Beneficial therapeutic effects of phenolic acids have been proven in various research projects including in vivo and in vitro studies. Gentisic acid (GA) is a phenolic acid that has been associated with useful effects on human health, such as antiinflammatory, antigenotoxic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, and especially antioxidant activities. It is an important metabolite of aspirin and also widely distributed in plants as a secondary plant product such as Gentiana spp., Citrus spp., Vitis vinifera, Pterocarpus santalinus, Helianthus tuberosus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Olea europaea, and Sesamum indicum and in fruits such as avocados, batoko plum, kiwi fruits, apple, bitter melon, black berries, pears, and some mushrooms. This study was undertaken to review the pharmacological effects, pharmacokinetic properties as well as toxicity and pharmaceutical applications of GA.

Crocin Protects Malathion-Induced Striatal Biochemical Deficits by Inhibiting Apoptosis and Increasing α-Synuclein in Rats' Striatum

Leila Mohammadzadeh, Mahboobeh Ghasemzadeh Rahbardar, Bibi Marjan Razavi, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: Long-term exposure to organophosphates, such as the pesticide malathion, can lead to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease. Crocin, a component of saffron, has been found to have anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study investigated the effects of crocin on the biochemical deficits induced by malathion in rat striatum tissue. The results showed that crocin could inhibit the toxic effects of malathion by its anti-apoptotic activity and regulation of proteins involved in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis.

Protective and therapeutic effects of Scutellaria baicalensis and its main active ingredients baicalin and baicalein against natural toxicities and physical hazards: a review of mechanisms

Ali Ahmadi, Zoha Mortazavi, Soghra Mehri, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: This paper provides a narrative review of the protective and antidotal effects of Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) and its main constituents against natural toxicities and physical hazards. The study found that treatment with baicalein (BE), baicalin (BA), or total SB extract can prevent or counteract the toxic effects of various natural compounds and physical hazards by increasing antioxidant enzyme expression and inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Crocin molecular signaling pathways at a glance: A comprehensive review

Motahareh Boozari, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: This paper provides an updated and comprehensive review of the molecular mechanisms of crocin, a hydrophilic carotenoid synthesized in the flowers of the Crocus genus. The biological and pharmacological properties of crocin, including its memory-enhancing, anxiolytic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, and neuroprotective effects, are discussed. Various studies have confirmed the significant impact of crocin on controlling pathological conditions such as oxidative stress, inflammation, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. The regulatory effects of crocin on multiple signaling pathways, particularly the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, play a crucial role in these effects.

The Therapeutic Role of Rho Kinase Inhibitor, Fasudil, on Pulmonary Hypertension; a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Farshad Abedi, Navid Omidkhoda, Omid Arasteh, Vahid Ghavami, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of fasudil in the management of pulmonary hypertension (PH) through human clinical trials. The results suggest that fasudil is effective and safe in improving some hemodynamic parameters in PH patients in the short and mid-term periods. However, more long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these benefits.

Protective effects of pomegranate (Punica granatum) and its main components against natural and chemical toxic agents: A comprehensive review

Azar Hosseini, Bibi Marjan Razavi, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: This study reviewed the protective effects of pomegranate against natural and chemical toxins. Pomegranate and its active components, such as ellagic acid and punicalagin, demonstrated protective effects against aflatoxins, endotoxins, arsenic, diazinon, and carbon tetrachloride. These effects were attributed to mechanisms such as antioxidant activity, reduction of inflammation, modulation of apoptosis, and improvement of liver or cardiac function. Despite the lack of clinical trials, these findings provide valuable insights for further research on the protective effects of pomegranate.

A review of how the saffron (Crocus sativus) petal and its main constituents interact with the Nrf2 and NF-κB signaling pathways

Mahboobeh Ghasemzadeh Rahbardar, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: Saffron petals, the primary by-product of saffron processing, contain various substances and have a range of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects. These properties, based on their compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides, contribute to saffron's antibacterial, antidepressant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and other therapeutic effects. This review discusses the mechanisms of action of saffron and its compounds, particularly their involvement in the Nrf2 and NF-kappa B signaling pathways.

Can nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) be repurposed for fungal infection?

Fatemeh Babaei, Mohammadreza Mirzababaei, Alireza Tavakkoli, Marjan Nassiri-Asl, Hossein Hosseinzadeh

Summary: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, pain, and fever. This review explores the antifungal effects of NSAIDs alone or in combination with antifungal drugs in vitro and in vivo. Studies have shown that NSAIDs have antifungal activities against various species of fungi, including inhibiting biofilm formation and yeast-to-hypha conversion. Modulating prostaglandin E2 levels during fungal infection may be a possible mechanism. The combination therapy of NSAIDs and antifungal drugs shows potential as a novel therapeutic strategy in clinical studies, reducing resistance and toxicity.
