Summary: Pre-Olympic predictions often include an increase in population-based physical activity, while the post-Olympic effects on physical activity remain largely unsummarized. Most pre-Olympic documents set targets for population physical activity or sports participation; however, analysis of surveillance data shows little change in physical activity prevalence in most cases. Google Trends data demonstrates a sharp increase in searches related to the Olympics during the event, and sustained growth in searches related to exercise throughout the Olympic period.

Summary: This study examined racial disparities in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) incidence between African American (AA) and White women, and found that AA women had significantly higher population attributable risks (PAR) for first-degree family history of breast cancer and multiple modifiable risk factors compared to White women. The selected risk factors collectively accounted for slightly more of the risk among AA women, suggesting that interventions targeting modifiable risk factors may be more beneficial to AA women at risk for EOC.

Summary: EOC patients have low response rates to immunotherapies, but evidence suggests ovarian tumors are immunogenic and immune-related genomic profiles can serve as prognostic markers. Specific research areas that need to be addressed include developing immune-based prognostic signatures and driving advancements in this field.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether ovarian seromucinous carcinoma truly represented a distinct category of ovarian tumors or an analogue of ovarian endometrioid carcinoma. Through the analysis of clinicopathological features and prognosis of 12 patients, it was found that ovarian seromucinous carcinoma and ovarian endometrioid carcinoma had significant differences in clinical characteristics and prognosis, indicating that direct classification of ovarian seromucinous carcinoma as ovarian endometrioid carcinoma is not appropriate.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the proteomic profile of serum exosomes from epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients and identify potential diagnostic markers for EOC. The researchers found that serum exosomes from EOC patients contributed to the migration of EOC cells and the level of exosomal LRPI was significantly upregulated in EOC patients, serving as an important diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for EOC.

Summary: Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 49%. Standard treatment involves cytoreductive surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy, but platinum resistance is a major challenge. Identifying effective biomarkers and therapeutic targets is crucial for guiding therapy and improving patient outcomes.

One microRNA, miR-130a, was associated with serous histology and advanced FIGO stage, while seven other microRNAs were found to be significantly associated with clinicopathological characteristics but need further validation.

Summary: Recently, a study found a positive correlation between protein expression of FOXJ1 and the 5-year survival rate of patients with tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). However, protein expression of GMNN was not significantly associated with patient survival. This study provides preliminary evidence for the prognostic value of FOXJ1 in HGSC and validates the prior mRNA-based prognostic association through immunohistochemistry.

Summary: Surgery for epithelial ovarian cancer may activate stress-inflammatory responses that stimulate tumor growth. Observational studies have shown mixed results on the association between beta-blocker use and improved survival. This population-based study found that perioperative supply of nonselective beta-blockers conferred a survival advantage for women age over 50 years with a history of cardiovascular conditions.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the recurrence rate in patients with malignant oral disease undergoing immediate implant placement and microvascular free flap surgery, compare the timing of implant placement and the time to oral rehabilitation, and investigate the association between implant placement timing and tumor recurrence. The results showed a recurrence rate of 12.5% in patients with malignant oral cancer undergoing microvascular reconstruction, implants, and an oral prosthesis. Delayed implant placement significantly delayed the completion of oral rehabilitation compared to immediate implant placement, but there was no significant difference in the recurrence rate between the immediate and delayed implant groups.

Summary: The effect of body mass index (BMI) on esophageal and gastric carcinogenesis varies depending on subtype or subsite. In this study, a pooled analysis of 10 population-based cohort studies in Japan, we observed an inverse association between BMI and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, but a positive association with gastric cardia cancer. Additionally, a positive association was found for overweight or obese individuals with esophageal adenocarcinoma and gastric cardia cancer. The study highlights the subtype- or subsite-specific impact of BMI on upper gastrointestinal cancer in the Japanese population.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the proportions of newly diagnosed melanomas treated by different medical specialist types, describe the types of excisions performed, and investigate factors associated with treating practitioner specialty and excision type. The results showed that most melanomas were diagnosed in primary care, and nearly half of the cases were initially managed by partial excision (shave or punch biopsy). Second or third, wider excisions were undertaken in about 90% of cases.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between p53 expression status and survival in women with common ovarian carcinoma histotypes. Abnormal p53 expression was found to be associated with an increased risk of death in endometrioid carcinoma (EC) and clear cell carcinoma (CCC) patients. Furthermore, abnormal p53 expression was also associated with shorter overall survival in patients with EC and CCC.

Summary: Bio-and GenomeBank, Denmark (RBGB) is a national infrastructure that includes the Danish CancerBiobank (DCB). This study aimed to assess the collected biological material in DCB for patients with primary ovarian cancer registered in The Danish Gynecologic Cancer Database (DGCD) and investigate the concordance between predicted organ of disease and final diagnosis. Data from DGCD and DCB were extracted. 62% of the patients with primary ovarian cancer (1347 out of 2172) had biological materials stored in DCB. The median age of patients with biological material in DCB was 67 years, while it was 69 years for patients without biological material (p = 0.0001).

Summary: In this study, next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis was implemented in routine diagnostic work-up for B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL). Mutations were detected in 94% of samples, and 50% of unclassified cases could be assigned a likely diagnostic subtype based on mutational findings. This gene sequencing approach provides potential diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive value for classification and risk-stratification of B-NHL.

Summary: This study quantifies the differences in health care service use by people diagnosed with invasive melanoma in Queensland, Australia, based on their residential remoteness and socio-economic status. The analysis shows that there are minor variations in hospital admissions and specialist consultations, with public hospital admissions more frequent in areas of greater socio-economic disadvantage and outside major cities, while private hospital admissions and specialist consultations are more frequent in areas of lesser disadvantage and in major cities.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease with a low survival rate. Patient-derived 3D cultures have shown promise for personalized treatment, but most models do not include supportive tissue cells. In this study, a co-culture model was created using cells from endoscopic biopsies, showing interaction between tumor and stromal cells. The study also highlights the need to include cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in models, as CAFs impact treatment response.
