Summary: Alcohol abuse can be a presenting symptom of dementia, especially in the case of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. Late-onset alcohol abuse may indicate an underlying neurodegenerative process. The results of this study should be interpreted with caution.

Summary: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is often misdiagnosed as a cause of emotional and behavioral problems, leading to inappropriate emotional responses and maladaptive behaviors. In early stages, bvFTD may manifest as new onset sex offenses, such as indecent exposure and sexually inappropriate comments. It is important to consider the presence of bvFTD in forensic examinations and conduct thorough diagnostic evaluation for risk assessments and management.

Summary: A study found no significant difference in caregiver burden between younger-onset Alzheimer's disease and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. This could be due to similarities in patient behavior, motivation, and self-care between the two subtypes. Clinicians should screen for caregiver burden and associated factors, such as behavioral symptoms, in younger-onset dementia syndromes.

Summary: This study describes the first randomized clinical trial of a histone deacetylase inhibitor in FTD patients with GRN gene variations. The results showed that FRM-0334 was safe and well tolerated, but did not significantly affect plasma progranulin levels or other pharmacodynamic measures.

Summary: The study found that in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), earlier age at diagnosis is associated with more severe behavioral symptoms, while later age at diagnosis is associated with more severe memory impairment. However, surprisingly, mortality risk was not associated with age at diagnosis.

Summary: This study demonstrates promising potential for F-18-MK-6240 PET tracer in detecting tau in genetic frontotemporal dementia, with significant binding in P301L and R406W MAPT mutation subjects and no non-specific binding observed. The results suggest that a positive F-18-MK-6240 tau-PET does not necessarily indicate Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and may have applications in tauopathies beyond Alzheimer's.

Summary: Anosognosia levels were not significantly different between early-onset dementia (EOD) and late-onset dementia (LOD) patients, but increased with disease progression, especially in frontotemporal dementia cases. Early anosognosia was associated with higher frequency and severity of subsequent neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Summary: A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment can contribute to distinguishing between fvAD-dementia and bvFTD. The study found that fvAD patients showed higher impairment in attention and visuo-spatial functions, indicating additional right hemisphere dysfunction, which may be useful in clinical practice.

Summary: Patients with bvFTD and BD can be easily confused, sharing some features while having a complex relationship with an increased risk of developing FTD in those with BD. Apathy, disinhibition, and depression may coexist with dementia in the elderly, highlighting the overlap and uniqueness of clinical, genetic, and neuroimaging features between the two disorders.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed medical records of 28 patients diagnosed with probable bvFTD in a public psychiatric hospital in Cali, Colombia. The majority of patients were initially misdiagnosed with a primary psychiatric condition, with a gender difference in psychiatric diagnosis but not in neuropsychiatric symptoms. These results emphasize the importance of improving bvFTD diagnosis in under-represented populations.

Summary: The transition from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to plasma provides new avenues for studying molecular phenotypes of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study evaluated a panel of AD biomarkers in matched CSF and plasma samples, comparing their diagnostic performance and evaluating their trajectories along the AD progression. The findings suggest that a standardized panel of selected plasma markers can facilitate early AD diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression.

Summary: This study identified apathy, disinhibition, and psychosis as the behavioral features most strongly associated with caregiver burden in patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration spectrum disorders. These findings highlight the importance of early education for caregivers on managing the behavioral symptoms of these disorders. Interventions targeting these specific behaviors may be most effective in reducing caregiver burden.

Summary: This study investigates the diagnostic instability in a neuropsychiatric cohort over a long period of time. It finds that distinguishing late-onset frontal lobe dementia from late-onset primary psychiatric disorders remains challenging, and clinical hallmarks play a role in the diagnostic instability.
