Brain degeneration in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) results from the accumulation of pathological amyloid-beta (A beta) plaques and tau protein tangles, leading to altered plasma levels of biomarkers. However, few studies have investigated the association between plasma biomarkers and cognitive impairment in patients with AD. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated correlations between mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores and levels of plasma biomarkers in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and AD. Thirteen individuals with normal cognition, 40 patients with aMCI, and 37 patients with AD were enrolled. Immunomagnetic reduction was used to assess the levels of plasma biomarkers, including amyloid A beta(1-40), A beta(1-42), total tau protein (t-Tau), and phosphorylated tau protein (threonine 181, p-Tau181). Our analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between MMSE and both measures of tau, and a trend toward negative correlation between MMSE and A beta(1-42). In a longitudinal study involving three patients with aMCI and two patients with AD, we observed strong negative correlations (r < -0.8) between changes in MMSE scores and plasma levels of t-Tau. Our results suggest that plasma levels of t-Tau and p-Tau181 can be used to assess the severity of cognitive impairment in patients with AD. Furthermore, the results of our preliminary longitudinal study suggest that levels of t-Tau can be used to monitor the progression of cognitive decline in patients with aMCI/AD.

Risk of parental major psychiatric disorders in patients with comorbid autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A population-based family-link study

Tien-Wei Hsu, Ya-Mei Bai, Shih-Jen Tsai, Tzeng-Ji Chen, Chih-Sung Liang, Mu-Hong Chen

Summary: Few studies have investigated the parental risk of major psychiatric disorders among patients with comorbid autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This study found that the parents of patients with autism spectrum disorder-only had a different incidence of major psychiatric disorders compared to the parents of patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-only and dual-diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between a history of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and the subsequent risk of major affective disorders. The results showed that women with PMDD had a higher risk of developing unipolar depression and bipolar disorder compared to those without PMDD.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, finding no evidence of an association between isotretinoin use and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore, isotretinoin should not be withheld due to unnecessary concerns for the development of IBD.

Summary: There is growing evidence that COVID-19 is associated with increased risks of psychiatric sequelae, including depression, anxiety, cognitive impairments, sleep disturbance, and fatigue. This review provides timely updates on clinical research findings and identifies potential key targets for developing effective treatment strategies for long COVID. Additionally, the Formosa Long COVID Multicenter Study (FOCuS) applies the inflammation theory to the pathogenesis and treatment of post-COVID depression and anxiety.

All-cause mortality and suicide mortality in autistic individuals: An entire population longitudinal study in Taiwan

Shih-Jen Tsai, Wen-Han Chang, Chih-Ming Cheng, Chih-Sung Liang, Ya-Mei Bai, Ju-Wei Hsu, Kai-Lin Huang, Tung-Ping Su, Tzeng-Ji Chen, Mu-Hong Chen

Summary: Evidence suggests that autistic individuals have increased risks of mortality, including natural-cause, suicide, and accident mortalities. A study conducted in Taiwan found that autistic individuals had higher likelihoods of all-cause mortality, natural-cause mortality, and suicide mortality compared with non-autistic individuals. Autistic males were more likely to die by suicide, and autistic females were more likely to die of accident compared with non-autistic individuals.

Berne Ting, Daniel Tzu-Li Chen, Wei-Ti Hsu, Chih-Sung Liang, Ikbal Andrian Malau, Wei-Chih Li, Sheau-Ling Lee, Li Jingling, Kuan-Pin Su

Summary: Music interventions have been widely used to relieve anxiety in dementia patients, and a limited meta-analysis with randomized controlled trials was conducted. The results showed that music interventions significantly reduced anxiety symptoms, especially for Alzheimer's disease and mixed-type dementia. Significant improvements in agitation and depression in dementia were also observed. Several psychological mechanisms related to music interventions were comprehensively reviewed.
