Summary: The study found that ketogenic diets did not significantly affect oral periodontal parameters in healthy participants, but did lead to significant weight loss. Fat mass and BMI were significantly positively correlated with periodontal inflammation, while HDL, fiber, and protein intake were negatively correlated with periodontal inflammation.

Summary: This study found that the use of interdental brushes and dental floss had a significant effect on preventing periodontitis in participants with 20 or more remaining teeth. No significant difference was observed in participants with fewer than 20 teeth. Subgroup analysis also revealed a significant preventive effect of interdental brushes on women with 20 or more remaining teeth.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that poor oral hygiene is associated with systemic diseases, including asthma. Medications, hypoxia induced by asthma, and the breathing behavior of patients may trigger periodontal disease, while oral periodontopathogenic microorganisms and inflammatory mediators may contribute to the onset and/or exacerbation of asthma. Common factors such as smoking, gastroesophageal reflux, and type-2 inflammation should also be considered when studying the relationship between the two diseases.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of probiotics as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that probiotics improved periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, and bleeding on probing parameters, but had no significant effect on the index plaque parameter.

Summary: The National Child Odontology Registry in Denmark has collected data on the oral health of Danish children and adolescents since 1972. This study provides an overview of the registry's history and the changes in registration criteria for dental variables over time. It also highlights the prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis following changes in registration criteria and suggests the need for further research in reporting accuracy. It concludes that the registry offers a unique opportunity for studying childhood oral health but recommends consulting with experts for the best use of the available data.

Summary: The study found that in Shandong province, the oral health status of adolescents is more severe in terms of dental caries than gingivitis. Brushing behavior is associated with gingivitis, while dental visits and toothaches are associated with caries. Therefore, prevention-oriented dental visits and oral hygiene training are strongly recommended to improve oral health status.

Summary: Steroid hormones and the oral microbiota of pregnant women are both important risk factors for gingivitis. This study investigated the composition and diversity of the microbiota in the interdental spaces of 3 months pregnant women and found that certain bacteria were associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease. Preventive measures should be implemented in pregnant women to reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Summary: Based on the results of the 2015 oral health survey in Spain, the prevalence of untreated dental caries in temporary and permanent dentition in children aged 6-12 years is high. The survey conducted in Madrid, Spain, showed that a significant number of children require fluoride applications, indicating the need for preventive public health projects to address tooth decay.

Summary: Periodontal disease affects a large portion of adults and can lead to systemic disorders. Control options primarily focus on removing plaque and calculus, but altering host inflammatory response and reducing bacterial triggers are also important. Vaccines may provide a potent adjunct to mechanical debridement for prevention and treatment, but the complexity of periodontal disease complicates vaccine development. Recent advances in mucosal vaccination may help bridge this gap.

Summary: Oral microbiomes vary in cariogenic potential and the transmission of cariogenic bacteria from mothers to their children is a major concern. Research found that breastfed children had lower relative abundances of certain bacteria in saliva, and children of mothers with dental issues had greater abundances of certain bacteria. By 12 months, children's microbiomes were more similar to other children than to their mothers.

Summary: Nigeria raised over $560.52 million to combat COVID-19, with more than 90% coming from the private sector and donors. However, the funds are primarily being used for temporary measures, rather than long-term health system strengthening. The stigma and slow testing process lead many individuals to seek care outside of designated COVID-19 healthcare facilities.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the use of oral rehydration therapy and early childhood caries (ECC) in children in Ife Central Local Government Area, Nigeria. The study found that using oral rehydration solution for diarrhea management was not significantly associated with the prevalence and severity of ECC. Therefore, the study suggests that oral rehydration therapy may not be a risk factor for ECC in communities with low ECC prevalence and high gastroenteritis prevalence.

Summary: The study in Nigeria found that HIV positive status and bullying victimization may increase the risk of experiencing all forms of intimate partner violence (IPV), while sexual identity and disability did not impact the experience of violence. The associations between age, sex, marital status, and IPV suggest potential moderating roles of these factors within the cultural context. Further relational analysis is needed to fully understand the pathways linking these variables.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between psychosocial factors and memory complaints during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was extracted from a global mental health study conducted between June and December 2020. The findings showed that social isolation, emotional distress, and history of SARS-CoV-19 infection were associated with higher odds of memory complaints, while social and financial support were associated with lower odds of memory complaints. The study highlights the importance of promoting access to support and reducing social isolation and distress during pandemics.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the perceptions of scientific researchers on gender inequality inside Nigerian research institutions. Data was collected through semi-structured telephone interviews with 54 researchers, and the analysis revealed the dominance of males in research institutions, changing narratives on gender equalities, and the role of women in driving change. The findings suggest that more efforts are needed to establish a supportive environment for female medical and dental researchers in Nigeria.

Summary: This international multicentre study aims to determine the association between molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) and other developmental anomalies in different populations. A total of 584 children with MIH and 584 children without MIH will be recruited for clinical and radiographic examinations to assess the presence and severity of MIH and other dental anomalies. Statistical analysis will be performed to determine the differences in dental anomaly prevalence between the MIH and non-MIH group and the association between dental anomalies and patient characteristics.

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of survivors of sexual harassment in Southwestern Nigeria's first-generation higher-education institutions. Through in-depth interviews with 12 participants, the study identified four broad themes: experience of sexual harassment, reporting patterns, coping strategies, and the physical and emotional impact of sexual harassment. Most survivors experienced sexual harassment multiple times, with same-sex harassment being common in higher-education institutions. Survivors did not report to university authorities due to a perceived lack of support, but instead sought support from their networks or mental health care professionals. The study emphasized the importance of improving the environment, promoting prompt reporting, and providing access to support for mental health problems.
