Many brain areas modulate their activity during vibrotactile tasks. The activity from these areas may code the stimulus parameters, stimulus perception, or perceptual reports. Here, we discuss findings obtained in behaving monkeys aimed to understand these processes. In brief, neurons from the somatosensory thalamus and primary somatosensory cortex (S1) only code the stimulus parameters during the stimulation periods. In contrast, areas downstream of S1 code the stimulus parameters during not only the task components but also perception. Surprisingly, the midbrain dopamine system is an actor not considered before in perception. We discuss the evidence that it codes the subjective magnitude of a sensory percept. The findings reviewed here may help us to understand where and how sensation transforms into perception in the brain.

Invariant timescale hierarchy across the cortical somatosensory network

Roman Rossi-Pool, Antonio Zainos, Manuel Alvarez, Sergio Parra, Jeronimo Zizumbo, Ranulfo Romo

Summary: The ability of cortical networks to integrate information from different sources is essential for cognitive processes. Different cortical areas may require different time-scales depending on their functional role, and this time scale hierarchy remains invariant across different task contexts.

A continuum of invariant sensory and behavioral-context perceptual coding in secondary somatosensory cortex

Roman Rossi-Pool, Antonio Zainos, Manuel Alvarez, Gabriel Diaz-deLeon, Ranulfo Romo

Summary: The study reveals that in the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2), neurons exhibit both invariant sensory responses and perceptual behavior correlated responses. The majority of neurons fall along a continuum of combined sensory and categorical dynamics, showing task context-dependent processing mechanisms. Despite task demands, sensory representations remain unaltered in S2 neurons.

Summary: This study investigates the activity of dopamine neurons in monkeys performing a discrimination task, and finds that dopamine could be involved in reward prediction errors, motivation, and working memory.

Hierarchical unimodal processing within the primary somatosensory cortex during a bimodal detection task

Summary: This study investigates the processing of sensory information in the cortex and finds regional and functional differences. The results demonstrate that neurons in areas 3b and 1 of the primary somatosensory cortex primarily encode tactile modality and show variations in response properties. The study also reveals that neurons in area 3b carry more information about periodic stimulus structure and have faster response and coding latencies compared to neurons in area 1.

An abstract categorical decision code in dorsal premotor cortex

Gabriel Diaz-deLeon, Manuel Alvarez, Lucas Bayones, Antonio Zainos, Jeronimo Zizumbo, Sergio Parra, Sebastian Pujalte, Ranulfo Romo, Roman Rossi-Pool, Victor de Lafuente

Summary: This study proposes that the dorsal premotor cortex (DPC) plays a more active role in decision-making than previously thought. By recording neuronal activity in DPC during a vibrotactile categorization task, the study found that DPC neurons exhibited stable categorical responses throughout the task and maintained the same response patterns across different stimulus attributes. Dimensionality reduction analysis revealed strong temporal and categorical representations in DPC neurons without remnants of the stimuli's physical parameters. These findings suggest that DPC plays an important role in decision-making.
