Summary: Water-based damping coatings with both low-frequency damping and high-frequency impact protection have been developed by synthesizing a series of latexes containing a styrene-butyl acrylate chemical crosslinking framework and a dynamic crosslinking impact hardening polymer. A composite film (BSL-IHP) prepared by using long-chain-based lauryl methacrylate as an additive exhibits excellent low-frequency damping ability and high-frequency impact resistance. The BSL-IHP film shows a loss factor (tan8) of 1.54 and an effective damping temperature range up to 80 degrees C, while its impact energy absorption efficiency reaches 76.8% under high-speed impact, providing a wide range of applications in the future.

Summary: A latex-based biocoating was optimized for VOC removal using activated sludge dominated by Patescibacteria. Different components in the mixture affected the removal efficiency differently, with toluene and pinene showing higher removal rates. High water content was beneficial for biocoating performance, while VOC mass-transfer was the main limiting factor for the latex-based biocoating.

Summary: The traditional latex used for oil-well cementing can cause serious foaming issues in the cement slurry, affecting the accurate measurement of the density and cementing construction. The foam stabilizer used for latex preparation is mainly responsible for the foaming. In this study, soap-free emulsion polymerization was conducted to produce a latex with good filtration loss control, freeze-thaw stability, and low foaming, which is beneficial for on-site cementing construction.

Summary: Dispersion coating is an alternative to extrusion coating for coated paper packaging. In this study, two styrene-butadiene-based dispersion coatings filled with different amounts of kaolin were rod-coated on two paper substrates. The kaolin-containing formulations showed good moisture and grease barrier properties, with the best formulation involving 20% kaolin by weight. Compared to commercial coatings, the kaolin-filled coatings greatly improved grease barrier while achieving similar moisture barrier.

Summary: Since alkyd resins contain hazardous solvents, it is important to convert them into waterborne hybrid polymers. In this study, alkyd/styrene acrylic waterborne hybrid polymers were synthesized using synthesized alkyd resins and different biosources. The synthesized latexes and their films were analyzed, and it was found that the type and concentration of the alkyds affected various properties. Experiments on waterborne paint systems showed that the alkyd content did not affect the paint color, indicating that hybrid waterborne latexes could be used for exterior paints.

Summary: A novel aqueous coating based on Diels-Alder (DA) chemistry is developed, which combines optical transparency, self-healing ability, and water-reducibility. The thermal reversibility of the polymer network is achieved through a DA reaction between furan and maleimide moieties. The adoption of an aliphatic bismaleimide as a crosslinker enables great transparency and absence of color in the thermally responsive coating. Furthermore, the carboxyl moiety in the coating enables dispersion in water after neutralization, resulting in a water-reducible coating system with added functionalities.

Summary: Omniphobic coatings were prepared on flat surfaces using a spray application technique with a functional acrylic polymer and micron sized inorganic particles. This coating consists of a blend of acrylic polysiloxane polymer, liquid epoxy resin as primer base coat, and a mixture of organosilanes and inorganic microparticles applied by spray. The resulting surface has high liquid repellency with contact angles of 150 degrees for water and 142 degrees for diiodomethane, and can be used for various applications.

Summary: A combination of statistical and triblock copolymer properties is explored to produce stable aqueous polymer dispersions suitable for film formation. Through the synthesis of a series of triblock copolymers and controlling the hydrophilicity of the stabilizer block, the structural characteristics of the copolymers in dissolved, dispersed, and solid states were investigated. Small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy revealed different morphologies of the copolymers in solvent and water, which were closely related to the mechanical properties of the cast films.

Summary: This study successfully improved the dispersibility, compatibility, and anticorrosive properties of waterborne polyacrylic/graphene composite coatings by preparing micron-sized sulfonated reduced graphene oxide (SRGO) sheets and introducing them in situ during emulsion polymerization. The application of a low dosage of SRGO dramatically enhanced the anticorrosive performance of the composite coatings, indicating the potential for accelerated industrial applications of micron-sized graphene sheets in polyacrylic-based anticorrosion coatings.

Summary: Isoprene-glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymers were prepared by reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) techniques in one-pot emulsion polymerization as precursors of polar/functional polyolefins. The NMP-synthesized copolymers showed better hydrogenation performance compared to RAFT-synthesized copolymers. The strategy used in this study to obtain polar/functional polyolefins is promising and relatively easy to scale-up.

Summary: There is a need for sustainable materials to replace fossil-origin ones. Myrcene (Myr), a biobased terpene-type monomer, shows potential as a substitute for diene monomers in elastomer production. The copolymerization of Myr with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) results in alternating copolymers with varying molecular weights and dispersities. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the presence of GMA in the copolymer.
