Eco-efficiency of the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone: An evaluation based on a novel eco-efficiency model and empirical analysis of influencing factors

Obtaining the most economic benefits while using the least resources and causing the least environmental damage is an urgent and key problem in achieving sustainable development. The concept of eco-efficiency provides a comprehensive perspective for observing and solving this problem. This paper proposes an extended data envelopment analysis model, named the WIN-US-SBM, as a comprehensive eco-efficiency evaluation method that can accommodate undesirable outputs, all the identification problems of decision-making units (DMUs), possible slacks of variables, and the problems of an insufficient number of available DMUs and intertemporal comparability. China's Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone (WTS Economic Zone) is an important regional economic growth center. By applying WIN-US-SBM and ArcGIS software, we investigated data on the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of eco-efficiency in the WTS Economic Zone for the years 2009-2016. Later, the global Malmquist-Luenberger index was used to decompose the sources of growth in eco-efficiency. Finally, the main driving factors of eco-efficiency were explored through a Tobit regression analysis. The empirical results show that: (1) The overall eco-efficiency of the WTS Economic Zone had greatly improved, increasing by 11.46% annually, and the cumulative growth rate of eco-efficiency was 110.84% from 2009 to 2016. (2) The eastern area had the highest average eco-efficiency, followed by the western area and the middle area in that order. Also, the growth rate of the middle area ranked first (16.68%), whereas the eastern area had the slowest growth in eco-efficiency (7.22%). (3) On the whole, the growth of eco-efficiency was driven mainly by technological progress and was restricted by the decrease in management level, which implies that policy makers should focus on improving management and technical levels. (4) High levels of economic development, population density, market openness, and industrial structure had positive effects on the eco-efficiency of the WTS Economic Zone, whereas energy intensity and expenditure on science and technology had negative impacts. Measuring urban compactness based on functional characterization and human activity intensity by integrating multiple geospatial data sources

The response of the migration of non-point source pollution to land use change in a typical small watershed in a semi-urbanized area

Summary: The research focuses on the impact of land use change on the migration of non-point source (NPS) pollution in semi-urbanized areas. By proposing the land use impact coefficient (LUIC) and optimizing land use types, it is possible to reduce the export coefficient (EC) of NPS pollution. The closer to the mainstream of the river, the more effective the reduction of EC by optimizing land use in areas with high LUIC values.

Decoupling Analysis between Economic Growth and Air Pollution in Key Regions of Air Pollution Control in China

Summary: This study uses the Tapio decoupling theory to analyze the relationship between economic growth and air pollution in key regions of air pollution control in China from 2000 to 2019. The results show that government policies have played a significant role in improving the decoupling between air pollution and economic development, but improvements are needed in optimizing industrial, energy, and transportation structures, as well as strengthening control measures.

Spatial autocorrelation and temporal variation of contaminants of emerging concern in a typical urbanizing river

Summary: The distribution and fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the Houxi River were studied in relation to hydrological conditions, land use characteristics, and spatial contiguity. It was found that land use types related to anthropogenic activities were positively correlated with the presence and concentration of CECs. Significant annual variations were observed in both the concentrations and detection frequencies of CECs, with higher concentrations and detection frequencies downstream compared to upstream. Spatial variations were mainly influenced by downstream sites, and strong spatial autocorrelation was observed among connected sites. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers in managing and prioritizing CEC contaminants in the Houxi watershed.

Ecological risk assessment models for simulating impacts of land use and landscape pattern on ecosystem services

Summary: Rapid urbanization has negative impacts on land use and landscape patterns in watersheds, degrading ecosystem services and habitat quality. This study assesses the ecological risk in Houxi Basin, a typical southeastern coastal watershed in China, from 2011 to 2019. The results show that the risks of degrading habitat-provision services slightly increase, while the risks of degrading water-purification services increase rapidly. Reasonable planning of land use types and spatial layout can help reduce ecological risks. Other conclusions include the effectiveness of combined replacement of forest and grassland in inhibiting pollution diffusion and the importance of optimizing areas with high land-use impact coefficients in inhibiting pollution diffusion.

Direct and indirect effects of multisensory modalities on visitor' s thermal comfort in an urban park in a humid-hot climate

Summary: Thermal comfort is crucial for human health and well-being, particularly for urban residents. In humid-hot regions, improving the thermal experience of urban residents by changing objective conditions such as microclimate is challenging. This study created a set of experience indices to explore the influencing factors and mechanisms of visitor's thermal comfort in an urban park. The findings show that visual, auditory, and olfactory experiences, as well as psychological cognitions, have a significant impact on thermal comfort.

Quantifying Spatiotemporal Changes in Human Activities Induced by COVID-19 Pandemic Using Daily Nighttime Light Data

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in human activities and nighttime lights, and this study used daily NTL data to analyze the spatial variations and temporal dynamics of human activities during the pandemic. The results indicate that NTL changes are not directly correlated to confirmed cases, but rather reflect changes in human activities and epidemic prevention measures. Different cities showed different responses during the outbreak and recovery periods, highlighting the importance of monitoring human activities using NTL data during public health events.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

The impact of social interaction and information acquisition on the adoption of soil and water conservation technology by farmers: Evidence from the Loess Plateau, China
