This study aimed to systematically review previous studies on the reliability and concurrent validity of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). A systematic literature search was conducted (n = 26) using the online EBSCOHost databases, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to September 2019. A previously developed coding sheet was used to collect the data. The Modified Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies was employed to assess risk of bias and study quality. It was found that GPAQ was primarily revalidated in adult populations in Asian and European countries. The sample size ranged from 43 to 2657 with a wide age range (i.e., 15-79 years old). Different populations yielded inconsistent results concerning the reliability and validity of the GPAQ. Short term (i.e., one- to two-week interval) and long-term (i.e., two- to three-month apart) test-retest reliability was good to very good. The concurrent validity using accelerometers, pedometers, and physical activity (PA) log was poor to fair. The GPAQ data and accelerometer/pedometer/PA log data were not compared using the same measurements in some validation studies. Studies with more rigorous research designs are needed before any conclusions concerning the concurrent validity of GPAQ can be reached.

Influence of Volume and Bouts of Sedentary Time and Physical Activity on School-Aged Youth's Physical Fitness: The UP & DOWN Longitudinal Study

Alberto Grao-Cruces, Alejandro Perez-Bey, Jose Jimenez-Iglesias, Carolina Cruz-Leon, Veronica Cabanas-Sanchez, Oscar L. Veiga, Jose Castro-Pinero

Summary: This study examined the associations between total volume and bouts of sedentary time (ST) and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with physical fitness (PF) in youth. The results showed that total ST was negatively associated with PF, but this association was not independent of MVPA. On the other hand, total volume of MVPA showed a positive association with PF independently of ST and weight status. These findings highlight the importance of accumulating minutes of MVPA, regardless of the bout duration, to increase PF levels in youth.

A qualitative examination on the preparation of preservice physical education teachers for assessment in secondary teaching methods courses in the US

Mike Hodges, Xiaolu Liu, Xiaofen D. Hamilton, Brooke Doherty, Ashley Phelps, Jeffrey Colburn, Robert Knipe

Summary: This study explored how physical education teacher education (PETE) prepares preservice physical education teachers (PPETs) to select and implement appropriate assessments. Data collected from semi-structured interviews revealed two major themes: 'Scratching the surface of assessment with unclear learning objectives' and 'Perceiving the importance of assessment, but still not integrating it into instruction'. The findings suggest that assessment is not adequately taught in PETE programs and there is a need for improved preparation of PPETs in this area.

Longitudinal reallocations of time between 24-h movement behaviours and their associations with inflammation in children and adolescents: the UP&DOWN study

Victor Segura-Jimenez, Zeljko Pedisic, Ales Gaba, Dorothea Dumuid, Timothy Olds, Nikola Stefelova, Karel Hron, Sonia Gomez-Martinez, Ascension Marcos, Jose Castro-Pinero

Summary: The aim of the study was to explore the associations between longitudinal reallocations of time between different movement behaviours and changes in inflammatory markers in children and adolescents. The results showed that reallocating time from sedentary behaviour to sleep was associated with increases in C3 levels, reallocating time from light physical activity to sleep was associated with increases in C3 levels, reallocating time from light physical activity to other time-use components was associated with increases in C4 levels, and any reallocation of time away from moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was associated with unfavourable changes in leptin levels.

The Roles of Perceived Physical Education Competence, Enjoyment, and Persistence on Middle School Students' Physical Activity Engagement

Jianmin Guan, Ping Xiang, William M. Land, Xiaofen D. Hamilton

Summary: This study examined gender and grade differences in the impact of perceived competence and enjoyment of physical education on the frequency of students' physical activity persistence. The findings showed that girls had lower levels of perceived competence and enjoyment compared to boys, regardless of grade level. While both perceived competence and PE enjoyment were directly and positively related to persistence, they did not have indirect effects on physical activity frequency through persistence. These findings highlight the importance for physical educators to consider gender differences in perceived competence and PE enjoyment, as well as their role in enhancing students' participation in physical activity.

Objective measured physical activity and metabolic syndrome score in children and adolescents: The UP&DOWN longitudinal study

Alejandro Sanchez-Delgado, Sandra Sanchez-Parente, David Martinez-Gomez, Sonia Gomez-Martinez, Oscar L. L. Veiga, Ascension Marcos, Jose Castro-Pinero, Alejandro Perez-Bey

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity (PA) levels and patterns with metabolic syndrome score (MetS) in children and adolescents. The results showed that vigorous PA, moderate-vigorous PA, number of bouts per day in 10 min (N10), and total time in bouts per day in 10 min (T10) were negatively associated with MetS in male children and adolescents at cross-sectional level. Longitudinally, total time in bouts per day in 20 min in male children, and vigorous PA and N10 in female children were also negatively associated with MetS. Therefore, choosing shorter bouts of PA duration would be advisable for future studies in the pediatric population.
