This study aimed to investigate the association between dairy product consumption and metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in Portuguese adolescents, and whether the association differed by weight status. A cross-sectional study was conducted during the school year 2011/2012 with 412 Portuguese adolescents (52.4% girls) in 7th and 10th grade (aged 12 to 18 years old). The World Health Organization cutoffs were used to categorize adolescents as non-overweight (NW) or overweight (OW). Blood samples were collected to analyze C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), leptin, and adiponectin. Dairy product intake was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire. Participants were divided by tertiles according to the amount of dairy product consumed. The associations between dairy product consumption with metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated using generalized linear regression models with logarithmic link and gamma distribution and adjusted for potential confounders. The majority of adolescents were NW (67.2%). NW adolescents had lower IL-6, CRP, and leptin concentration than their counterparts (p < 0.05, for all comparisons). Higher levels of total dairy product and milk intake were inversely associated with IL-6 (P for trend <0.05, for all) in NW adolescents, but not in OW adolescents. NW adolescents in the second tertile of yogurt consumption had lower level of IL-6 compared to those in the first tertile (p = 0.004). Our results suggest an inverse association between total dairy product and milk intake and serum concentrations of IL-6 only among NW adolescents.

Bruno Rodrigues, Jorge Encantado, Eliana Carraca, Joao Martins, Adilson Marques, Luis Lopes, Eduarda Sousa-Sa, Dylan Cliff, Romeu Mendes, Rute Santos

Summary: This systematic review examined the measurement properties of self-and proxy-reported questionnaires measuring 24-hour movement behaviors in children and adolescents. The review included 29 studies and 37 questionnaires, and assessed the content, convergent and criterion validity, reliability, measurement error, and bias of each questionnaire. The findings revealed insufficient measurement properties and the lack of questionnaires considering the 24-hour movement behavior paradigm. Better questionnaires are needed to improve monitoring and surveillance systems in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to establish an equation to predict the results of the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and observe its agreement with measured values. The results showed a strong correlation between the 6MWT and the two-minute step test (2MST), and the regression equation derived from multiple linear regression showed good agreement with measured values when the 6MWT was below 600 meters. Therefore, the 2MST can serve as an alternative approach when time and space are limited.

Are parental physical activity and social support associated with adolescents' meeting physical activity recommendations?

Edina Maria de Camargo, Jose Francisco Lopez-Gil, Thiago Silva Piola, Jorge Mota, Wagner de Campos

Summary: This cross-sectional study in Brazil aimed to examine the association between parental physical activity and social support with adolescents meeting physical activity recommendations. The results showed that for boys, having parents who always attend and meet the physical activity recommendations were associated with meeting the recommendations. For girls, having parents who sometimes encourage them was associated with lower odds of meeting the recommendations. These findings can inform future interventions targeting physical activity behaviors in adolescents.

A network analysis involving mental difficulties, cognition, physical fitness, 24-hour movement components, fatness, and sociodemographic factors in children

Camila Felin Fochesatto, Carlos Cristi-Montero, Paulo Felipe Ribeiro Bandeira, Caroline Brand, Arieli F. Dias, Denise R. Bandeira, Jorge Mota, Adroaldo Cezar Araujo Gaya, Anelise Reis Gaya

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between mental difficulties, cognitive function, and factors such as physical fitness, exercise, obesity, and socio-demographic factors in children. The results showed that age and physical fitness moderate the relationship between cognitive function and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, while the 24-hour movement components influence the relationship between cognitive function and mental difficulties. Centrality measures from network analysis suggest that physical fitness, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and screen time are crucial nodes for future interventions.

Summary: Nowadays, cryoballoon (CB) has become an established alternative to radio frequency (RF) ablation for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), with the ability to isolate PVs in a single application. In a study on over 1000 consecutive patients, our center optimized the CB PVI procedure. It is expected that future guidelines will recommend CB as the first-line PVI for patients with paroxysmal AF and a class I indication. In a long-term follow-up of the EARLY-AF trial, CB showed a lower incidence of persistent atrial fibrillation compared to anti-arrhythmic drugs.
