The efficiency of the proteolytic strain Anoxybacillus kamchatkensis M1V in the fermentation of speckled shrimp by-product was investigated for the recovery of a deproteinized bioactive hydrolysate. The biological activities of the resulting hydrolysate were also examined by applying several antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory assays. The strain M1V was found to produce high level of protease activity (2000 U/mL) when grown in media containing only shrimp powder at 25 g/L. The crude protease displayed a significant deproteinization capabiliy, with the best efficiency (48%) being recorded for an enzyme to substrate (E/S) ratio of 30 U/mg. Following the deproteinization, chitin was recovered and the authenticity was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. On the other hand, the obtained hydrolysate showed a significant enzymatic inhibitory potential against acetylcholinesterase, tyrosinase, amylase, and angiotensin I convertase, and a strong antioxidant activity.

Khelifa Bouacem, Fawzi Allala, Nadia Zarai Jaouadi, Sondes Hamdi, Sondes Mechri, Kahina Ighilahriz, Hatem Rekik, Hocine Hacene, Amel Bouanane-Darenfed, Bassem Jaouadi

Summary: A novel extracellular lignin peroxidase (LiP PR40) was produced by a white-rot Agaricomycetes fungus strain newly isolated from dead deciduous trees in Algeria. This purified enzyme showed premium activity at pH 3 and 80 degrees C, and exhibited higher catalytic efficiency and dye-decolorisation aptitude compared to commercial horseradish peroxidase and reported LiP BA45. These properties make LiP PR40 a potential candidate for destaining synthetic dyes and lignin biodegradation.

An ecotoxicological approach for assessing marine pollution: Comparative study of multi-responses of marine mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna perna, exposed to pollutant heavy metals (copper and lead)

Sidali Kourdali, Kamel Boudjema, Abdellah Meknachi, Nabila Bounakous, Bassem Jaouadi, Sondes Mechri, Abdelmalek Badis

Summary: The present research aims to evaluate the variation of several responses in marine mussels exposed to different sub-lethal concentrations of copper and lead. The results showed that temperature and salinity variations were not significant enough to interfere with the effect of the pollutants. Changes in nitrogen and phosphorus mineral matter were found to be a physiological disturbance in both species. During the contamination cycles, catalase induction and protein depletion reflected the oxidative stress caused by the metals. However, the catalase activity returned to normal state during the decontamination cycles.

Summary: A novel extracellular lipase P22 from Penicillium crustosum Thom was isolated and characterized. The specific activities of P22 lipase were found to be 5000 and 10,000 U/mg on olive oil and trioctanoin emulsions, respectively. It exhibited clear regioselectivity toward the sn-1 position of surface-coated triglycerides and showed high activity and stability in the presence of water-immiscible organic solvents, surfactants, and oxidizing agents. It also showed compatibility with commercial laundry detergents and effectively removed oil stains.
