Background There are conflicting opinions about the contribution of malocclusions to the development of dental caries and periodontal disease. This study's aim was to determine the association between specific malocclusion traits, caries, oral hygiene and periodontal health for children 6 to 12 years old. Methods The study was a household survey. The presence of malocclusion traits was assessed in 495 participants. The caries status and severity were assessed with the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft/DMFT) index and the pulpal involvement, ulceration, fistula and abscess (pufa/PUFA) index. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) and Gingival Index (GI) were used to assess periodontal health. The association between malocclusion traits, the presence of caries, poor oral hygiene, and poor gingival health were determined with chi square and logistic regression analyses. Statistical significance was inferred at p < 0.05. Results Seventy-four (14.9%) study participants had caries, with mean (SD) dmft/DMFT scores of 0.27 (0.82) and 0.07 (0.39), respectively, and mean (SD) pufa/PUFA index scores of 0.09 (0.43) and 0.02 (0.20), respectively. The mean (SD) OHI-S score was 1.56 (0.74) and mean (SD) GI score was 0.90 (0.43). Dental Aesthetic Index scores ranged from 13 to 48 with a mean (SD) score of 20.7 (4.57). Significantly greater proportions of participants with crowding (p = 0.026) and buccal crossbite (p = 0.009) had caries. Significantly more children with increased overjet (p = 0.003) and anterior open bite (p = 0.008) had moderate to severe gingivitis. Poor oral hygiene (OR: 1.83; CI: 1.05-3.18 p = 0.033), crowding (OR: 1.97; CI: 1.01-3.49; p = 0.021) and buccal crossbite (OR: 6.57; CI: 1.51-28.51 p = 0.012) significantly increased the odds of having caries. Poor oral hygiene (p < 0.001), increased overjet (p = 0.003), and anterior open bite (p = 0.014) were the only significant traits associated with gingivitis. Conclusions Crowding and buccal cross bite were associated with caries, whereas increased overjet and anterior open bite were associated with gingivitis. These findings justify the recommendation of orthodontic treatment to improve oral health.

Nigeria's financing of health care during the COVID-19 pandemic: Challenges and recommendations

Bolaji S. Aregbeshola, Morenike O. Folayan

Summary: Nigeria raised over $560.52 million to combat COVID-19, with more than 90% coming from the private sector and donors. However, the funds are primarily being used for temporary measures, rather than long-term health system strengthening. The stigma and slow testing process lead many individuals to seek care outside of designated COVID-19 healthcare facilities.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the use of oral rehydration therapy and early childhood caries (ECC) in children in Ife Central Local Government Area, Nigeria. The study found that using oral rehydration solution for diarrhea management was not significantly associated with the prevalence and severity of ECC. Therefore, the study suggests that oral rehydration therapy may not be a risk factor for ECC in communities with low ECC prevalence and high gastroenteritis prevalence.

Associations between sexual identity, living with disability, bully victimisation, and HIV status and intimate partner violence among residents in Nigeria

Summary: The study in Nigeria found that HIV positive status and bullying victimization may increase the risk of experiencing all forms of intimate partner violence (IPV), while sexual identity and disability did not impact the experience of violence. The associations between age, sex, marital status, and IPV suggest potential moderating roles of these factors within the cultural context. Further relational analysis is needed to fully understand the pathways linking these variables.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the correlates of unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion among sexually active female street-involved adolescents in two urban cities in Nigeria. The findings showed that a large proportion of these adolescents were sexually active and experienced unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Access to contraception and education should be prioritized to address this issue.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between psychosocial factors and memory complaints during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was extracted from a global mental health study conducted between June and December 2020. The findings showed that social isolation, emotional distress, and history of SARS-CoV-19 infection were associated with higher odds of memory complaints, while social and financial support were associated with lower odds of memory complaints. The study highlights the importance of promoting access to support and reducing social isolation and distress during pandemics.

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of survivors of sexual harassment in Southwestern Nigeria's first-generation higher-education institutions. Through in-depth interviews with 12 participants, the study identified four broad themes: experience of sexual harassment, reporting patterns, coping strategies, and the physical and emotional impact of sexual harassment. Most survivors experienced sexual harassment multiple times, with same-sex harassment being common in higher-education institutions. Survivors did not report to university authorities due to a perceived lack of support, but instead sought support from their networks or mental health care professionals. The study emphasized the importance of improving the environment, promoting prompt reporting, and providing access to support for mental health problems.
