Summary: In this study, the influence of loneliness and social adaptation on depressive symptoms and their neural mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that loneliness and social adaptation have negative and positive effects on depressive symptoms, and social adaptation reduces the impact of loneliness. Neural connectivity analysis revealed a common neural substrate for depressive symptoms, loneliness, and social adaptation. The discussion suggests that loneliness is a strong risk factor for depression, while social adaptation can mitigate its adverse effects.
