The effect of foliar application of polyamines on roses (Rosa hybrida cv. 'Herbert Stevens') was investigated in a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with three replications in a greenhouse. Two factors were applied including polyamine type (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) and polyamine concentration (0, 1, 2 and 4 mM). The recorded traits included root fresh and dry weight, root length, number of flowers, flower longevity, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, antioxidant enzymes activity (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and guaiacol peroxidase) and some macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The results showed that among polyamines, putrescine had the greatest effect on root dry weight; spermidine showed the greatest effect on root length, chlorophyll content, plant phosphorus and spermine affected root fresh weight and flower longevity most strongly. Polyamine concentration of 1 mM had the strongest effect on flower longevity, carotenoids, nitrogen and phosphorus content. The highest potassium rate was observed in treatments with the concentration of 4 mM. Polyamine treatments had no significant effect on the number of flowers per plant and antioxidant enzymes.

Foliar application of sodium nitroprusside and salicylic acid alleviates the adverse effects of alkaline soil on roses

Summary: The study investigated the effects of exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and salicylic acid (SA) on growth characteristics and physiological parameters in Rosa hybrida 'Beverly Watson' under alkalinity conditions. Results showed that 2 mM SA increased antioxidant enzyme activity, while 0.5, 1, and 2 mM SNP had positive effects. Both SNP and SA increased growth characteristics and decreased alkaline stress by activating certain enzymes. Additionally, their combination showed synergistic effects in certain parameters, indicating a potential new protective mechanism against oxidative stress.

Summary: The study developed linear regression models for remote sensing of soil nutrients in rain-fed agricultural lands in the northwest of Iran. Results showed linear relationships between soil nutrient contents and PC1, with the highest accuracy observed for TN. However, the accuracy of LR models for other soil nutrient contents was relatively lower, indicating the need for new technologies to improve soil nutrient prediction accuracy.

Induced Expression of Six ZIP Genes by Zinc Deficiency is Associated with Increased Uptake and Root to Shoot Translocation of Zn in Zn-efficient Bread Wheat Cultivars

M. Niazkhani, B. Abdollahi Mandoulakani, M. Jafari, M. H. Rasouli-Sadaghiani

Summary: The greenhouse experiment investigated the expression levels of six ZIP genes in roots and leaves of bread wheat cultivars under soil Zn deficiency conditions, revealing significantly higher expression of some ZIP genes in Zn-efficient cultivars compared to Zn-inefficient cultivars. Additionally, the relative expression levels of certain ZIP genes were significantly higher in the reproductive stage than in the vegetative stage. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between the expression of certain ZIP genes in leaves and both root and leaf Zn contents under Zn deficiency conditions, suggesting the potential use of ZIP genes for biofortification of bread wheat cultivars.

Effect of Postharvest Treatment with 24-Epibrassinolide and Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Essential Oil on Quality Attributes and Storage Life of Orange (Citrus sinensis cv. 'Valencia')

Hossein Rashidi, Jafar Amiri, Habib Shirzad

Summary: The effects of 24-epibrassinolide and fennel essential oil on the postharvest life and quality of orange fruits were investigated. The highest total acidity was observed in fruits treated with 600 mu lL(-1) essential oil and 4 mu lL(-1) 24-epibrassinolide at 45 days. The highest level of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase was found in fruits treated with 300 mu lL(-1) essential oil and 4 mu lL(-1) 24-epibrassinolide at 90 days. The combination treatment of 24-epibrassinolide and fennel essential oil improved the health promoting potential, maintained fruit quality, and extended storage life.

Summary: This study successfully improved nitrogen use efficiency by using a new zinc-incorporated urea slow-release fertilizer. In soil, this slow-release fertilizer can better retain ammonium nitrogen, promoting crop growth and reducing zinc loss. In pot experiments, the use of this slow-release fertilizer significantly increased crop yield and nutrient uptake.

Summary: The experiment investigated the effects of foliar spray of polyamines on rose plants, finding that putrescine had the highest impact on morphological characteristics, while 1 mM concentration of polyamines resulted in the greatest increase in shoot weight. Additionally, polyamine treatment reduced the content of anthocyanin, phenol and antioxidant capacity.
