Members of the genus Chondracanthus (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) inhabit the shores of both hemispheres and have been used for decades in some countries as raw material for carrageenan extraction and in some cases destined for human consumption. This has created potential business opportunities, which has drawn the attention of scientists and producers and increased the number of scientific and applied research studies in the last few years. The broad morphological variation of Chondracanthus species makes necessary the use of molecular tools for species delimitation, which has led to the re-grouping and geographic re-distribution of some entities. The present study is a review of the available literature on members of the genus Chondracanthus, with the exception of Chondracanthus teedei, regarding their identity, distribution, ecology, life history, population structure, chemical traits, handling, and culture.

Secondary attachment disc of edible seaweed Chondracanthus chamissoi (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales): Establishment of permanent thalli stock

Sebastian Oyarzo, Marcela Avila, Paula Alvear, Jean Pierre Remonsellez, Loretto Contreras-Porcia, Cristian Bulboa

Summary: In this study, the productivity of an outdoor cultivation system using secondary attachment discs (SADs) of Chondracanthus chamissoi was evaluated. It was found that utilizing fiberglass as the substrate was the most suitable choice, as it increased the survival rate of SADs and improved the growth of seaweeds within the tanks.

Synergistic, antagonistic, and additive effects of heavy metals (copper and cadmium) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under binary and tertiary combinations in key habitat-forming kelp species of Chile

Andres Meynard, Camila Espinoza-Gonzalez, Alejandra Nunez, Francisco Castaneda, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: This study investigated the effects of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on two key kelp species in the Valparaiso Region of Chile, and found that the mixtures of these toxicants may have a more severe impact on kelps compared to individual toxicants.

Assessment of the independent and combined effects of copper and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on gametogenesis and sporophyte development of the kelp Lessonia spicata (Phaeophyceae, Ochrophyta)

Camila Espinoza-Gonzalez, Andres Meynard, Alejandra Nunez, Francisco Castaneda, Carolina Oyarzo-Miranda, Nicolas Latorre-Padilla, Jorge Rivas, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of Cu and PAHs on early development stages of kelps in central Chile, finding that Cu was more sensitive to gametogenesis while PAHs were more sensitive to sporophyte formation. The combined effects of Cu and PAHs were found to be the most harmful and rapid on the microscopic stages of kelps, emphasizing the importance of understanding the seasonal variation of pollutants and their combination on highly intervened coasts.

The widely distributed, edible seaweeds in Peru, Chondracanthus chamissoi and Chondracanthus chamissoi f. glomeratus (Gigartinaceae, Rhodophyta), are morphologically diverse but not phylogenetically distinct

Natalia Arakaki, Sigfried Suarez-Alarcon, Diego Marquez-Corigliano, Patricia Gil-Kodaka, Florence Tellier

Summary: Research has shown that C. chamissoi and C. glomeratus form a taxonomic entity with high morphological variability, with clear differences in morphological characteristics but no genetic differentiation at the molecular level, which may be of interest for future aquaculture development.

Ingestion of contaminated kelps by the herbivore Tetrapygus niger: Negative effects on food intake, growth, fertility, and early development

Nicolas Latorre-Padilla, Andres Meynard, Fernanda X. Oyarzun, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: The study revealed that sea urchins fed with polluted kelps from highly impacted zones showed lower growth rates and gamete release compared to those fed with non-impacted kelps. Additionally, the polluted kelps caused developmental delays and an increase in malformed larvae, indicating that pollutants ingested by sea urchins can be transferred to their offspring, negatively impacting their early development and categorizing Macrocystis pyrifera as a pollutant carrier.

Negative Consequences on the Growth, Morphometry, and Community Structure of the Kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (Phaeophyceae, Ochrophyta) by a Short Pollution Pulse of Heavy Metals and PAHs

Roddy Jara-Yanez, Andres Meynard, Gladys Acosta, Nicolas Latorre-Padilla, Carolina Oyarzo-Miranda, Francisco Castaneda, Florentina Pina, Jorge Rivas, Cristian Bulboa, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: The study of pollution effects in the marine environment has become increasingly important in recent decades, with a focus on the impact of exposure to multiple pollutants. Research shows that Macrocystis pyrifera exposed to a mixture of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons experienced negative effects on growth and morphology. Additionally, the associated community structure, including M. pyrifera grazers, also suffered from low richness and diversity due to the pollution pulse.

Seaweed restocking along the Chilean coast: History, present, and inspiring recommendations for sustainability

Carolina Oyarzo-Miranda, Ricardo Otaiza, Alexis Bellorin, J. M. Alonso Vega, Fadia Tala, Nelson A. Lagos, Fernanda X. Oyarzun, Rodrigo A. Estevez, Nicolas Latorre-Padilla, Ana Maria Mora Tapia, Luis Figueroa-Fabrega, Roddy Jara-Yanez, Cristian Bulboa, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: Several seaweed species are widely commercialized globally due to their demand in food, feed, and the extraction of phycocolloids. Chile is the leading producer, but overexploitation has caused a decrease in natural stocks. Various strategies have been implemented to restore seaweed stocks, with varying success rates. However, technological improvements are needed to develop cost-effective restocking strategies that are scalable, transferable, and socio-ecologically sustainable.

Indoor and Outdoor Cultures of Gracilaria chilensis: Determination of Biomass Growth and Molecular Markers for Biomass Quality Evaluation

Sofia Caroca-Valencia, Jorge Rivas, Matias Araya, Alejandra Nunez, Florentina Pina, Fernanda Toro-Mellado, Loretto Contreras-Porcia

Summary: Taking climate change, marine contamination, and global population growth into consideration, seaweed aquaculture has become an important option for large-scale production of high-quality biomass. This research applied indoor and outdoor cultivation methodologies to generate high biomass of G. chilensis with positive quality, determined by concentrations of lipoperoxides, phenolic compounds, and total antioxidant capacity. The results showed that G. chilensis cultures fertilized with Basfoliar(R) Aktiv (BF) obtained high biomass, low lipoperoxides, and high phenolic compounds and TAC compared to other culture media.
