Different inclusion levels of mealworm meal Tenebrio molitor (TM) were investigated in diets for tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in biofloc systems. Five treatments were evaluated (0% or control, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of TM inclusion), with three replicates per treatment and 10 fish (2.08 +/- 0.19 g) stocked per experimental unit. After six weeks, data was submitted to a regression analysis up to the second order. Zootechnical, somatic, hematological and biochemical parameters, as well as water quality, proximate composition of carcass and biofloc, abundance of the planktonic community and fatty acid profile of TM were analyzed and monitored. Throughout the experiment water quality parameters were kept within the required levels suited to this species. After six weeks, the final weight, weight gain, SGR, FCR, erythrocytes, hepatosomatic index and carcass composition (dry matter and ether extract) resulted in a linear effect when inclusion levels increased. Polynomial models and Plateau Linear Responses (LRP) were applied to survival and productivity (kg m(-3)) indicating maximum values of 11.68% and 10.68% of TM inclusion, respectively. Diverse groups of microorganisms were identified with a prevalence of protozoans, microalgae, diatoms and rotifers. Fatty acid (FA) profile of TM indicated high levels of saturated FA and moderate levels of linoleic and eicosapentaenoic FA. The overall results indicated that it is possible to include TM up to 10% in diets for tilapia juveniles raised in biofloc systems.

Laboratory-controlled challenges of streptococcosis in Nile tilapia using the oral route (infected-feed) for infection

Marco Shizuo Owatari, Lucas Cardoso, Scheila Anelise Pereira, Ulisses de Padua Pereira, Leonardo Tachibana, Mauricio Laterca Martins, Jose Luiz Pedreira Mourino

Summary: This study evaluated three different routes of Streptococcus agalactiae infection in Nile tilapia and found that intraperitoneal and intragastric routes were more aggressive, causing greater brain damage and early mortality, while oral inoculum presented less intensity in brain lesions and a chronic immune response, with longer mortality time. Oral infected-feed administration may be an innovative method for future aquaculture research experiments.

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae and in its fish host tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) from fish farms

Gabriela Tomas Jeronimo, Edson Luniere Porto, Marcos Alexandre Bolson, Ezio Sargentini-Junior, Mauricio Laterca Martins, Matheus Gomes da Cruz

Summary: Fish parasites, such as Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae, can accumulate high concentrations of trace metals and serve as bioindicators of environmental contamination. The presence of metals in the parasite was significantly higher than in the host fish Colossoma macropomum, indicating their ability to accumulate metals. The results suggest that the parasite directly influences the concentrations of trace metals in the fish tissues.

Influence of Seasonality and Culture Stage of Farmed Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with Monogenean Parasitic Infection

Elisabeth de Aguiar Bertaglia, William Eduardo Furtado, Angela Teresa Silva e Souza, Manoela Clemente Fernandes, Scheila Anelise Pereira, Elenice Martins Brasil, Jose Luiz Pedreira Mourino, Gabriela Tomas Jeronimo, Mauricio Laterca Martins

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of abiotic and biotic factors in a tropical region on the rate of monogenean parasitism in Nile tilapia that are farmed in net cages. A total of 240 sexually reversed fish were analyzed, with 20 fish collected from each culture stage during each sampling month. The results showed that higher parasitic infection values were observed in colder seasons with lower precipitation, and autumn had the highest parasitic infection values compared to other seasons. The occurrence of monogenean parasites showed a negative correlation with season but a positive correlation with culture stage.

Yasir Hasib, Liang Zhong, Ho Yat Kam, Chun Ting Lam, Hong Liu, Ying Yang, Wenlong Cai, Dominic Brettell, Sophie St -Hilaire

Summary: The microbial composition and diversity in aquaculture pond ecosystems are closely related to animal productivity and disease outbreaks. Ozone nanobubbles have been shown to reduce pathogens and improve fish innate immunity, but little is known about their effect on the microbial community of aquaculture ponds. This study investigated the impact of ozone macrobubbles and nanobubbles on pond water microbial ecology and fish health. Ozone treatments significantly reduced bacterial abundance and altered the bacterial community composition, but bacterial richness was still observed 24 hours after treatment. The advantage of nanobubble delivery of ozone was its efficiency and ability to increase dissolved oxygen in water. No adverse effects were observed on fish health at the exposure dose used. This study provides preliminary information on the potential applications of nanobubble technology for resetting microbial communities during disease outbreaks.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effects of adding vegetable biocholine (VB) to pigs' diets to minimize the negative effects caused by daily aflatoxin intake. Consuming aflatoxin-contaminated feed reduced feed consumption and weight gain in piglets and caused oxidative stress in their intestines and livers. However, VB supplementation did not improve performance but showed hepatoprotective potential when facing aflatoxin challenge.

Diet-egg relationships and equilibration of fatty acids in eggs of southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma

Hunter S. Bailey, Ashley N. Fincannon, Lee A. Fuiman

Summary: This study investigated the transfer of fatty acids from broodstock diets to eggs and the time needed for the eggs to equilibrate to the diet in Southern flounder. The findings indicate that different diet treatments significantly affect the fatty acid composition of eggs, and it takes 8-16 weeks for the eggs to adapt to changes in the adult diet. These results are important for improving broodstock diets and feeding protocols in stock-enhancement programs.
