Benzophenone-3 (BP3 or oxybenzone) is an organic UV filter that has been widely used in personal care products. Its frequent detection in the environment and humans as well as its structural similarity to estradiol have prompted most research focus on its endocrine effect. However, these effects are usually associated with concentrations 10-100 fold higher than its environmental relevant concentrations. Few studies explore its adverse effects at environmental relevant concentrations. In the present study, we evaluated the developmental neurotoxic (DNT) effects of low concentration BP3 exposure during a sensitive developmental window in zebrafish. Our findings revealed that BP3 exposure at 10 mu g/L (0.04 mu M) during 6-24 h post fertilization (hpf) led to various DNT effects such as increased spontaneous movement at 21 and 24 hpf, decreased touch response at 27 hpf, heightened hyperactivity in locomotor response at 5 day post fertilization (dpf), decreased shoaling behavior at 11 dpf and decreased mirror attacks at 12 dpf. These effects were accompanied with decreased axonal growth at 27 hpf, decreased cell proliferation and increased cell apoptosis in the head region of larval zebrafish immediately after BP3 exposure at 24 hpf, and increased expression of retinoid X receptor gene rxrgb at 5 dpf. Interestingly, rxrgb knockdown through morpholino injection largely restored most of BP3-induced DNT effects, axonal growth delay, cell proliferation and cell apoptosis, suggesting that BP3-induced DNT effects are likely mediated through the Rxrgb receptor. In considering with recent findings on the endocrine effects of BP3, we conclude that BP3 at environmental relevant concentrations has limited estrogenic effect, but is neurotoxic to developing embryos in zebrafish. Assessment of Ti-6Al-4V particles as a reinforcement for AZ31 magnesium alloy-based composites to boost ductility incorporated through friction stir processing

Isaac Dinaharan, Shuai Zhang, Gaoqiang Chen, Qingyu Shi

Summary: Ti-6Al-4V particle reinforced AZ31 MMCs were produced through friction stir processing, resulting in improved ductility and deformation characteristics. The Ti-6Al-4V particles were uniformly distributed in the material with a strong interface. The composite exhibited refined grains and dense dislocations. The Ti-6Al-4V particles enhanced the tensile behavior and prevented brittle failure.

Flow-coupled thermo-mechanical analysis of frictional behaviors at the tool-workpiece interface during friction stir welding

Chengle Yang, Qilei Dai, Qingyu Shi, Chuansong Wu, Hua Zhang, Gaoqiang Chen

Summary: This study elucidates the friction behavior of AA2024-T4 during the FSW process through experimental investigation and numerical simulation. The temperature at the tool-workpiece interface is found to be heterogeneously distributed, with deformation heating contributing more to the heat generation than slipping friction. A significant slip occurs at the shoulder periphery and the middle of the pin end, while a large area of interfacial stick is presented. Fast mass transfer occurs within the highly-localized high-velocity zone (HVZ), while relatively slow mass transfer occurs outside the HVZ.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Sn-9Zn-2.5Bi-1.5In solder joints with aging treatment under various conditions

Shiliang Gong, Gaoqiang Chen, Songtao Qu, Xun Xu, Vichea Duk, Qingyu Shi, Gong Zhang

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Sn-Zn solder paste joints on Cu substrates with aging treatment, which are under various conditions of different paste thicknesses and reflow times. The results show that the intermetallic compounds (IMC) of Sn-Zn/Cu solder joints gradually thicken during aging, leading to the formation of interface voids and coarsened crystal structure, which are identified as the main factor for joint failure. The joints with the initial 3.5 μm thickness IMC layers exhibit high shear strength above 45 MPa, indicating satisfactory reliability.

Development of Computational Approach for Analyzing In-Process Thermal-Mechanical Condition during Friction Stir Welding for Prediction of Material Bonding Defect

Gaoqiang Chen, Huijie Liu, Qingyu Shi

Summary: This study proposes a computational methodology for predicting material bonding defects during friction stir welding (FSW) by evaluating the in-process thermal-mechanical condition. Several modeling methods are integrated to predict the defects, and the performance of the computational analysis is demonstrated using FSW of AA2024 as an example. It is found that the dynamic sticking (DS) model can predict the geometry of the rotating flow zone, and the butting interface tracking (BIT) analysis shows a significant orientation change that affects the bonding pressure. The interfacial temperature and pressure are analyzed for their roles in material bonding. Four bonding-quality indexes are tested to quantify the thermal-mechanical condition and determine the critical value for successful solid-state bonding (SSB).

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Aluminium bioaccumulation in colon cancer, impinging on epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and cell death

Rita Bonfiglio, Renata Sisto, Stefano Casciardi, Valeria Palumbo, Maria Paola Scioli, Erica Giacobbi, Francesca Servadei, Gerry Melino, Alessandro Mauriello, Manuel Scimeca

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
