Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) are common chemical additives in expanded polystyrene foam (EPS). To evaluate the bioaccumulation potential of endogenous HBCDDs in EPS microparticles by earthworms, two ecologically different species of earthworms (Eisenia fetida and Metaphire guillelmi) were exposed to soil added with EPS microparticles of different particle sizes (EPS2000. 830-2000 mu m and EPS830, <830 mu m). To clarify the accumulation mechanisms, leaching experiments using EPS microparticles in different solutions were conducted. After exposure to EPS microparticles-amended soils (S-EPS) for 28 d, the total concentrations of HBCDDs reached 307-371 ng g(-1) dw in E. fetida and 90-133 ng g(-1) dw in M. guillelmi, which were higher than those in earthworms exposed to the soil that was artificially contaminated with a similar level of HBCDDs directly (ACS). The accumulation of HBCDDs in earthworms was significantly influenced by EPS microparticles' size and earthworms' species. The total concentrations of HBCDDs in earthworms' cast were significantly higher than the theoretical concentration of HBCDDs in S-EPS, which suggested that EPS microparticles can be ingested by earthworms. The release rate of HBCDDs from EPS5000 (2000-5000 mu m) into water-based solutions (<1%) after a 3.5-h incubation was far lower than that into earthworm digestive fluid (7%). These results illustrated that the ingestion of EPS microparticles and consequent solubilization of HBCDDs by digestive fluid play an important role in the accumulation of HBCDDs contained in EPS microparticles in earthworms. After a 28-d incubation with the soil solution, 4.9% of the HBCDDs was accumulatively leached from the EPS5000. which indicated that HBCDDs can be released from EPS microparticles to soil environment, and then accumulated by earthworms. Moreover, similar to those exposed to ACS, the diastereoisomer- and enantiomer-specific accumulation of HBCDDs in earthworms occurred when exposed to S-EPS. This study provides more evidence for the risk of microplastics to the soil ecosystem. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cuiping Ning, Yuan Gao, Haijun Zhang, Lei Wang, Haoran Yu, Lili Zou, Rong Cao, Jiping Chen

Summary: In this study, FT-ICR MS was used to identify the molecular compositions of water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in atmospheric particulate matter. The results showed that the molecular composition of WSOM varies with seasons and atmospheric conditions, with a higher correlation with temperature and O3 concentration. The concentrations of SO42- and NO3- were positively correlated with the abundance of sulfur-containing compounds. MS/MS analysis confirmed the presence of organic sulfates and nitrooxy-organosulfates in WSOM.

Excretion characteristics of nylon microplastics and absorption risk of nanoplastics in rats

Chu Peng, Ning He, Yinghong Wu, Yuan Lu, Hongwen Sun, Lei Wang

Summary: The ingestion of environmental microplastics poses potential health risks to animals, with the excretion dynamics playing a crucial role. While the excretion of microplastics in invertebrates and fishes has been studied, there is a lack of information on mammalian excretion, especially for fibrous microplastics. This study examines the excretion behavior of ingested nylon microplastics in rats and reveals that smaller microplastics are excreted more slowly than larger ones. Additionally, some nanoplastics can pass through the gut barrier and enter the bloodstream, highlighting the need for further attention to the health risks associated with ingested microplastics, particularly nanoparticles.

Oxidative potential of heavy-metal contaminated soil reflects its ecological risk on earthworm

Chunmei Ran, Chunguang Liu, Chu Peng, Xinxin Li, Yu Liu, Ye Li, Wenjun Zhang, Hongming Cai, Lei Wang

Summary: The oxidative stress on terrestrial animals caused by heavy metal-contaminated soil was evaluated using oxidative potential (OP), which was found to be influenced mostly by water extractable Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the soil. The study also showed that oxidative stress in earthworms can be reflected through biomarkers and is negatively correlated with the OP of soils. Metabolomic analysis further confirmed the correlation between four ROS-related metabolites in earthworms and OP values, suggesting that OP can serve as an indicator for ecological risk assessment of heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.
