Probing Axions with Event Horizon Telescope Polarimetric Measurements

With high spatial resolution, polarimetric imaging of a supermassive black hole, like M87(star) or Sgr A(star), by the Event Horizon Telescope can be used to probe the existence of ultralight bosonic particles, such as axions. Such particles can accumulate around a rotating black hole through the superradiance mechanism, forming an axion cloud. When linearly polarized photons are emitted from an accretion disk near the horizon, their position angles oscillate due to the birefringent effect when traveling through the axion background. In particular, the observations of supermassive black holes M87(star) (Sgr A(star)) can probe the dimensionless axion-photon coupling c = 2 pi g(a gamma)f(a) for axions with mass around O(10(-20)) eV [O(10(-17)) eV] and decay constant f(a) < O(10(16)) GeV, which is complimentary to other axion measurements.

Sun heated MeV-scale dark matter and the XENON1T electron recoil excess

Summary: The XENON1T collaboration reported an excess of low-energy electron recoil events and explored the possibility of explaining it with MeV-scale dark matter heated by the Sun. Different form factors of DM-electron interactions were studied and the inclusion of Sun-heated DM improved the fit to the data. Inferred DM-electron scattering cross sections were obtained and constraints for these form factors were derived, showing stronger results than previous studies.

Stringent axion constraints with Event Horizon Telescope polarimetric measurements of M87

Summary: The unprecedented angular resolution of the Event Horizon Telescope has opened up exciting opportunities in the search for new physics. Recent measurements of linear polarization of radiation emitted near the supermassive black hole M87* have allowed for tests of the existence of a dense axion cloud produced by a spinning black hole. By analyzing the azimuthal distribution of electric vector position angle, the researchers were able to study axion-photon coupling and derive stringent constraints on the existence of axions in a previously unexplored mass range of approximately (10(-21)-10(-20)) eV.

Birefringence tomography for axion cloud

Summary: This paper studies the influence of different black hole properties and accretion flows on the axion induced birefringence. The effects of black hole inclination angles, spins, magnetic fields, plasma velocity distributions, and the thickness of the accretion flows are included. The study pays special attention to the washout effects caused by the finite thickness of the accretion flows and the lensed photons. The prospects of optimizing the axion search using future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations are discussed, aiming to increase the sensitivity.

Photon Ring Astrometry for Superradiant Clouds

Summary: Gravitational atoms produced by the superradiant extraction of spinning black holes' rotational energy have higher energy densities than dark matter, making black holes potential detectors for ultralight bosons. These structures are formed by coherently oscillating bosons, which cause oscillations in the metric perturbations, deflecting the paths of photons passing through them. The deviation of nearby geodesics can be further amplified near critical bound photon orbits. We discuss the possibility of detecting this deflection using photon ring autocorrelations with the Event Horizon Telescope and its next-generation upgrade, which can explore a large unexplored region of the cloud mass parameter space compared to previous constraints.

Earth shielding and daily modulation from electrophilic boosted dark particles

Summary: This study investigates the daily modulation feature of a potential future signal caused by boosted dark particles of astrophysical origin in direct detection experiments. Specifically, simulations of the interactions between dark particles and electrons in atoms forming the Earth's path to the detector were conducted, and in-depth predictions for the expected daily changes in the signal were provided for various direct detection experiments, including XENONnT, PandaX, and LUX-ZEPLIN.

Superradiant evolution of the shadow and photon ring of Sgr A

Summary: Ultralight bosons can affect the dynamics of spinning black holes through superradiant instability, leading to time evolution of supermassive black hole shadows. We introduce two observables, shadow drift and azimuthal angle lapse variation, which are sensitive to shadow time evolution and complementary depending on the observer's inclination angle. For the supermassive object Sgr A*, we show that these observables can vary significantly over a few years and can be observed and used to probe ultralight bosons in the mass range of approximately 10-17 eV, with the help of the Event Horizon Telescope.

Dissecting axion and dark photon with a network of vector sensors

Axion haloscope array with PT symmetry

Summary: We generalize the PT-symmetric axion haloscope to a larger array with more PT-symmetric structures, significantly enhancing the optimized scan rate and signal power without increasing readout noise. The robustness of the detector towards variations in array coupling is maximized when a binary tree structure with enhanced PT symmetry is introduced. The scan rate can be further increased through the correlation of signals from multiple probing sensors. This type of array greatly boosts the search for axions, especially in detection using a superconducting radio-frequency cavity with an ac magnetic field.
