14%.
