Increasing the productivity while maintaining the quality of manufactured products is essential in the present industrial context. In this sense, the use of robotic devices in manufacturing facilities is increasing due to the advantages related to flexibility, repeatability, and low-cost, when compared to machining centers. However, a lack of digital connectivity between machines within the manufacturing system is a fact. Thus, in this paper, a low-cost instrumentation, sensing, and cloud technologies are proposed to monitor robotized manufacturing processes by digitalization of traditional robot arms. As a case study, a drilling process of different aircraft materials is performed to prove the digital integration. So, the results showed an interesting potential of the proposed methodology, especially in the case of material removal processes performed by robotized cells that are still challenging for conventional robots due to the lack of rigidity of their components.

Drilling of carbon fiber parts performed by an Industry 4.0 systems-integrated technology

Gustavo Franco Barbosa, Guilherme Zambom Grassi, Wilian de Andrade Bezerra, Sidney Bruce Shiki

Summary: This paper introduces an advanced robotized cell that utilizes a robot manipulator and embedded sensor with communication capacity to perform machining of mechanical parts using Industry 4.0 principles. The objective is to propose an intelligent manufacturing technology that enhances productivity, management, and digitalization based on Internet of Things concepts. This approach adds value to production processes by providing monitoring tools for operators and plant managers, allowing data acquisition and analysis for failure prediction and process adjustments to minimize waste and maximize business value. A case study of drilling a carbon fiber part is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed cell and the potential impact of Industry 4.0 on the aircraft industry.

Force and vision-based system for robotic sealing monitoring

Franco Rocha Pereira, Caio Dimitrov Rodrigues, Hugo da Silva e Souza, Jose Oliveira Cruz Neto, Matheus Chiaramonte Rocha, Gustavo Franco Barbosa, Sidney Bruce Shiki, Roberto Santos Inoue

Summary: Sealing process is crucial to ensure quality and prevent leakages, corrosion and electrical discharges. Manual application method is commonly used in industrial manufacturing but an automated system could enhance effectiveness by managing sealant extrusion and reducing human factors. This article proposes an automated end-effector that measures contact force and monitors width and texture of the sealant through computer vision. A case study using the force sensing end-effector coupled to an industrial robot manipulator demonstrates the potential of online monitoring for quality assurance in sealing applications.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel QFD-based analytical guideline for choosing painting applicator nozzles in any business. The lack of specific guidance methods in this area often causes difficulties for industries during the selection process. The guideline combines QFD and analysis of key painting parameters to determine technical features and align with the company's strategy. Two case studies demonstrate the application of this approach to improve productivity, quality, and cost reduction.
