The role of citizen science in management of invasive avian species: What people think, know, and do

Tina B. Phillips, Robyn L. Bailey, Vicki Martin, Holly Faulkner-Grant, David N. Bonter

Summary: The study indicates that individuals participating in citizen science projects are more likely to have negative views of non-native bird species, score higher on bird identification tasks, and engage more in managing invasive species. Respondents' perceptions of whether non-native birds are a problem at the continental scale were the most important predictor for undertaking management activities, emphasizing the significant role of individual factors such as perception.

Conducting conservation social science surveys online

Chloe B. Wardropper, Ashley A. Dayer, Madeline S. Goebel, Victoria Y. Martin

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally impacted environmental and conservation research, leading many scientists to switch to conducting surveys online. Online surveys offer new opportunities for participant recruitment, design, and testing. To ensure high-quality online surveys, consideration must be given to potential sampling and nonresponse errors, designing survey tools for multiple devices, testing the instrument, and using multiple protocols to identify data quality problems.

Participant retention in a continental-scale citizen science project increases with the diversity of species detected

David N. Bonter, Victoria Y. Martin, Emma Greig, Tina B. Phillips

Summary: This article explores the retention of participants in a large-scale citizen science project. The study found that the probability of retention was positively correlated with the diversity of species reported by a participant, but unrelated to the overall abundance of birds reported. Participants who successfully submitted observations were more likely to remain in the project than those who only registered. Measures of effort were also positively correlated with retention. This research provides a case study for understanding volunteer retention in environmental monitoring projects through demographic information and scientific data collected by participants.
