Summary: The study revealed that patients with anhedonia in major depressive disorder exhibit different inflammatory characteristics compared to patients without anhedonia. Elevated plasma CFH levels may serve as a potential biomarker for anhedonia in subtyping MDD.

Summary: Identifying reliable biomarkers for depression has been challenging due to the heterogeneity of symptoms and high rates of comorbidity. This study used principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to identify six distinct clusters of depression symptoms in a sample of young adults. The study also found that the cluster characterized by neurovegetative depression had significantly elevated levels of inflammation. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the biological underpinnings of symptom dimensions and subtypes in complex mental health disorders like depression.

Summary: This study provides insight into the impact of different childhood trauma subtypes on depression symptoms. Threat and deprivation were found to differently relate to depressed mood and anhedonia. Threat and deprivation predicted more severe depressed mood, while only deprivation predicted elevated anhedonia. The effects of childhood trauma persisted into early adulthood and varied across gender.

Summary: Inflammation has complex associations with depressive symptoms, with age potentially playing a significant role. Aging is associated with various changes in brain structure and function, yet the role of inflammation in depressive symptoms within a lifespan developmental framework has not received much attention.

Summary: This study used lesion-symptom mapping to identify infarct locations and white matter disconnections associated with poststroke depressive symptoms (PSDS). The results showed that infarcts in the right amygdala, right hippocampus, and right pallidum were consistently associated with PSDS. Disconnectome-based analyses revealed disconnections in the right parahippocampal white matter, right thalamus and pallidum, and right anterior thalamic radiation were significantly associated with PSDS.

Summary: This study evaluated the treatment outcomes of agomelatine on anhedonic state, anxiety/somatic symptoms, and sexual function in Chinese patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that after 9 weeks of treatment, the response rate and remission rate of the agomelatine treatment group were 73.5% and 39.7% respectively, with significant improvement in somatic symptoms and anhedonia. The patients exhibited lower levels of disease severity and higher levels of quality of life during the follow-up period. No serious adverse events occurred during the treatment.

Summary: Major depressive disorder is a debilitating neuropsychiatric syndrome with genetic, epigenetic, and environmental contributions, affecting more than one in six individuals in the United States. Dysregulation of brain dopamine systems is a key aspect of the pathophysiology of MDD, leading to a vast treatment gap worldwide. Neurodevelopmental factors may modify risk for later emergence of MDD through dopaminergic substrates in the brain.

Summary: This study assessed postpartum mood and mother-child attachment in a cohort of 598 young mothers and found multiple distinct patterns. Most women with postpartum depression showed deteriorating behavior, while adjustment disorder cases showed improving behavior. Higher EPDS levels were associated with higher risk factors, while lower EPDS levels were associated with better mother-child attachment.

Summary: Exposure to daily stressors specific to the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with emotional distress, heightened stress reactivity, and increased depressive symptomology. Current depressive symptomology may moderate the association between COVID-19-related daily stressor exposure and negative affective reactivity, particularly in young adults.

Summary: This study examined the effects of modernized collaborative care on patients with depression. The results showed that the intervention improved both cognitive/affective and somatic symptoms of depression over 12 months. However, the intervention did not significantly influence the levels of BDNF, and the changes in BDNF did not mediate the intervention effects on depressive symptoms.

Summary: The study examined latent factors of depression symptoms in patients with obesity and elevated depressive symptoms using the depression Symptom Checklist (SCL-20) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results showed that the SCL-20 was more sensitive than the PHQ-9 in differentiating symptom profiles in this population, possibly due to differences in scale items and aspects of depression they measure.

Summary: This study aimed to examine gender disparities in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder within a privately insured population in the United States. The results showed that males had a lower diagnosis rate compared to females, with gender differences remaining significant even after adjusting for demographics, comorbidity, and healthcare utilizations. Gender disparity was consistently strong among most age groups, but varied in other demographic subgroups.

Summary: The study investigated the preliminary efficacy of a high n-3 plus low n-6 (H3-L6) dietary intervention in improving mood stability in Bipolar Disorder (BD) patients. Results showed that the H3-L6 group had reduced variability in mood, energy, irritability, and pain compared to the control group, but no significant differences were found in mean ratings of mood symptoms between the two groups. The dietary intervention showed potential in improving mood symptom variability in BD participants.

Summary: This study provides the first evidence of augmented T-cell mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (T-cell mitoROS) in young, otherwise healthy adults with MDD. Although the elevated T-cell mitoROS did not correspond to a proinflammatory profile, these findings suggest that elevated T-cell mitoROS may be an early marker of immune system dysregulation in young adults with MDD.

Summary: Activation of NF-kappa B, through increased vascular ROS production, contributes to reduced NO-dependent endothelial dilation in young adults with MDD. Short-term treatment with NF-kappa B inhibitor salsalate improves NO-mediated endothelium-dependent dilation in MDD patients, while acute localized ROS scavenging with apocynin enhances NO-dependent dilation before salsalate administration.

Summary: This study suggests an exaggerated negativity bias in bipolar disorder (BD) and little is known about whether people with BD experience the 'positivity effect' with increasing age. By conducting a cross-sectional study, it was found that the accuracy of positive stimulus identification in the healthy control group increased with age, but this pattern was not observed in participants with BD. This finding is important in gaining a clearer picture of the effects of BD on the brain in later life.

Summary: This study examines the trajectories of depressive symptoms after spousal loss and finds associations between different trajectories and childhood maltreatment, attachment style, and risk of prolonged grief. Individuals with higher childhood maltreatment and attachment anxiety are more likely to belong to the chronic depression group, and those with persistent depressive symptoms up until 6 months are more likely to exhibit prolonged grief at 12 months post-loss.

Summary: The use of structured interviews helped physicians identify major depressive disorder by the second visit in patients with complex psychopathology. Patients with high complexity/severity of symptoms and more difficulty with functioning were less commonly identified with bipolar disorder even with the assistance of a structured interview.Structured assessment tools may improve the detection of psychiatric illness by clinicians at the first visit.

Summary: This study comprehensively reviewed the evidence on the impact of testosterone on human mating and parenting behaviors. The findings suggest that basal testosterone levels are related to mating and parenting behaviors in both men and women. Testosterone responds to reproduction-relevant cues and acute changes in testosterone levels are associated with subsequent mating and parenting behaviors. Single-dose exogenous testosterone administration may causally affect mating and parenting behaviors. However, the support for trade-off interpretations of testosterone's adaptive function is mixed, indicating that the role of testosterone in modulating human mating and parenting is complex and context-dependent.
