Summary: This study assesses the eco-efficiency performance of Malaysian rice self-sufficiency (RSS) and finds that it has deteriorated at the national level, although the developed areas show higher efficiency scores. The evaluation using the Malmquist-Luenberger (ML) index also indicates a general deterioration at the national and regional level. The future improvement of the RSS approach can be achieved through the empowerment of good agricultural practices, modernizing infrastructure, and efficient agrochemical usage.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of agricultural carbon emissions (ACE) and agricultural ecoefficiency (AEE) in China, as well as the driving factors of AEE growth. Using provincial data from 2001 to 2018, the study finds that ACE has shifted from increasing to continuously decreasing after 2015, mainly driven by major grain-producing areas. It also reveals that the AEE growth mechanism changed after 2010, primarily due to technological progress. The improvement of agricultural infrastructure and human capital positively contribute to AEE growth, while public investment in agricultural R&D and agricultural industrial structure undermine it. Therefore, green-oriented policies and targeted agricultural public investments are needed to achieve both ACE reduction and AEE growth.

Summary: The study found that 32 states in the US operate efficiently in terms of eco-efficiency, with 5 states performing at the most optimal scale, 17 states having considerable potential for boosting their productive efficiencies, and 28 states being overinvested in input variables. The non-radial DEA models show that the states' capital efficiency is very high, while energy and emission efficiencies are very low. The states' ecoproductivity is relatively higher than the eco-efficiency levels.

Summary: The relationship between innovation, human capital, economics, and the environment is crucial for sustainable development. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is an emerging market with the potential to achieve economic and environmental sustainability. Data envelopment analysis through the Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index is used to estimate the efficiency and productivity of innovation, human capital, economics, and economic sustainability in MENA countries. The results show an upward trend in efficiency, with a 26% increase in average efficiency between 2017 and 2019 compared to 2011 and 2016. However, there is variation in efficiency between countries. The decomposition of the productivity index indicates that the efficiency growth in 2017-2019 could be attributed to technical improvement rather than technological increase. However, there is a shift towards more technological progress. The study highlights the importance of developing human capital and capacity alongside innovation advancement for sustainable development, and presents strategies to achieve both simultaneously.

Summary: The study analyzes the eco-efficiency of China's industry from 2000 to 2015 in order to understand China's resource use and pollution trends in the context of rapid industrial growth. The results show an upward trend in industrial eco-efficiency (IEE) for China and its provinces, with strong regional disparity. Factors such as economic development, foreign direct investment (FDI), environmental enforcement, and market for technology are found to be associated with IEE. Measures to adjust industry structure, enhance environmental enforcement, attract FDI, and increase R&D investment can further improve IEE in China.

Summary: This study uses the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method and the Malmquist index model to measure the efficiency and changes of China's agricultural circular economy in 31 provinces and cities from 2017 to 2020. The analysis reveals that the efficiency of China's agricultural circular economy continued to grow during this period. The study also finds that the rural revitalization policy significantly impacts the efficiency of the agricultural circular economy, and government financial support has a positive influence on its efficiency. Based on the findings, several constructive suggestions are proposed.

Summary: In the context of industrialized green reform, the well-being of people and sustainable development take precedence over mere economic growth. Decision-makers in the government need to prioritize adjusting people's livelihoods according to the green economy and ecological environment. This study developed a comprehensive livelihood well-being index and incorporated it into an eco-efficiency assessment system using data from 31 Chinese provinces. The results showed significant improvements in the western region, underutilized technology in China, and inter-regional variances as the main drivers of spatial differences in eco-efficiency.

Summary: After facing climate change and other environmental problems, many countries have prioritized research on environmental protection. However, there is still a lack of relevant research in the field of regional green production and trade systems. This study examined the regions' abilities of constructing a green production and trade system on the local, inter-provincial, and international levels by measuring the green production and trade system efficiency of 30 Chinese provinces during 2012-2017. Factors such as economic level, industrial structure, government's administrative capacity, technological investment, energy structure, urbanization level, and external dependence level were found to affect the construction of these systems at different levels.

Summary: The research focuses on the impact of land use change on the migration of non-point source (NPS) pollution in semi-urbanized areas. By proposing the land use impact coefficient (LUIC) and optimizing land use types, it is possible to reduce the export coefficient (EC) of NPS pollution. The closer to the mainstream of the river, the more effective the reduction of EC by optimizing land use in areas with high LUIC values.

Summary: The distribution and fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the Houxi River were studied in relation to hydrological conditions, land use characteristics, and spatial contiguity. It was found that land use types related to anthropogenic activities were positively correlated with the presence and concentration of CECs. Significant annual variations were observed in both the concentrations and detection frequencies of CECs, with higher concentrations and detection frequencies downstream compared to upstream. Spatial variations were mainly influenced by downstream sites, and strong spatial autocorrelation was observed among connected sites. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers in managing and prioritizing CEC contaminants in the Houxi watershed.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has negative impacts on land use and landscape patterns in watersheds, degrading ecosystem services and habitat quality. This study assesses the ecological risk in Houxi Basin, a typical southeastern coastal watershed in China, from 2011 to 2019. The results show that the risks of degrading habitat-provision services slightly increase, while the risks of degrading water-purification services increase rapidly. Reasonable planning of land use types and spatial layout can help reduce ecological risks. Other conclusions include the effectiveness of combined replacement of forest and grassland in inhibiting pollution diffusion and the importance of optimizing areas with high land-use impact coefficients in inhibiting pollution diffusion.
