Two series of aminoguanidines containing an alkynyl moiety were designed, synthesised, and screened for antibacterial and anticancer activities. Generally, the series 3a-3j with a 1,2-diphenylethyne exhibited better antibacterial activity than the other series (6a-6k) holding 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne moiety antibacterial activity. Most compounds in series 3a-3j showed potent growth inhibition against the tested bacterial strains, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range 0.25-8 mu g/mL. Compound 3g demonstrated rapid and persistent bactericidal activity at 2 x MIC. The resistance study revealed that resistance of the tested bacteria towards 3g is not easily developed. Molecular docking studies revealed that compounds 3g and 6e bind strongly to the LpxC and FabH enzymes. Moreover, excellent activity of selected compounds against the growth of cancer cell lines A549 and SGC7901 was also observed, with IC50 values in the range 0.30-4.57 mu g/mL. These findings indicate that compounds containing the aminoguanidine moiety are promising candidates for the development of new antibacterial and anticancer agents.

Anaerobic co-digestion of leachate and glycerol for renewable energy generation

Paula Yumi Takeda, Jackeline Tatiane Gotardo, Simone Damasceno Gomes

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of anaerobic co-digestion of landfill leachate and crude glycerol, and found that the association of these substrates led to high organic matter removal efficiency and specific biogas production. Optimization through Central Composite Rotational Design and the modified Gompertz model improved the digestion conditions and significantly increased specific biogas production.

Summary: A risk prediction system combining FIT and risk factors was developed to improve the sensitivity of colonoscopy screening. The system effectively stratified participants into high risk and low risk groups, with better predictive ability for colorectal neoplasia compared to using FIT alone.

Summary: RF thawing is more efficient than air thawing and has positive effects on the color, texture, and quality of meat. Compared with air thawing, RF thawing results in less thawing loss, lower TVB-N content, and lower TVC. It also reduces myofibrillar protein content and causes less damage to the microstructure.

Summary: Atomically dispersed metal catalysts can maximize metal utilization and provide unique chemical properties. Self-pillared nanosheet-supported metal catalysts, such as PtZn/SP-S-1, exhibit high stability and specific activity, with no obvious deactivation after 90 hours at high temperature. They have potential to guide high-temperature catalysis.

Design, Synthesis, and Pharmacology of New Triazole-Containing Quinolinones as CNS Active Agents

Wennan Zhao, Mingxia Song, Yi Hua, Yangnv Zhu, Wenli Liu, Qishan Xia, Xianqing Deng, Yushan Huang

Summary: This study designed, synthesized, and investigated a series of new triazole-quinolinone compounds as CNS active agents. These compounds significantly reduced immobility time in the forced swim test in mice and showed superior antidepressant activity compared to fluoxetine. Compound 3g demonstrated antidepressant activity through an activity reversal test and almost all compounds showed antiseizure activity in the maximal electroshock seizure model. Further experiments confirmed that compound 3g affected GABA concentration in mice brain and had good interaction with the amino acid residue of the GABA(A) receptor. These findings provide a new skeleton for developing drugs for the treatment of epilepsy and depression comorbidities.

Antiseizure Properties of Histamine H3 Receptor Antagonists Belonging 3,4-Dihydroquinolin-2(1H)-Ones

Yi Hua, Mingxia Song, Qiaoyue Guo, Yiqin Luo, Xianqing Deng, Yushan Huang

Summary: This study synthesized a series of 6-aminoalkoxy-3,4-dihydroquinolin-2(1H)-ones to screen their H3R antagonistic activities and antiseizure effects. The majority of the compounds displayed potent H3R antagonistic activity, with compounds 2a, 2c, 2h, and 4a showing submicromolar activity. Three compounds (2h, 4a, and 4b) were found to have antiseizure activity in the maximal electroshock seizure model. However, none of the compounds were able to resist seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). Compound 4a's antiseizure role was believed to be achieved through antagonizing the H3R receptor. Molecular docking studies predicted that compounds 2h, 4a, and PIT had similar binding patterns with H3R.
