Chitosan, one of the most interesting and intriguing biopolymer, can be extracted from different marine waste. The present paper focuses on the chitosan extraction procedure from Macropipus holsatus crab waste. Because the deacetylation degree is the most important characteristic of chitosan, the influence of specific operating parameters during deacetylation treatment was analyzed by statistical analysis and mathematical modelling using artificial neural networks (ANN). The ANN simulation put into evidence the manner that the deacetylation degree is influenced by the considered operating conditions and enabled the identification of optimal operating conditions in order to obtain a chitosan with a relatively high deacetylation degree. The obtained chitosan was characterized by various methods, including physical-chemical analysis, structure identification and crystallinity index. The main effects as well as the interaction effects for some physical-chemical properties were studied to establish if and how the chitosan properties are affected by the extraction procedure.

Corona poling of PMMA based thin films doped by oxy and carboxy derivatives of [2,2]paracyclophane

Lada Puntus, Konstantin Lyssenko, Ilya V. Taidakov, Francois Kajzar, Ileana Rau

Summary: The effects of molecules of substituted [2,2]paracyclophane on the field corona poling experiment of thin film of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer were investigated. The mutual orientation of different substituents was found to impact the second order non-linear optical susceptibility. The phenyl substituted molecule exhibited the highest susceptibility value of 72.2 +/- 7.2 pm/V at a fundamental wavelength of 1064.2 nm. X-ray structure, absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations were employed to discuss the obtained values.

Crabs Marine Waste-A Valuable Source of Chitosan: Tuning Chitosan Properties by Chitin Extraction Optimization

Cristiana Luminita Gijiu, Raluca Isopescu, Daniel Dinculescu, Maria Memecica, Manuela-Rossemary Apetroaei, Mirela Anton, Verginica Schroder, Ileana Rau

Summary: This study experimentally investigated and optimized the extraction of chitin from crab shells to obtain chitosan with a predefined deacetylation degree and molecular mass. By varying four parameters, including NaOH concentration, temperature, HCl concentration, and number of acidic treatments, the optimum operating conditions were determined. The results showed that a high deacetylation degree of chitosan can be achieved with 5% NaOH concentration and low temperatures, while high molecular mass chitosan can be obtained with a single step acidic treatment.

Summary: Usnea lichens possess pharmacological effects that can be beneficial in oral medicine. This study explores the use of Usnea barbata extract in canola oil as an oral pharmaceutical formulation. Bioadhesive oral films loaded with the extract were formulated, characterized, and evaluated, demonstrating their potential pharmacological effects. The films showed antimicrobial properties against certain bacteria and fungi, and also exhibited cytotoxic effects on oral cancer cells. These findings suggest that Usnea barbata extract-loaded bioadhesive oral films could be a valuable phytotherapeutic formulation for oral infections and neoplasia.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to obtain and characterize collagen-based hydrogels with different concentrations of metronidazole and strontium ranelate for periodontal therapy. The structural integrity of the hydrogels was evaluated using circular dichroism, and the release of metronidazole was investigated using an immersion cell adapted to USP 2 apparatus. The results showed that the collagen hydrogels with metronidazole preserved the integrity of the collagen triple helix, while the presence of strontium ranelate caused a structural alteration. The designed collagen-based hydrogels with metronidazole could be beneficial for periodontal disease treatment.
