The main objective of this study is to analyze and compare greenhouse gas emission profiles, dynamics thereof, and the climate change mitigation efforts of the major players in the global climate change arena, namely the G7 and BRICS countries that are accounting for more than 60% of the world greenhouse gas emissions as in 2017. Given that the energy sector is the major source of the greenhouse emissions in these countries, the framework of sustainable energy development indicators was applied to the comparative analysis. The analysis revealed the differences among the groups of countries in terms of greenhouse gas emission profiles and development trends of these profiles. The convergence of greenhouse gas emission profiles can be noticed between G7 and BRICS countries during 1990-2017 period. Greenhouse gas emissions per capita has decreased in G7 countries and increased in BRICS countries. Energy intensity, economic growth and carbon factor are the main drivers of greenhouse gas emissions per capita growth in both groups of countries. Carbon factor represents carbon intensity of a country's energy sector and is measured by greenhouse gas emissions per unit of total primary energy supply. The impact of carbon factor was least significant among the main drivers in both groups. Energy intensity was the major driver of decrease in greenhouse gas emissions per capita for both groups, however, the economic growth exceeded the contribution of energy intensity in BRICS countries and greenhouse gas emissions have increased in this group during investigated period. The comparative analysis of greenhouse gas emission profiles development trends and the main drivers of these trends in both groups of countries provides important insights in shaping future climate change mitigation policies and developing greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Due to the high greenhouse gas profiles, low GHG reduction commitments and insufficient climate change mitigation the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme in India efforts in both groups there is danger of postponing implementation of Paris commitments and achieving the 1.5 degrees target. The policies implemented in high ranked countries, like or Integrated Resources Planning in South Africa or measures under Energy efficiency directive in EU can be applied in low ranked countries by providing the substantial contribution to the country's climate targets. How energy transition promotes pollution abatement in China's industrial sector

Haiyan Deng, Ziqiong Song, Tomas Balezentis, Zhiyang Shen

Summary: This paper models the production process using a novel by-production approach and ensures the linkage between economic and environmental sub-technologies. It adjusts the byproduction Data Envelopment Analysis model to obtain positive shadow prices and derives the shadow prices of carbon dioxide emissions for province-level industrial sector data in China from 1997 to 2019. The findings show that the shadow price of carbon has increased over time, indicating the effectiveness of policymakers' efforts in reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing. The significant variation in shadow prices across provinces can be explained by factors such as carbon productivity, non-fossil energy consumption, and urbanization rate.

Does digital transformation improve the firm?s performance? From the perspective of digitalization paradox and managerial myopia

Xiaochuan Guo, Mengmeng Li, Yanlin Wang, Abbas Mardani

Summary: Based on the resource-based view and upper echelons theory, this study examines the impact of digital transformation on total factor productivity and firm performance, as well as the moderating effect of managerial myopia, using data on Chinese A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2020. The findings indicate that digital transformation significantly increases total factor productivity but reduces firm performance due to increased operational cost rate, decreased total asset turnover, and increased management expenses. Managerial myopia amplifies the negative effects of digital transformation. Low or high levels of digital transformation are not beneficial for firm performance, while moderate levels of digital transformation can significantly improve firm performance. The negative impact of digital transformation on firm performance is greater for labor-intensive enterprises. This study contributes to the resource-based view and upper echelons theory, and expands research on the economic consequences of digital transformation in developing countries.

How to improve the resilience of power generation from energy intensity perspective? Evidence from the generalized Divisia index approach

Yaxian Wang, Tomas Balezentis

Summary: As the share of renewable energy increases in the energy-mix, tracking the dynamics and determinants of energy intensity (EI) is a crucial issue in energy economics related to power resilience. A novel generalized Divisia index (GDI) model combined with the Tapio index is proposed to decompose the intensity factors, with a case study of China's power sector from 2000 to 2020. The results show that although energy efficiency has improved during the period of 2000-2020, the complexity of reducing EI has increased from 2006-2010 to 2016-2020, and provincial EI exhibits a distribution trend of high in the north and low in the south, high in the east and low in the west. The decomposition results indicate that energy consumption is the main factor contributing to EI increase, while energy structure and technology are the major forces contributing to EI mitigation. Most provinces show a decoupling status between power output/energy consumption and EI, but the decoupling situation is unstable and the difficulty of decoupling has increased since 2016-2020.
