Environmental degradation remains a huge obstacle to sustainable development. Research on the factors that promote or degrade the environment has been extensively conducted. However, one important variable that has conspicuously received very limited attention is energy innovations. To address this gap in the literature, this study investigated the effects of energy innovations on environmental quality in the U.S. for the period 1974 to 2016. We have incorporated GDP and immigration as additional regressors. Three indices comprising of CO2 emissions, ecological footprint and carbon footprint were used to proxy environmental degradation. The cointegration tests established long-run relationships between the variables. Using a maximum likelihood approach with a break, the results showed evidence that energy innovations significantly improve environmental quality while GDP degrades the quality of the environment, and immigration has no significant effect on the environment. Policy implications of the results are discussed in the body of the manuscript. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wind energy and sustainable electricity generation: evidence from Germany

Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Mufutau Opeyemi Bello

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of substituting wind energy for nuclear energy and other fossil fuels in Germany. Results show that wind and natural gas have positive output elasticity, while nuclear and coal have negative. All input pairs have positive substitution elasticity estimates, with wind energy showing highest substitutability with nuclear power, followed by natural gas and then coal.

Transportation fuel subsidies and CO2 emissions: The roles of economic complexity and uncertainty

Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Usama Al-Mulali

Summary: The increase in transportation fuel subsidies leads to a rise in CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. Moreover, an increase in population, real GDP per capita, or uncertainty exacerbates environmental degradation, while an increase in economic complexity reduces it. The impact of transport oil subsidies per capita is less pronounced in countries with higher per capita income.

Productivity and GDP: international evidence of persistence and trends over 130 years of data

Luis A. Gil-Alana, Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Mehmet Balcilar, Rangan Gupta

Summary: This study examines the degree of persistence of real gross domestic product per capita, total factor productivity, and labor productivity in a group of developed and developing nations, as well as the Euro Area. The findings suggest mean reversion in total factor productivity and real GDP per capita in Chile, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. However, mean reversion is only observed in labor productivity in Australia. Non-linearity is also present in the majority of the series.

Convergence in energy intensity of GDP: Evidence from West African countries

Mufutau Opeyemi Bello, Kean Siang Ch'ng

Summary: This study investigates the convergence of energy intensity of GDP among the 15-member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The results show that the energy intensity of GDP converges for the majority of West African countries. Therefore, regionally coordinated energy policies will improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable energy consumption.

Persistence of shocks on sectoral non-methane volatile organic compound from 1820 to 2019: Insights from a fourier quantile unit root test

Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Ugur Korkut Pata, Sinan Erdogan, Ilyas Okumus

Summary: This research investigates the persistence of potential shocks to non-methane volatile organic compounds in developed countries from 1820 to 2019, using traditional unit root approaches and a Fourier quantile unit root test. The results indicate that the non-methane volatile organic compounds follow a non-stationary process according to traditional unit root tests, but the Fourier quantile unit root test shows different results. The test indicates that non-methane volatile organic compounds are stationary in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, and Austria.

Persistence in Australian tourism employment industries

Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Gloria Claudio-Quiroga, Luis A. Gil-Alana

Summary: There have been numerous studies focusing on the impact of COVID-19 on employment in various industries, but the effect on employment in the tourism industry has been largely unexplored until now. This study examines the effects of the pandemic on employment in different sub-sectors of the Australian tourism industry using fractional integration. The results suggest that the pandemic has not significantly changed the persistence of employment series, except for the retail trade industry and cafes/restaurants.

Diversification in the tourism sector and economic growth in Australia: a disaggregated analysis

Sakiru Adebola Solarin, Taiwo Temitope Lasisi, Md. Emran Hossain, Festus Victor Bekun

Summary: Tourism policies in many countries, including Australia, seek to diversify both tourism markets and activities. This study examines the economic impact of such diversification in Australia from 1976 to 2020. The results suggest that diversifying tourism markets and activities contributes to positive economic growth in line with the tourism-led growth hypothesis. A 1% increase in diversification leads to a 0.010% increase in GDP from tourism markets and a 0.070% increase in GDP from tourism activities. These findings indicate that policies promoting diversification in tourism will benefit the Australian economy.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: Growing pressure from climate change and agricultural land use is destabilizing soil microbial community interactions. Little is known about microbial community resistance and adaptation to disturbances, hindering our understanding of recovery latency and implications for ecosystem functioning. Aluminium bioaccumulation in colon cancer, impinging on epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and cell death

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
