A Survey to Assess and Delineate Approaches to Medical Student Outreach to Promote Diversity at Academic Radiation Oncology Programs

Malcolm D. Mattes, Curtiland Deville

Summary: Most academic radiation oncology departments do not offer educational outreach targeting women or minority students or promote programs specifically designed for them, indicating the need for further efforts to attract a more diverse workforce.

Radiating the prostate bed in relapsed oligometastatic prostate cancer: How comprehensive should we be?

Yilin Cao, Daniel Y. Song, Curtiland Deville, Theodore L. DeWeese, Stephen Greco, Phuoc T. Tran, Matthew P. Deek

Summary: This study investigated the rate of prostate bed recurrence in oligometastatic prostate cancer patients after metastasis-directed therapy. The results showed that patients who did not receive prostate bed irradiation had a higher rate of local failure. Prospective studies are needed to determine when prostate bed irradiation should be considered for patients with oligometastatic prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy.

A Medicare Claims Analysis of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Access to Radiation Therapy Services

Constantine A. Mantz, Nikhil G. Thaker, Curtiland Deville, Anne Hubbard, Praveen Pendyala, Najeeb Mohideen, Vivek Kavadi, Karen M. Winkfield

Summary: This study examines healthcare disparities in radiation therapy among different racial and ethnic groups in the USA. The results show that Black, Hispanic, and Native American patients have higher rates of failure to initiate treatment, and among those who do initiate treatment, Black and Hispanic patients require a longer time for treatment completion. These findings provide opportunities to address healthcare inequalities.

Genomic Testing in Localized Prostate Cancer Can Identify Subsets of African Americans With Aggressive Disease

Burri, Andrew Leone, Cesar E. Ercole, Joshua D. Palmer, Neha Vapiwala, Curtiland Deville, Timothy R. Rebbeck, Adam P. Dicker, William Kelly, Kosj Yamoah

Summary: This study finds that African American men with prostate cancer have a higher risk of genetic risk reclassification compared to non-African American men. Integrating genomic classifiers with clinical risk classification can help identify African American men with localized prostate cancer who have a high genomic risk of early metastatic disease.

The impact of salvage radiotherapy initiation at PSA ≤ 0.5 ng/ml on metastasis-free survival in patients with relapsed prostate cancer following prostatectomy

Emerson E. Lee, Tanmay Singh, Chen Hu, Misop Han, Curtiland Deville, Aditya Halthore, Stephen Greco, Phuoc Tran, Theodore DeWeese, Daniel Y. Song

Summary: This study found that initiating salvage radiation therapy (SRT) when PSA levels are below 0.5 ng/ml is associated with improved metastasis-free survival (MFS) in patients with biochemical recurrence. Seminal vesicle invasion is also associated with shorter time to biochemical failure and eventual metastasis.

Shorter Radiation Regimens and Treatment Noncompletion Among Patients With Breast and Prostate Cancer in the United States: An Analysis of Racial Disparities in Access and Quality

Summary: Shorter radiation regimens may reduce treatment noncompletion rates, but black patients are consistently less likely to receive them for breast cancer and prostate cancer. However, evidence suggests that these shorter regimens could lead to similar oncologic outcomes.

In silico comparison of whole pelvis intensity-modulated photon versus proton therapy for the postoperative management of prostate cancer

Emile Gogineni, Ian K. Cruickshank, Hao Chen, Aditya Halthore, Heng Li, Curtiland Deville

Summary: This study compared intensity-modulated photon (IMRT) and proton (IMPT) radiation therapy for treating prostate cancer in the postoperative setting. It was found that IMPT significantly reduced dose to organs at risk (OARs) while achieving comparable target coverage to IMRT.

Long-term Clinical Outcomes in Favorable Risk Prostate Cancer Patients Receiving Proton Beam Therapy

Alicia Bao, Andrew R. Barsky, Russell Maxwell, Justin E. Bekelman, Stefan Both, John P. Christodouleas, Curtiland Deville, Penny Fang, Zelig A. Tochner, Neha Vapiwala

Summary: This study retrospectively assessed the long-term disease control outcomes of 166 favorable risk PC patients who received PBT, with the majority having low-risk disease. The 5- and 8-year BFFS rates were 97% and 92%, respectively, showing similar or improved results compared to previous studies with other treatment modalities for localized intact PC.
