Summary: Computed tomography (CT) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, staging, and assessment of therapy response in malignant pleural mesothelioma, but has limitations such as poor soft tissue contrast and lack of consideration for the tumor's complex growth pattern. Computer-based methods show potential in overcoming these limitations, while MRI may replace CT in various clinical settings due to its high soft tissue contrast.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the majority of primary liver cancer and a major global health challenge. Thermal ablation, including radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA), is recommended for early-stage HCC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a central role in evaluating treatment response and patient prognosis.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is the eighth most frequent cancer worldwide, with a poor prognosis. Current imaging modalities like CT and PET/CT are used for staging and follow-up. MRI, a non-irradiating and non-invasive technique, has shown potential in the staging and treatment assessment of EC, with improving diagnostic performance after technical refinements.

Summary: This study explored the predictive value of quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) parameters for the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) and the prognosis of locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) patients. The results showed that the combined model based on DCE-MRI and IVIM-DWI could help stratify the recurrence-free survival (RFS) of LAGC patients.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a common cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with surgical resection being the only radical treatment option. Lack of early diagnosis leads to treatment failure, hence advanced gastric cancer is usually treated with surgery combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Summary: This study demonstrated that imaging biomarkers can be used to predict long-term outcome in patients with synovial sarcomas. Strikingly, the presence of calcifications on CT scan is associated with favorable outcome and provides an incremental value over existing prognostic factors such as age, grade, and size.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical value of high resolution axial T2-weighted MRI as a noninvasive method for esophageal carcinoma tumor staging. The results showed that HR-T2WI had high diagnostic accuracy in evaluating tumor invasion and in MRI-T staging for esophageal carcinoma, and it could be used as a supplemental noninvasive method for the local T staging of esophageal carcinoma.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the utility of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) diffusion-weighted imaging in quantitatively analyzing preoperative tumor (T) and node (N) stages of gastric cancer. Significant correlations were found between IVIM parameters and different T and N stages of gastric cancer, with D value serving as the diagnostic threshold for serosal invasion and lymphatic metastasis.

Summary: This preliminary study aimed to develop a deep learning model using diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient maps to predict local recurrence and 2-year progression-free survival in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer patients. The results showed that using intra-treatment diffusion-weighted imaging for prediction had high accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristics curve. Intra-treatment diffusion-weighted imaging was found to be an independent prognostic factor for progression-free survival.

Summary: This study describes the experience in managing complications following laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer. The results show that among the patients who underwent reintervention, 34.3% required conversion to open surgery. The findings also indicate that recovery outcomes were significantly better for patients who completed the reoperation through laparoscopy.

Summary: This study developed and validated a novel index (SPI) to support the strengthening of local elective surgical systems and address growing backlogs. The findings showed that hospitals with a higher SPI were associated with an increased planned surgical volume ratio, independent of income status, COVID-19 burden, and hospital type. Annual self-assessment of surgical preparedness is recommended to identify areas for improvement and enhance the resilience of local surgical systems.

Summary: Although ERAS programs have been widely adopted for colorectal surgery, their implementation for upper gastrointestinal surgery is challenging in Italy. A survey showed that Italian centers dedicated to gastric cancer do not fully follow evidence-based practices and guidelines of ERAS for gastric surgery. This may be due to surgeons' hesitation to introduce radical changes to traditional postoperative management after gastrectomy.

Summary: This qualitative study investigated the decision-making process of surgeons regarding protective ileostomy creation after rectal cancer surgery. The results showed that 76% of surgeons supported the creation of ileostomy. When making the decision, 88% of surgeons considered risk factors. Emotions influenced the decision-making process in 22% of cases, and personal experiences influenced it in 49% of cases. The most frequently considered risk factors were the distance between the anus and the tumor (96%), neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (88%), positive intraoperative leak test (65%), blood loss (37%), and immunosuppression therapy (35%).

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of Self-Expandable Metal Stents (SEMS) and Endoscopic Vacuum Therapy (EVT) in the treatment of anastomotic leaks after esophagectomy/gastrectomy, with a focus on oncologic surgery. The results showed that EVT was more effective and had fewer complications compared to SEMS. However, in the oncologic surgery subgroup, there was no significant difference in the success rate between the two treatments.

Summary: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is a severe malignancy with increasing incidence, poorly understood pathogenesis, and low survival rates. TP53 gene alterations, especially missense mutations, negatively affect cancer-specific survival in EAC. HNF1alpha gene disruption is associated with other gene alterations and is identified as a new EAC-mutated gene.
