In many marine littoral and sublittoral benthic habitats, we find small diatoms with few features resolvable with light microscopy (LM) other than internal costae across their valves. While classically those internal costae have defined their identification and classification, the use of electron microscopy and of molecular data have started to reveal the true diversity of unrelated forms and genera (e.g., Anaulus, Eunotogramma, Hustedtiella, or Plagiogramma) which possess these structures. Here we describe the new genus Ambo, in an attempt to clarify some of the polyphyly of taxa with internal costa by formally transferring Anaulus balticus, Anaulus simonsenii, and Plagiogramma tenuissimum as well as Ambo gallaeciae, described here. Related to this, we attempt to document and characterize the genus Anaulus itself, which was formally described by Ehrenberg with an illustration. A search by LM of mica designated by Ehrenberg as the holotype of Anaulus scalaris, the generitype of Anaulus, failed to recover a specimen which adequately describes the genus to the exclusion of other genera with internal costa. We also present morphological and molecular data for Anaulus creticus and suggest a new genus-Ceratanaulus-to reflect the distinct morphological and molecular characters we documented.

Life History of the Diatom Schizostauron trachyderma: Cell Size and Lipid Accumulation

Ewa Gorecka, Przemyslaw Dabek, Nikolai Davidovich, Olga Davidovich, Rejean Tremblay, Claude Belzile, Romain Gastineau, Andrzej Witkowski

Summary: This study focuses on determining the mating type of Schizostauron trachyderma and examining the relationship between cell size, lipid droplet size, and lipid content among diatoms with similar cell dimensions. The results of the experiments indicate correlations between cell size, the number of neutral lipids per cell, and the size of lipid droplets.

Lipid Constituents of Diatoms (Halamphora) as Components for Production of Lipid Nanoparticles

Marta Marzec, Przemyslaw Dlbek, Andrzej Witkowski, Fernanda Monedeiro, Pawel Pomastowski, Boguslaw Buszewski, Izabela Nowak

Summary: In this study, lipid nanocarriers based on microalgae oil and lipids extracted from diatoms were successfully produced using the high shear homogenization method. The physicochemical parameters of the obtained lipid nanocarriers were optimized, and the samples with the best parameters were selected for further study. The lipid nanoparticles obtained had small size, low polydispersity index, and positive charge, which could facilitate electrostatic bonding with the negatively charged skin surface. Moreover, they exhibited good stability at room temperature.

A new species of Fogedia (Bacillariophyceae) from tidal flats of Northeast Asia

Hyesuk Kim, Jong Seong Khim, Andrzej Witkowski, Jinsoon Park

Summary: The genus Fogedia was established in 1997 and subsequently expanded to include a total of 13 species, with the description of a new species called Fogedia orientalis sp. nov. The morphological similarities and differences of the new species, as well as the global distribution of all 13 Fogedia species, have been provided.

Marine Achnanthales (Bacillariophyceae) from New Caledonia (Melanesia): assemblage specificities, ultramafic environment

Summary: This study investigated marine diatoms, particularly Cocconeidaceae, in the South Province of New Caledonia. The species diversity varied across different habitats, ranging from low diversity on mangrove mud flats to high diversity on the pneumatophores of Avicennia marina. Diatoms were scarce in macroalgae and in the feces of Acanthopleura gemmata. Interestingly, some taxa previously considered rare in Polynesia were found to be common in New Caledonia.

Photonic Nano-/Microstructured Diatom Based Biosilica in Metal Modification and Removal-A Review

Summary: The siliceous exoskeletal shells of diatoms, known as frustules, have attracted attention for their photoluminescence property and high volume to surface area ratio. They can enhance the plasmonic sensitivity of metal nanoparticles and have excellent adsorption and absorption capabilities, which have been utilized in wastewater treatment. By conjugating noble metals with diatom frustules, the metals become more stable and effective.

Cryptophytes: An emerging algal group in the rapidly changing Antarctic Peninsula marine environments

Carlos Rafael Borges Mendes, Raul Rodrigo Costa, Afonso Ferreira, Bruno Jesus, Virginia Maria Tavano, Tiago Segabinazzi Dotto, Miguel Costa Leal, Rodrigo Kerr, Carolina Antuarte Islabao, Andrea de Oliveira da Rocha Franco, Mauricio M. M. Mata, Carlos Alberto Eiras Garcia, Eduardo Resende Secchi

Summary: Based on a 11-year in-situ dataset, researchers found that cryptophytes are gradually replacing diatoms as the basis of the food web in the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Their study demonstrates a strong coupling between cryptophyte biomass accumulation, summer upper ocean stability, and mixed layer depth. These findings shed light on the importance of niche separation between diatoms and cryptophytes in understanding the WAP marine ecosystem.

Comparison between p-distance and single-locus species delimitation models for delineating reproductively tested strains of pennate diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) using cox1, rbcL and ITS

Summary: Several automated molecular methods were tested for their accuracy in identifying microalgal species, particularly diatoms. Models such as ABGD, ASAP, SPNA, and PTP performed well in identifying diatom species, while the GMYC model had the least agreement with previous identification data. These models can be useful tools for identifying cryptic or closely related diatom species with limited sequence data.

Nitzschia captiva sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta), the essential prey diatom of the kleptoplastic dinoflagellate Durinskia capensis, compared with N. agnita, N. kuetzingioides and other species

David G. Mann, Norico Yamada, John J. Bolton, Andrzej Witkowski, Rosa Trobajo

Summary: Durinskia capensis is a species of kleptoplastic dinoflagellate found in high intertidal marine rock pools. It relies on certain diatoms, particularly Nitzschia captiva, as its kleptoplastids for survival. Without a supply of these essential diatoms, D. capensis loses its kleptoplastids and dies. Nitzschia captiva differs morphologically from other Nitzschia species and is described as a new species.

Prey preference in a kleptoplastic dinoflagellate is linked to photosynthetic performance

Summary: Dinotoms, belonging to the family Kryptoperidiniaceae, have diatom-derived endosymbionts and go through three evolutionary stages. D. capensis is able to use various diatom species as kleptoplastids and exhibits different photosynthetic capacities depending on the diatom species. The ability of D. capensis to ingest supplemental diatoms as kleptoplastids may be a flexible strategy to use these diatoms as emergency supplies.
