This study considered the effects of repeated bouts of short-term resistive exercise in old (age: 64.5 +/- 5.5 years; n = 10) and young men (age: 25.1 +/- 4.9 years; n = 10) who performed six knee extension exercise bouts over two weeks using various markers of exercise-induced muscle damage and electromyographic activity. We found that time-course changes in quadriceps isometric torque, creatine kinase activity, and muscle soreness in the two groups were similar. However, recovery in the acute torque deficit was mediated by more favourable electromyographic activity changes in the young group than in the older adults group. Muscle elastic energy storage and re-use assessed with dynamometry was selectively improved in the young group by the end of the protocol. Serum myoglobin concentration increased selectively in old group, and remained elevated with further bouts, suggesting higher sarcolemma vulnerability and less effective metabolic adaptation in the older adults, which, however, did not affect muscle contractility.

Well-Trained Elders Have Antioxidant Responses and an Equal Magnitude of EIMD as Young Adults

Eva Tekus, Nikolett Lilla Szenasi, Edina Szabo, Zoltan Heckel, Tibor Mintal, Tamas Koszegi, Tamas Atlasz, Zoltan Gazdag, Mark Vaczi, Marta Wilhelm

Summary: This study investigated the acute and chronic effects of a two-week eccentric concentric, dynamometric training on blood antioxidant parameters. The results showed that the training did not enhance the antioxidant defense or cause different time course of changes in muscle damage markers. Subjects may have already adapted to maintain constant levels of antioxidants and muscle torque due to their active lifestyle.

Amino Acid Profiling of Follicular Fluid in Assisted Reproduction Reveals Important Roles of Several Amino Acids in Patients with Insulin Resistance

Csilla Kurdi, Vanessza Lelovics, David Hesszenberger, Aniko Lajtai, Agnes Lakatos, Robert Herczeg, Krisztina Godony, Peter Mauchart, Akos Varnagy, Gabor L. Kovacs, Tamas Koszegi

Summary: The global prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) is increasing, with negative effects on metabolic parameters and fertility. This study quantitatively determined the amino acid profile of follicular fluid (FF) in insulin-resistant and non-insulin-resistant (NIR) groups and found significant differences in several amino acids between the two groups. The most significant alterations were related to the glutathione metabolic pathway. This suggests that insulin resistance can lead to changes in amino acid composition in FF, resulting in poor oocyte quality and reduced fertility.

Serum albumin binding studies on antiproliferative cyclic C5-curcuminoid derivatives using spectroscopic methods and molecular modelling

Levente Tyukodi, Balazs Zoltan Zsido, Csaba Hetenyi, Tamas Koszegi, Imre Huber, Zsuzsanna Rozmer

Summary: In this study, the binding nature of three selected synthetic cyclic C5-curcuminoid derivatives to human serum albumin (HSA) at different temperatures was investigated using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence methods, and 3D molecular modeling simulation. The experimental results revealed that the compounds formed complexes with HSA, leading to fluorescence quenching through a predominantly static quenching process with a quenching constant in the range of 104-105 M-1. The binding constants, binding sites, and thermodynamic parameters were calculated, suggesting that hydrophobic forces played a major role in the interaction between curcuminoids and HSA.

Apelin-13 as a Potential Biomarker in Critical Illness

Marin Gergics, Greta Pham-Dobor, Csilla Kurdi, Gergely Montsko, Krisztina Mihalyi, Gabor Banfai, Peter Kanizsai, Tamas Koszegi, Emese Mezosi, Laszlo Bajnok

Summary: In this prospective observational study, the researchers investigated the prognostic role of apelin-13 in critically ill patients and explored its correlations with free cortisol, aldosterone, CRH, and copeptin. The results showed a strong positive correlation between apelin-13 and CRH concentrations, and apelin-13 was significantly higher in non-septic patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that apelin-13 and free cortisol were independent determinants of survival.
