Summary: The epidemiology of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has changed over the past two decades, with the emergence of clinically relevant C. difficile strains causing severe nosocomial outbreaks. This study reports on an outbreak that occurred in a Long-term Care Unit, which was tracked using a Matrix-Assisted Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) typing approach (T-MALDI). The study also characterized the toxigenic and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the C. difficile isolates. The results showed the presence of three different clusters, with one cluster being considered epidemic and susceptible to vancomycin and metronidazole but resistant to moxifloxacin. This is the first reported outbreak associated with a tcdA+/tcdB-/cdt+ genotypic profile. T-MALDI is shown to be a valid and rapid approach for detecting and tracking outbreaks.

Summary: In this study, the identification of 230 filamentous fungi isolates using MALDI-TOF MS in combination with the Filamentous Fungi Library 3.0 was investigated. The results showed that using the more time-consuming sample preparation methods improved species-level identification rates, and the in-house threshold for species identification was validated for routine use in the laboratory. This suggests that this commercial platform is suitable for routine diagnosis.

Summary: To produce a deep green LED, the suitable indium composition in the InxGa1-xN/GaN multi-quantum well structure is crucial. The use of an indium-rich layer can suppress blue shifting, especially after the annealing process. Characterizations by XRD and TEM show that adding an indium capping layer narrows the MQW layer and suppresses blue shift of the photoluminescence.

Summary: In high-energy-density physics, doping tracer atoms and deuteration of target materials are crucial for diagnosis in inertial fusion energy using high-power lasers. However, achieving Cu doping, deuterated polymer, mechanical toughness, and chemical robustness simultaneously during the fabrication process is challenging. In this study, we successfully fabricated a Cu-doped deuterated target and characterized it using various techniques. Simultaneous measurements of Cu K-shell x-ray emission and beam fusion neutrons were demonstrated using a petawatt laser at Osaka University.

Summary: Polyacrylic acid complexed with polyaniline (PAA/PANI) composite materials have the potential to form organic mixed ion-electron conductive (OMIEC) films, which can be used in optoelectronic and energy storage applications. The composite films are formed through an acid-base reaction, resulting in strong electrostatic interactions and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between PANI and PAA. The separation of PANI-rich domains from PAA-rich matrix in the composite films is observed. The electrical conductivity of the composite films is higher when the content of PANI is 33 wt%, due to the high ionic-electronic coupling at the interface between phase-separated regions.
