A 7-week study was conducted to investigate the effect of different fasting and re-feeding regimes on compensatory growth and some physiological parameters of juvenile Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii). Fish (46.5 +/- 0.5 g) were fed on a diet (containing 450 g/kg crude protein and 20 MJ/kg digestible energy) according to four feeding regimes in triplicate including: control group (C, fed everyday), W1 (2 weeks of feeding followed by 1 week of fasting and 4 weeks of re-feeding), W2 (1 week of feeding followed by 2 weeks of fasting and 4 weeks of re-feeding) and W3 (3 weeks of fasting followed by 4 weeks of re-feeding). The fasted groups including W1 (119.6 +/- 2.1 g), W2 (118.0 +/- 1.7 g) and W3 (108.5 +/- 4.8) significantly lost their weights during fasting phase and did not attain the final weight of the C (137.3 +/- 1.7 g) after re-feeding phase. The re-feeding phase increased the specific growth rate in the fasted groups compared to the C (p < .05). After the fasting phase, concentrations of T-3, T-4, glucose, total protein and triglyceride in plasma of fasted groups were decreased, but levels of total cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase increased compared to the C. After re-feeding phase, except for glucose level, all mentioned metabolites were restored in the plasma of W1 group, but total protein level and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations in plasma were not restored in W2 and W3 groups. Overall, our finding demonstrated 4 weeks of re-feeding was too short to induce full compensatory growth in A. baerii juveniles.

Vahid Morshedi, Mansour Torfi Mozanzadeh, Shirin Hamedi, Iman Naserifard, Hadi Ebrahimi, Naser Agh, Mahmoud Nafisi, Maryam Azodi, Ghasem Rashidian

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different DHA levels on the diet of yellowtail sea bream larvae for 30 days. The results showed that different DHA levels did not significantly affect the survival rate and growth performance of the larvae. The activity of digestive enzymes fluctuated among the experimental groups, but did not change significantly in most intervals. The DHA content and DHA/EPA ratio in the larvae were correlated with the DHA level.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) are metabolic-related diseases that can occur during pregnancy. This study investigated the changes in the placental chorionic villi (CVs) of GDM and SGA patients. The results showed higher levels of SOD-1 and CAT in GDM placentae, which may be related to the hyperglycemic environment. Lipid composition and structure of the placenta were altered in both pathologies, with SGA inducing lipid peroxidation and reducing collagen deposition in the CVs. The cannabinoid system does not seem to be involved in these two pathologies.

Summary: In this study, the potential of two probiotics, Bacillus subtilis and Lactococcus lactis, alone or in combination with vitamin D, to regulate the transcription of genes involved in the ossification process in human osteoblast cell line was explored. The results showed that the extract of B. subtilis significantly increased the transcription and translation of alkaline phosphatase (ALPL), indicating its substantial osteogenic impact on osteoblasts. Furthermore, B. subtilis extract could enhance extracellular matrix mineralization, outperforming the effects of L. lactis and vitamin D. These findings also supported the use of probiotic extracts rather than live cells in investigating the effects of probiotics in vitro.

Summary: The demand for organic UV filters as active components in sunscreen products has increased rapidly due to growing awareness of the hazards of UV radiation. However, their extensive use has raised concerns about their effects on aquatic organisms. This study used zebrafish to investigate the effects of exposure to a derivative of the popular UV filter octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), called tempol-methoxycinnamate (TMC). The results showed that while OMC exposure increased stress and oxidative response genes, TMC had reduced toxicity and exhibited antioxidant activity. Furthermore, TMC and OMC showed different interactions with hormone receptors, suggesting TMC as a more environmentally friendly alternative UV filter.
