Decomposition of pharmaceutical micropollutant - diclofenac by photocatalytic nanopowder mixtures in aqueous media: effect of optimization parameters, identification of intermediates and economic considerations

This study evaluates application of three different nanopowder mixtures for decomposition of diclofenac (DCF), one of frequently detected pharmaceutical in wastewater. Analyzed three photocatalytic mixtures ZnO/SnO2, ZnO/TiO2 and ZnO/In2O3 are for the first time used for diclofenac degradation. A set of experiments were performed in order to investigate influence of catalyst concentration (0.10-0.60 mg mL(-1)), initial concentration of diclofenac (0.002-0.010 mg mL(-1)) and pH value (5-9). The increase in the catalyst concentration leads to a decrease in the degradation rate constant, which is the most pronounced in the ZnO/TiO2 and ranges from 0.47 (6) min(-1) to 0.25 (3) min(-1). The influence of pH on efficacy shows completely different effects: ZnO/In2O3 is most effective in alkaline environments, ZnO/TiO2 in neutral environments, while ZnO/SnO2 efficiency is good in both alkaline and acidic environments. Initial concentrations of diclofenac showed a complex effect on the degradation rate. The four dominant intermediates were detected by LC MS/MS technique. In case of all three nanomaterials, intensive degradation was achieved in first 30 minutes. The economical analysis of photocatalytic treatment was provided where the preparation of nanomaterials does not demand high costs and with the highest diclofenac concentration, total operation costs are the lowest (77.14 US$/kWh).

Occurrence of bisphenol A and microplastics in landfill leachate: lessons from South East Europe

Summary: The investigation of landfills in Southeast Europe revealed the presence of microplastics in different sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as detectable levels of BPA in landfill leachate samples. The average concentration values of microplastics ranged from 0.64 to 2.16 mg L-1, while the average concentration of BPA in leachate samples ranged from 0.70 to 2.72 mg L-1, showing a correlation with the content of microplastics.

Exposure to hazmat road accidents - Toxic release simulation and GIS-based assessment method

Summary: Industrial demand has led to increased production and transport of hazardous materials, resulting in frequent accidents that pose risks to vulnerable populations. This study focused on assessing the impact of hazmat road accidents on people with disabilities to inform disaster preparedness procedures. By conducting a case study on ammonia release and proposing a risk assessment methodology, the study highlighted the importance of environmental and human-induced variables in determining hazard magnitude.

Modernized sensor measurement technique for determination of chlorine in bathing water Sensor for chlorine determination in bathing water

Summary: A colorimetric fiber optic sensor was developed for determination of total and residual chlorine in water. The sensor detects values in the red, green, blue color space and converts them into a user-oriented hue, saturation, value color model. The repeatability and effectiveness of the sensor method for chlorine measurement in water were validated by comparing the results with standard chemical laboratory analysis. The sensor method showed potential for replacing expensive laboratory equipment due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, small size, and repeatability.

Groundwater quality assessment of protected aquatic eco-systems in cross-border areas of Serbia and Croatia

Summary: Research results show that agricultural activities have a significant impact on groundwater quality in wetland ecosystems in Serbia and Croatia, mainly due to the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers. Correct application of some commonly used methods in the analysis of thermally induced processes in glass materials

Summary: This paper points out the incorrect use of the linear least squares regression method in articles about the thermal characteristics of glass. Microplastics in municipal solid waste landfills

Summary: In recent years, landfill sites have been identified as the major sources of microplastics (MPs). A literature review was conducted to understand the current status of experimental research activities related to MPs in landfill compartments, aiming to provide data on MPs concentration levels and polymer types in landfill leachate, terrestrial landfill environment, and air. Possible future research directions were proposed for adequate monitoring of MPs in landfill sites.

Energy Potential Assessment of Excavated Landfill Material: A Case Study of the Perm Region, Russia

Summary: This paper presents the thermal characteristics of excavated landfill waste in Perm region, Russia. The waste composition, climatic conditions, and lack of engineering infrastructure at the waste disposal facility are the key factors examined. The study suggests removing contaminants from the landfill waste fraction during composition and thermal property determination to avoid overestimation. The results show that sorting and drying are necessary for landfill waste to be considered as a resource for secondary fuel production.

Isoconversional Model of Kinetics of Thermally Induced Processes in Chalcogenide Glass Sb37S48I15

Summary: In this paper, isoconversional modeling and analysis of the kinetics of thermally induced processes for Sb37S48I15 chalcogenide glass were conducted. Different methods were used to analyze the change in activation energy with the extent of conversion for glass transition, crystallization, and melting, revealing various dynamic behaviors during these processes.

ADSORPTION OF LINURON AND ISOPROTURON PESTICIDES ON COMMERCIAL ACTIVATED CARBON, NORIT SA2

Summary: This study investigated the use of commercial activated carbon NORIT SA2 for the removal of linuron and isoproturon pesticides from aqueous solutions. Results showed that the activated carbon was effective in adsorbing the pesticides, especially at room temperature. Kinetic modeling indicated that the pseudo-second order model was the best fit for the adsorption process.
