Lipophilic extractives in the dichloromethane extract from Eucalyptus pellita wood and bark were identified by GC-MS. Of the various morphological parts, the bark samples contain more extractives than wood samples. The largest extractive content was measured in the bark of the top part. Four groups (i.e., free fatty acids, sterols-steroids, triterpenoids, and other compounds) were detected in all parts. Palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids as well as beta-sitosterol dominated among of the lipophilic extractives. Long chain fatty acids were the major lipophilic groups in heartwood. Sterols-steroids were the major components in the bottom and top part of the bark. Conversely, triterpenoids and short chain-fatty acids were the minor components in bottom and top part of the bark. Very long-chain fatty acids (i.e., docosanoic, lignoceric, and hexacosanoic) were also observed. The concentration of certain lipophilic constituents, e.g., stigmast-4-en-3-one, squalene, glycerol, oleic, linoleic, hexacosanoic, and beta-sitosterol, was affected by position within the tree in axial and radial directions. The higher concentration of long chain fatty acids in the heartwood as well as sterols-steroids in the bark seems to be clearly disadvantage as far as pitch formation is concerned.

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA KING BARK EXTRACTS

Masendra, Brandon Aristo Verick Purba, Ganis Lukmandaru

Summary: This study found significant differences in antioxidant activity between the outer and inner bark of Swietenia macrophylla, with the outer bark showing higher levels of total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as stronger antioxidant activity. GC-MS analysis revealed varying compositions of fatty acids, alcohols, and phenolic compounds in the inner and outer bark. A strong correlation was demonstrated between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity.

Differences in the egumi taste of moso-bamboo shoots: research using chemical analysis and two types of taste sensors

Yuka Furusawa, Hitoshi Nakamura, Tatsuya Ashitani

Summary: The research aimed to determine if the egumi taste of moso-bamboo shoots varied by production area, using chemical analysis and taste sensors. It was found that oxalic acid may be the main component responsible for the egumi taste, with variations in taste noted depending on the origin of the bamboo shoots.

Antitermitic and antifungal properties of enantiopure linalool and furanoid linalool oxide confirmed in Lindera umbellata var. membranacea

Manami Satoh, Norihisa Kusumoto, Naoyuki Matsui, Rei Makino, Koh Hashida, Daisuke Arai, Yoshiaki Iiduka, Tatsuya Ashitani

Summary: In this study, the antitermitic and antifungal activities of linalool and linalool oxide were evaluated, showing different effectiveness against Reticulitermes speratus and fungi. The results indicated that the stereostructures of linalool oxides played a significant role in their activities, with (2R,5R)-trans-linalool oxide exhibiting the strongest antitermitic activity. Additionally, (S)-linalool showed significantly stronger antifungal activity compared to racemic and (R)-linalool.

EXTRACTIVE CONTENTS OF THE JUVENILE STEMWOOD AND BARK OF TEAK

Fais Rahman, Ganis Lukmandaru

Summary: This study focused on the descriptive analysis of extractive content in different parts of teak wood, including stem, bark, branch, and twig. Results indicated that 8-year-old trees had higher methanol extractive content compared to 6-year-old trees, while the branch and twig parts showed higher concentrations of extractive content. Additionally, phenolic concentrations were found to be higher in the branch and twig parts compared to the main stem.

Analysis of sugar components related to heartwood formation in young Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq trees

Rizki Arisandi, Sri Nugroho Marsoem, Ganis Lukmandaru, Johanes Pramana Gentur Sutapa

Summary: This study aims to investigate the sugar components that are important for heartwood formation in young Swietania mahagoni. After 4-5 years of heartwood formation, the content of monosaccharides and alditols doubled, while the content of major monosaccharides and sucrose decreased from sapwood to heartwood. Sucrose, represented as the main sugar, played a key role in heartwood formation.

The effectiveness of a biopesticide in the reduction of coffee berry borers in coffee plants

Sophie Manson, Marco Campera, Katherine Hedger, Nabil Ahmad, Esther Adinda, Vincent Nijman, Budiadi Budiadi, Muhammad Ali Imron, Ganis Lukmandaru, K. A. I. Nekaris

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of a biopesticide on the presence of coffee berry borer in small-holder coffee home gardens in West Java, Indonesia. The results showed that the presence of the pest significantly decreased, with a negative relationship between distance to natural forest and pest presence, and a positive relationship between shade cover and pest presence. Furthermore, farmers perceived the biopesticide to be more effective than conventional pesticides, highlighting its potential.

Effect of different seed sources on the physical and mechanical properties of 15-year-old teak trees planted in West Java, Indonesia

Fanny Hidayati, Ganis Lukmandaru, Tomy Listyanto, Denny Irawati, Rini Pujiarti, Sugi Purwanta

Summary: This study investigates the wood properties of superior teak in Indonesia, specifically focusing on older trees. The research finds that the superior clone of teak has lower heartwood percentage, brighter and lower redness color of wood, lower basic density, and lower mechanical properties compared to other seed sources. However, there are no significant differences in physical properties, MOR, and MOE among seed sources. Only compressive strength shows a significant difference. Additionally, the study shows that air-dry density can be used to predict the mechanical properties of teak wood.

Heartwood formation and its relationship with basic density and green moisture content of young small-leaf mahogany trees

Rizki Arisandi, Sri Nugroho Marsoem, Johanes Pramana Gentur Sutapa, Ganis Lukmandaru

Summary: This study investigated the time and age at which heartwood formation begins in Swietenia mahogani trees, as well as the influence of age and diameter on heartwood formation. Results showed that heartwood formation starts at the age of four and can be found in up to 65% of the tree height. The analysis revealed that heartwood proportion is primarily determined by diameter rather than age, suggesting that selecting trees with larger diameters in tree breeding programs can produce high-quality wood.
