Long-term no-tillage and different residue amounts alter soil microbial community composition and increase the risk of maize root rot in northeast China

Conservation agriculture practices, such as no-tillage and crop residue retention, are proposed as sustainable soil management practices. However, it remains unclear how long-term no-tillage and residue retention affect microbial community composition and soil-borne plant pathogen abundances. This study investigated the impact of long-term (10 years) no-tillage with different mulching amounts (0%, 33%, 67% and 100% of 7.5 t/ha maize straw) on soil microbial community composition and abundances of two pathogenic fungi (Fusariurn graminearum and Pusan= monWonne) during the maize growing season in northeast China. We explored the changes of soil microbial community and pathogenic fungi abundance by Illumina MiSeq sequencing and quantitative PCR, respectively. No-tillage with residue retention significantly increased fungal richness but had little effect on bacterial diversity. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance showed that both tillage and sampling time had significant influences on fungal community structure, whereas the bacterial community structure was only affected by the sampling time, indicating that fungi were more sensitive than bacteria to tillage practices. Relative abundances of some fungal and bacterial genera changed significantly under no-tillage and residue treatments, with the greatest change found in the 33% mulching treatment. In addition, the quantitative PCR results showed that no-tillage with residue retention significantly increased F. graminearum and F. moniliforme abundances, suggesting that the risk of maize foot rot increased in the corn field. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the abundances of these two pathogenic fungi were associated with soil properties and some microbial genera. Furthermore, no-tillage with 33% and 100% mulching had the greatest effect on F. graminearum and F. moniliforme abundances. These findings can provide some guidance for tillage and residue management practices of maize cropping in northeast China.

The effect of different biocrusts on soil hydraulic properties in the Tengger Desert, China

Summary: Water redistribution has a profound impact on the function of dryland ecosystems. Biological soil crusts (BSCs or biocrusts), which cover a large portion of arid land soil surface, have conflicting effects on water redistribution at a regional scale. This study clarified the effects of different biocrusts on soil hydraulic properties in the Tengger Desert. The results showed that biocrusts significantly altered soil hydraulic properties, including water holding capacity, soil hydrophobicity, water sorptivity, and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Understanding the role of biocrusts in hydraulic properties can help improve our understanding of soil water distribution, movement, and retention in the area.

Association of soft drinks and 100% fruit juice consumption with risk of cancer: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 cohort studies, it was found that an increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of breast, colorectal, biliary tract, and prostate cancer. Increased consumption of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of leukemia. Increased consumption of 100% fruit juice per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of overall cancer, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and thyroid cancer. There were linear dose-response associations between SSBs consumption and breast and kidney cancer, and between ASBs and fruit juices consumption and pancreatic cancer.

A Meta-analysis of the Clinical Efficacy of the Head-of-Bed Elevation for Patients With Acquired Brain Injury

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of head-of-bed elevation on patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). The results showed that elevating the head of the bed by 30 degrees can significantly reduce intracranial pressure (ICP), but did not have statistical differences on cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and disability at 90 days. Therefore, head-of-bed elevation of 30 degrees may be an effective noninvasive nursing practice for the prognosis and rehabilitation of ABI patients.

Pilates and multiple health outcomes: An umbrella review

Summary: This study conducted an umbrella review to summarize the evidence of associations between Pilates and multiple health outcomes, and evaluated the strength and validity of these associations. It found that Pilates can reduce body mass index and body fat percentage, relieve pain and disability, and improve sleep quality and balance. However, the certainty of the evidence was mostly low, and further high quality randomized controlled trials are needed to support these promising findings.

Effectiveness of intraoperative peritoneal lavage with saline in patient with intra-abdominal infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The findings suggest that IOPL with saline does not significantly reduce the risk of mortality, intra-abdominal abscess, incisional surgical site infection, postoperative complication, reoperation, and readmission when compared to non-IOPL. Therefore, routine use of IOPL with saline in patients with IAIs is not supported.

Genome-Wide Identification and Evolution Analysis of the CYP76 Subfamily in Rice (Oryza sativa)

Summary: The CYP76 subfamily, which belongs to the CYP superfamily, is crucial for phytohormone biosynthesis and response to environmental stresses in plants. Genome-wide analysis of the CYP76 subfamily in seven AA genome species revealed three groups, with Group 1 having the largest number of members. Analysis of cis-acting elements showed a high number of elements related to jasmonic acid and light response. Gene duplication analysis indicated expansion mainly through SD/WGD and tandem forms, with strong purifying selection during evolution. Expression pattern analysis showed that OsCYP76s exhibit restricted expression patterns in leaves and roots. qRT-PCR analysis of CYP76s under abiotic stresses revealed specific response patterns and functional divergence between japonica and indica rice. These findings provide valuable insights into the functional diversity and evolution of the CYP76 subfamily and have implications for improving stress tolerance and agronomic traits in rice.

Impacts of long-term organic manure inputs on cultivated soils with various degradation degrees

Manure fertilization significantly improves soil functional index (ISI) and maize yield for degraded soils. Wind erosion after steppe conversion in Kazakhstan

Change in phosphorus availability, fractions, and adsorption-desorption by 46-years of long-term nutrient management in an Alfisol of eastern India

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of long-term nutrient management practices on P fractions and P adsorption-desorption behaviour of an acid soil with a soybean-wheat cropping system. The findings revealed that amorphous Fe and Al, which play a significant role in P fixation, increased due to cultivation. The NPK+Lime treatment offered the most balanced approach, improving both crop yield and P uptake while effectively managing P dynamics in the soil. On the contrary, long-term application of NPK+FYM in an acid soil may result in faster P saturation of adsorption sites and increase the chances of leaching and eutrophication. Tailored P fertilization strategies should be developed to better utilize the PFe and PAl fractions and supplementing applied P.

Impacts of the soil pore structure on infiltration characteristics at the profile scale in the red soil region

CT-based porosity and soil texture were considered crucial indicators in the evaluation of water exchange during infiltration processes.

Impact of drought on terrestrial ecosystem C-N-P stoichiometry and microbial nutrient limitation

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the effects of drought on terrestrial ecosystem C-N-P stoichiometry on a global scale. The results showed that drought significantly decreased the C:N ratio in soil, enzymes, shoots, and roots. Soil microbes were limited by N, whereas plants were restricted by P under drought stress. Drought intensity and duration were negatively correlated with shoot N:P and vector angle.

Loss and conservation of soil organic carbon and nutrients in arid and semiarid China during aeolian dust emissions

Summary: Based on the application of the integrated wind erosion modeling system, this study comprehensively simulated the loss and conservation of nutrients during aeolian dust emissions in the arid and semiarid areas of China. The results showed a decreasing trend in nutrient losses over the past two decades, with the ecosystems playing a crucial role in preventing these losses. The prevention rates of different land cover types were generally high, indicating the effectiveness of conservation measures.
