Summary: This study investigated the abundance, distribution, and composition of microplastics in agricultural soils with and without long-term plastic film mulching in northern China. The results showed that plastic film mulching significantly contributed to microplastics in soils, with a higher abundance in mulched soils compared to non-mulched soils. The study confirmed that long-term plastic film mulching increases microplastics pollution in agricultural soils, highlighting the need for further evaluation of ecological risks associated with microplastics in soil ecosystems.

Summary: The rhizosphere microbiota plays a critical role in plant health and growth, particularly in saline-alkali soil. Plastic film mulching is an important method to improve crop yield in such soil. This study found that mulching plastic films on saline-alkali soil can promote the growth of soybeans, with significant changes in soil properties and rhizosphere microbial communities.

Summary: Planting under plastic-film mulches in arid-cold regions can save water and warm the soil. The plastic-film-side seeding (PSS) technology increased maize yield and plant number compared to traditional methods. PSS also improved soil conditions, grain yield, and water use efficiency, and had economic and environmental benefits.

Summary: Plastic mulched agricultural fields in Xinjiang are potential hotspots of microplastic (MP) contamination in China, and the abundance of MPs in this region is still unclear. Conventional methods for measuring soil organic carbon (SOC) generally do not separate the MPs from soils, overestimating the soil carbon (C) sequestration. This study collected 77 agricultural soil samples in Xinjiang and evaluated the average abundance of agricultural MPs and the contribution of microplastic-carbon (MP-C) to the SOC pool.

Summary: The use of plastic film mulching in agriculture has various effects on soil carbon dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions, with different impacts observed in different agricultural systems. Overall, the practice can significantly increase crop yield, but may also lead to changes in methane and nitrous oxide emissions.

Summary: Plastic film mulching has a positive effect on crop yield and water use efficiency, but its effects are complex and influenced by various factors. Coupled models can enhance understanding of the impact of plastic film mulching on water, heat, nitrogen dynamics, and crop growth, and can be used for applicability assessment in specific farmland.

Summary: Mulching practices can improve soil hydrothermal conditions and affect soil respiration. Straw mulching and plastic film mulching have different effects on soil respiration and heterotrophic respiration. Straw mulching decreases yield, while plastic film mulching increases yield. Mulching practices also have great potential for soil carbon sequestration.

Summary: The study showed that both whole plastic-film mulching (PFM) and straw strips mulching (SSM) techniques can increase the contribution rate of precipitation to evapotranspiration, reduce soil water consumption, and ultimately improve water productivity and yield of winter wheat. Despite being slightly less effective than PFM, SSM may have greater potential considering its friendly sustainability.

Summary: Plastic film mulching is widely used to improve crop water productivity, but it can potentially harm soil health due to the presence of residue plastic film mixed into the soil. Long-term plastic film mulching increases soil aggregate stability, decreases soil pH, and affects enzymatic activities. Biodegradable film can be a promising alternative to improve soil health.

Summary: This study investigates the influences of different mulch materials on drip-irrigated crop yield. The results show that transparent film and black film significantly increase crop yield, while straw mulching has no significant effect. The increase in yield is attributed to improvements in field microenvironment, photosynthetic capacity, and higher leaf area index (LAI).
